Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues of 24 patients with primary nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, of whom seven had recurrences, were studied immunohistochemically for the expression of CD34 antigen using two different antibodies (HPCA-1 and QBEND 10). In all cases, there was an exclusive staining of endothelial cells, while pericytes, smooth muscle cells and stromal fibroblasts were not reactive. The staining intensity, however, was more pronounced in small tumor vessels of capillary- and sinusoidal-type than in larger vessels, which were usually characterized by an irregular smooth muscle coat.

The use of endoscopy in the paranasal sinuses has grown and diversified in the past few years. We present a case of an immature malignant teratoma originating from the sinuses, with intracranial extension to the middle and posterior fossae, that was managed and removed endoscopically. At the age of 2 months, the patient was hospitalized for respiratory instability.

We report the first case of an extranodal follicular dendritic cell (FDC) tumour localized in the nasopharynx of a 44-year-old male patient. The tumour cells were characterized immunohistochemically by strong expression of CD21, HLA-DR and vimentin and focal expression of CD68 and cytokeratin. Electron microscopic examination revealed desmosomal cell junctions between adjacent cell processes.

We report the case of a 36-year-old male patient who sustained a hyperextension trauma of the left knee. After performing diagnostic arthroscopy (partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament) and partial resection of the anterior cruciate ligament, the patient experienced a complete paralysis of the peroneal nerve. One year after the first surgical procedure, a reconstructive repair of the peroneal nerve and a transfer of the anterior tibial muscle was performed.

Theories regarding the origin of lateral neck cysts (LNC) range from congenital branchial pouch abnormalities to acquired salivary gland inclusions within lymph nodes. We analyzed 97 LNC histologically and evaluated their cytokeratin (CK) profile in a search for their derivation. 77/97 LNC were located in soft tissues, 20/97 within lymph nodes.

Chronic Lyme borreliosis (CLB) can present not only in different organs but also in different patterns. Although many theories exist about the mechanisms leading to CLB, it is known that viable Borrelia burgdorferi can persist for decades and cause late skin manifestations of acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA). Thus, the immunopathogenetic findings in ACA can serve as a model for studying the chronic course of Lyme borreliosis.

During the last 20 years, mutual communications between the immune, the endocrine and the nervous systems have been defined on the basis of physiological, cellular, and molecular data. Nevertheless, a major problem in the new discipline "Psychoneuroimmunology" is that controversial data and differences in the interpretation of the results make it difficult to obtain a comprehensive overview of the implications of immunoneuroendocrine interactions in the maintenance of physiological homeostasis, as well as in the initiation and the course of pathological conditions within these systems. In this article, we will first discuss the afferent pathways by which immune cells may affect CNS functions and, conversely, how neural tissues can influence the peripheral immune response.

In rats with chronic portal hypertension (PH) and common bile duct ligation (CBDL), significant ileal bacterial overgrowth, translocation of indigenous intestinal bacteria, a decrease in hepatic and ileal reduced glutathione (GSH) and an increase in ileal mucosal lipid peroxidation occur. alpha-Tocopherol (vitamin E) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) treatment attenuated the incidence of bacterial translocation, improved hepatic and ileal GSH levels and decreased ileal mucosal lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that in chronic PH and CBDL oxidative processes in the liver and intestine play an important role for bacterial translocation.

Twenty-eight cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma were studied immunohistochemically for cytoskeletal phenotyping of stromal cells. Electron microscopy was also used to study the ultrastructure of five of the tumors. All typical stromal cells showed intensive immunostaining for vimentin, but were negative for smooth muscle actin and desmin.

During a 16-year period, 60 neonates with gastroschisis were treated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery in Graz; 6 died and 54 (90%) survived. A questionnaire was sent to 45 patients, who were called for a medical examination; 31 patients (69%) came to follow-up, 26 of whom reported minor abdominal problems that could be related to gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Fifteen agreed to 24-h esophageal pH monitoring and/or upper gastrointestinal series; in 7 pathological GER could be demonstrated.

The postoperative course in neonates with gastroschisis after successful surgical repair is complicated by prolonged ileus. Elective cesarean section (CS) has been advocated to limit damage to the bowel due to labor and compression in the narrow birth canal and to prevent retrograde infection. We reviewed the records of 58 infants with gastroschisis treated between 1977 and 1993; 12 were delivered by CS for obstetrical reasons and 46 were delivered vaginally (V).

This article reviews recent data from our laboratory towards the impact of the autonomous nervous system on mutual interactions between the immune system and the central nervous system. Using a pharmacological approach in rats it is shown that shifts in the adrenergic/cholinergic balance in vivo affect in vitro functions of the non-specific and specific immune system, whereby adrenergic and cholinergic stimulation in general have opposite effects. A high degree of integration appears to exist between cells of the immune system with the cholinergic system.

Proliferation centres, also known as pseudofollicles, are present in approximately 90% of lymphocytic lymphomas (B-CLL). They consist of loosely arranged larger cells that often contain prominent nucleoli. In contrast to true B-cell follicles, which may be found entrapped within the small lymphocytic infiltrate in sections of B-CLL, proliferation centres are said not to contain follicular dendritic cells, although their presence has been occasionally recorded.

A new surgical technique for the treatment of total colonic aganglionosis is described. Preservation of the right colon and the ileocecal valve is possible by performing an end-to-back anastomosis between a prececal short ileum segment and the uneffected ileum, and by creating a side-to-side anastomosis between an isolated ileal loop and the right colon. The ileorectal anastomosis is performed with a curved EEA 21 circular stapler (USSC, Norwalk, CT).

Choledochocele is a rare abnormality of unknown etiology that consists of cystic or diverticular dilatations of the intramural part of the common bile duct. The authors present a case of choledochocele with a common channel in a 15-year-old boy who had a 5-year history of intermittent right upper abdominal pain. In a review of the literature, macroscopic variations were noted as well as different types of epithelial lining inside the choledochocele.
