: The loss of teeth in the posterior maxillary region often leads to significant alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, complicating dental implant placement. Maxillary sinus grafting, typically using autogenous bone, is a common solution. However, autogenous bone grafts require additional surgical procedures, leading to increased morbidity.

Background: Current guidelines recommend at least 12 months of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, DAPT prolonged use may increase the risk of bleeding complications. Therefore, we aimed to perform a meta-analysis to assess whether ticagrelor monotherapy after ≤1 month of DAPT improves clinical outcomes compared with continued DATP in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients post-PCI.

Article Synopsis
  • This study developed a method to test disinfection techniques for lateral canals in extracted teeth using an ex vivo model.
  • The researchers created lateral canals in mandibular premolars and contaminated them with a bacterial culture to evaluate the effectiveness of different disinfection procedures.
  • Results showed that all tested methods significantly reduced bacterial presence in the canals, with no significant differences in effectiveness among the various disinfection techniques used.

Electronic address:

This study investigated whether chronic undernutrition alters the mitochondrial structure and function in renal proximal tubule cells, thus impairing fluid transport and homeostasis. We previously showed that chronic undernutrition downregulates the renal proximal tubules (Na+K)ATPase, the main molecular machine responsible for fluid transport and ATP consumption. Male rats received a multifactorial deficient diet, the so-called Regional Basic Diet (RBD), mimicking those used in impoverished regions worldwide, from weaning to a juvenile age (3 months).

Objectives: The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the incidence and intensity of postoperative pain in oncological patients with infected teeth subjected to nonsurgical root canal treatment or retreatment.

Methods: Teeth with apical periodontitis from healthy control patients and oncological patients (n = 70 per group) were root canal treated/retreated and evaluated for the development of postoperative pain. Patients from the two groups were matched for tooth type, gender, clinical manifestation of apical periodontitis, and intervention type.

Root canal obliteration is caused by hard tissue apposition and is often associated with teeth with a history of trauma, orthodontic movement, caries reaction, restorative procedures near the pulp chamber, and teeth of elderly patients. Preoperative planning of root canal treatment should be thorough and include an assessment of the patient's signs and symptoms in addition to the evaluation of complementary examinations. In a 27-year-old patient with dyschromia of the lower central incisor, a history of dental trauma, and a positive response to vertical percussion, an initial periapical radiograph was obtained that showed calcification of the canal and presence of a periapical lesion.

Cell Cycle Kinetics and Sister Chromatid Exchange in Mosaic Turner Syndrome.

Life (Basel)

July 2024

Laboratory of Genetics, Institute of Childcare and Pediatrics Martagão Gesteira (IPPMG), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro 21941-912, RJ, Brazil.

Turner syndrome (TS) is caused by a complete or partial absence of an X or Y chromosome, including chromosomal mosaicism, affecting 1 in 2500 female live births. Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) is used as a sensitive indicator of spontaneous chromosome instability. Cells from mosaic patients constitute useful material for SCE evaluations as they grow under the influence of the same genetic background and endogenous and exogenous factors.

Postgraduate Program in Dentistry, University of Grande Rio (UNIGRANRIO), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil; Department of Dental Research, Faculty of Dentistry, Iguaçu University (UNIG), Nova Iguaçu, RJ, Brazil.

Introduction: This ex vivo study evaluated the disinfecting and cleaning effects of root canal preparation using sodium hypochlorite irrigation with 3 different needle designs.

Methods: Mesial roots from extracted mandibular molars with Vertucci class II configuration were anatomically matched based on micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) analyses and distributed into 3 groups (n = 18/group). The canals were contaminated with a mixed bacterial culture for 30 days and then subjected to preparation using 2.

Dens invaginatus is a developmental dental anomaly that can predispose the tooth to pulp and periradicular disease. Management of this condition can be challenging because of anatomic and microbiologic issues. This case report describes the regenerative endodontic treatment using a strategic antimicrobial protocol for management of an immature maxillary lateral incisor with type-II dens invaginatus associated with apical periodontitis in a 13-year-old patient.

Hospital accreditation has become ubiquitous in developing countries. While research acknowledges that accreditation can enhance healthcare quality, efficiency, and safety, concerns persist regarding hospitals' management of conflicts stemming from the diverse institutional logic inherent in this process. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how professional and market logic, alongside conflicts arising from institutional demands, affect compliance with hospital accreditation.

J Endod

February 2024

Postgraduate Program in Dentistry, University of Grande Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Department of Dental Research, Faculty of Dentistry, Iguaçu University, Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Introduction: This study used a correlative multianalytical approach to investigate the bacteriologic conditions in the apical root canal system of treated teeth with or without apical periodontitis and their correlation with the technical quality of the previous root canal obturation and the presence and volume of apical periodontitis lesions.

Methods: Root apexes were obtained from recently extracted root canal-treated teeth with (n = 23) and without (n = 22) apical periodontitis lesions as demonstrated by cone-beam computed tomographic examination. The root apexes were sectioned and subjected to micro-computed tomographic (micro-CT) scanning.
