Postoperative delirium is the most common postsurgical complication in older adults and is associated with an increased risk of long-term cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). However, the neurological basis of this increased risk-whether postoperative delirium unmasks latent preoperative pathology or leads to AD-relevant pathology after perioperative brain injury-remains unclear. Recent advancements in neuroimaging techniques now enable the detection of subtle brain features or damage that may underlie clinical symptoms.

The concentrations of extracellular and intracellular signaling molecules, such as dopamine and cAMP, change over both fast and slow timescales and impact downstream pathways in a cell-type specific manner. Fluorescence sensors currently used to monitor such signals are typically optimized to detect fast, relative changes in concentration of the target molecule. They are less well suited to detect slowly-changing signals and rarely provide absolute measurements of either fast and slow signaling components.

Fibroblasts play a pivotal role in key processes within the heart, particularly in cardiac remodeling that follows both ischemic and non-ischemic injury. During remodeling, fibroblasts drive fibrosis and inflammation by reorganizing the extracellular matrix and modulating the immune response, including toll-like receptor (TLR) activation, to promote tissue stabilization. Building on findings from our prior research on heart tissue from patients with advanced coronary artery disease and aortic valve disease, this study sought to explore specific effects of TLR1, TLR3, and TLR7 activation on NF-κB signaling, proinflammatory cytokine production, and γ-protocadherin expression in cardiac fibroblasts.

East Asians are more likely than North Americans to attend to visual scenes holistically, focusing on the relations between objects and their background rather than isolating components. This cultural difference in context sensitivity-greater attentional allocation to the background of an image or scene-has been attributed to socialization, yet it is unknown how early in development it appears, and whether it is moderated by social information. We employed eye-tracking to investigate context-sensitivity in 15-month-olds in Japan (n = 45) and the United States (n = 52).
