Association of self-reported health problems and interpersonal violence in sport: a cross-sectional study in world-level performing athletes.

Objectives: A paucity of studies assesses the intersection of physical health (injury and illness), mental health and experiences of interpersonal violence (IV, also known as harassment and abuse) in sport. The objectives of this study were to examine the (a) frequency of self-reported physical and mental health problems of elite athletes in the 12 months prior to the survey, (b) differences in physical and mental health between male and female athletes and (c) relationship of athlete health with experiences of IV.

Methods: Elite adult athletes from four sports were approached at eight international events to answer an online questionnaire on their physical and mental health, as well as experiences of IV in sport within the past 12 months.

Empowering Support for Family Members of Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury During the Acute Care: Insights From Family Members and Nurses.

Aim: To investigate the perceptions of family members (FMs) of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and nurses on empowering support and its implementation during the acute phase within Finnish neurosurgical and neurological care in hospital settings, focusing on identifying similarities and differences in their viewpoints.

Design: Participatory qualitative descriptive study.

Methods: Data were collected from seven FMs and 11 nurses using the World Café method in November 2019.

Molecular Phylogeny of the Family Cordulegastridae (Odonata) Worldwide.

In this study, we present the first attempt at a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the entire family of Cordulegastridae involving 60% of its known species. Our analysis is in favor of reclassification of the members of the family into four genera: (i) the monophyletic genus Selys, 1854, with the number of known species reduced by three synonymizations; (ii) the genus Leach in Brewster, 1815 including all members of the group and, as a preliminary solution, the American species Novelo-Gutiérrez, 2018 and, very tentatively, Selys, 1868. The group forms a genus of its own, for which we restored the name Selys 1854, stat.

Undergraduate occupational medicine education in European Medical Schools: better training to meet today's challenges.

Background: Occupational medicine (OM) faces considerable challenges today, one of them related to the university training of future physicians considered suboptimal at a global level as it has been pointed out in many studies. The aim of this study is to update the state of OM medical education in European universities.

Methods: Between March and August 2022, an e-mail survey regarding OM training to undergraduate medical students was conducted among OM professors at European universities in 28 countries (n = 347).

'I take the drugs… to make the sickness to move out of me': key populations' and service provider perspectives about facilitators and barriers to ART adherence and retention in care in Nigeria.

Background: Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) has individual and public health benefits and is critical to improving life expectancy, achieving viral suppression, and reducing the risk of HIV transmission. This qualitative study explored the experience of receiving care as well as perceived facilitators and barriers of treatment initiation, retention in ART care, and adherence to treatment.

Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted among 28 men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSWs) receiving ART services in Lagos and Benue states.

Anatomical classification of feline congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts based on CT angiography: A SVSTS and VIRIES multi-institutional study in 231 cats.

The prevalence of anatomical-based subtypes of feline congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS) has not been completely elucidated. The goal of this study was to use CT angiography to create an anatomical-based nomenclature system for feline congenital EHPSS. Additionally, subjective portal perfusion scores were generated to determine if intrinsic portal vein development was associated with different shunt conformations or patient age at the time of CT.

Application of fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy for quantification of nutrient contents and their plant availability in manure and digestate.

In this study, we assess the feasibility of using Fourier Transform Infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy (FTIR-PAS) to predict macro- and micro-nutrients in a diverse set of manures and digestates. Furthermore, the prediction capabilities of FTIR-PAS were assessed using a novel error tolerance-based interval method in view of the accuracy required for application in agricultural practices. Partial Least-Squares Regression (PLSR) was used to correlate the FTIR-PAS spectra with nutrient contents.

Factors influencing renal replacement therapy modality choice from the nephrologist's perspective.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) offers quality of life and empowerment for persons with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Nevertheless, the prevalence of PD is low in Belgium and Europe in general. Reimbursement, patient mix and late referral have been quoted as underlying reasons.

Clinical Research Informatics: Contributions from 2022.

Objectives: To summarize key contributions to current research in the field of Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) and to select best papers published in 2022.

Method: A bibliographic search using a combination of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors and free-text terms on CRI was performed using PubMed, followed by a double-blind review in order to select a list of candidate best papers to be then peer-reviewed by external reviewers. After peer-review ranking, a consensus meeting between the two section editors and the editorial team was organized to finally conclude on the selected three best papers.

Insights into the Characterization of the Self-Assembly of Different Types of Amphiphilic Molecules Using Dynamic Light Scattering.

The self-assembly of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylsulfate, Triton X-100, and sulfobetaine surfactants in aqueous solutions was examined by dynamic light scattering, both in the presence and absence of 0.1 M NaCl salt, across various temperatures. For each surfactant, critical parameters, such as concentration and phase transition temperatures, of micelles were determined by monitoring changes in the hydrodynamic diameter with concentration and temperature.

Upper Limb Strength and Performance Deficits after Glenohumeral Joint Stabilization Surgery in Contact and Collision Athletes.

Purpose: The primary aim was to identify and quantify differences in interlimb asymmetry magnitudes across a battery of upper extremity strength and performance tests at 4 and 6 months after glenohumeral joint stabilization surgery shoulder stabilization in contact and collision athletes compared with an un-injured group. A secondary aim was to investigate if identified asymmetry magnitudes changed from 4 to 6 months after glenohumeral joint stabilization surgery. The third aim was to explore associations within the different performance and strength variables.

Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane.

The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that continuously impact Earth's atmosphere, is unknown. Because of deflection by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays produced within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, which produces high-energy neutrinos.

Effect of total ankle replacement on the 3-dimensional subtalar joint alignment in varus ankle osteoarthritis.

Background: Varus ankle osteoarthritis (OA) is typically associated with peritalar instability, which may result in altered subtalar joint position. This study aimed to determine the extent to which total ankle replacement (TAR) in varus ankle OA can restore the subtalar alignment.

Methods: Fourteen patients (15 ankles, mean age 61 ± 6 years) who underwent TAR for varus ankle OA were analyzed using semi-automated measurements based on weight-bearing computed tomography.

How patients with severe mental illness experience care provided by psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.

Background: Previous studies in somatic health care revealed that patients find nurse practitioners reliable, helpful, and empathic and feel empowered, at peace, and in control when cared for by nurse practitioners (NPs). Only one study so far considered what value people with severe mental illness (SMI) attached to treatment by a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP).

Purpose: To explore what meaning people with SMI associate with the care provided by a PMHNP.

Acidification and solar drying of manure-based digestate to produce improved fertilizing products.

The increase in energy and fertilizer consumption makes it necessary to develop sustainable alternatives for agriculture. Anaerobic digestion and digestates appeared to be suitable options. However, untreated digestates still have high water content and can increase greenhouse gas emissions during storage and land application.

The effects of overhearing on vocabulary learning in ethnic majority and minority preschool children.

Research shows that infants and preschoolers can learn novel words equally well through addressed speech as through overhearing two adults. However, most of this research draws from samples of ethnic majority children. The current study compares word learning in preschoolers (M age = 5;6) with an ethnic minority and an ethnic majority background (N = 132).

Not within spitting distance: Salivary immunoassays of estradiol have subpar validity for predicting cycle phase.

Salivary steroid immunoassays are widely used in psychoneuroendocrinological studies of menstrual cycle phase, puberty, and menopause. Though manufacturers advertise their assays as suitable, they have not been rigorously validated for these purposes. We collated data from eight menstrual cycle studies across > 1200 female participants and > 9500 time points.
