Survival rates for childhood cancer survivors (CCS) have improved, although they display a risk for early frailty due to the long-term effects of chemo/radiotherapy, including early aging. This study investigates antioxidant defenses and oxidative damage in mononuclear cells (MNCs) from CCS, comparing them with those from age-matched and elderly healthy individuals. Results show impaired antioxidant responses and increased oxidative stress in CCS MNCs, which exhibited uncoupled oxidative phosphorylation, leading to higher production of reactive oxygen species, similar to metabolic issues seen in elderly individuals.

The Role of Eye Movements in the Process of Silicone Oil Emulsification After Vitreoretinal Surgery.

Bioengineering (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Genoa, Via Montallegro 1, 16145 Genoa, Italy.

Emulsification is a feared and common complication of the use of silicone oil (SO) as tamponade fluid after vitrectomy as it potentially associated with significant risks to ocular health, including elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma, corneal and retinal changes. The aim of this study was to investigate the role and interplay of physical factors on the formation of SO emulsion. Experiments were performed in a model of the vitreous chamber with a realistic shape, filled with SO and an aqueous solution containing different concentrations of albumin, an endogenous protein known to modify the interfacial properties between SO and aqueous solutions.

Background: The first post-COVID-19 pandemic year demonstrated an unusual bronchiolitis epidemic in both hemispheres and has been attributed to the removal of barriers implemented during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Several countries reported an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis, with more hospitalizations and a greater need for respiratory support. We aimed to evaluate the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology and management of severe bronchiolitis in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Italy.

Somatic mutations of hematopoietic cells in the peripheral blood of normal individuals refer to clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), which is associated with a 0.5-1% risk of progression to hematological malignancies and cardiovascular diseases. CHIP has also been reported in Multiple Myeloma (MM) patients, but its biological relevance remains to be elucidated.

Does greater variation reside in the larger sex?

Biol Lett

November 2024

Department of Psychological Sciences, Interdisciplinary Neuroscience, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 65211-2500, USA.

The question of whether males or females are the more variable sex is long-standing, and yet to be fully answered. We investigate the relationships between body mass and variation across species using a phylogenetically informed analysis of the body mass of 337 species representing six mammalian orders. Within each order, we found that the larger sex is typically the more variable sex, whether male or female, and the variation-size relationship is arguably often close to unity.

  • This study focused on serum IFN-α2 as a potential marker for disease activity and flare prediction in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (jSLE).
  • Researchers analyzed 222 serum samples from jSLE patients, healthy controls, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis patients to compare IFN-α2 levels across groups and assess its predictive value for disease flares.
  • The results indicated that higher IFN-α2 levels were associated with active disease states and could predict flare risk in jSLE patients, suggesting its utility for monitoring and managing the condition.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has recently enabled to identify four distinct Alzheimer's disease (AD) subtypes: hippocampal sparing (HpSp), typical AD (tAD), limbic predominant (Lp), and minimal atrophy (MinAtr). To date, however, the natural history of these subtypes, especially regarding the presence of subjects switching to other MRI patterns and their clinical and biological differences, remains poorly understood.

Objective: To investigate the clinical and biological underpinnings of longitudinal atrophy pattern progression in AD.

Emotional auditory stimuli influence step initiation in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Neuroscience, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Genetics and Maternal Child Health, University of Genova, Genova, Italy.

Freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be triggered by sensomotor, cognitive or limbic factors. The limbic system's impact on FOG is attributed to elevated limbic load, characterized by aversive stimuli, potentially depleting cognitive resources for movement control, resulting in FOG episodes. However, to date, PD patients with and without FOG have not shown alterations of anticipatory postural adjustments during gait initiation after exposure to emotional images, possibly because visual stimuli are less immediately disruptive than auditory stimuli, which can more directly affect attention and the limbic system.

  • Growth hormone deficiency can either be congenital (present at birth) or acquired (developing later), with acquired cases often linked to issues in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.
  • Brain MRI is crucial for diagnosing these deficiencies since it can reveal important structural abnormalities and assess prognosis.
  • The article focuses on how neuroradiologists evaluate pediatric growth hormone deficiency by examining common findings in MRI scans of the pituitary, along with a summary of normal pituitary development and imaging techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • Poland syndrome (PS) is a rare congenital condition that primarily affects the pectoralis major muscle and presents several thoracic anomalies, necessitating a classification system and treatment algorithm developed in 2016.
  • Between January 2016 and June 2023, 52 PS patients were treated following this algorithm, which included various surgical and conservative procedures; the majority of cases had soft-tissue defects requiring intervention.
  • The results demonstrated that after treatment, many patients improved significantly and could be reclassified; the algorithm proved effective, with few complications reported, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for adolescents.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the assessment of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) using a new hybrid index derived from pressure-wire measurements and angiography, promoting its potential use in clinical settings.
  • Researchers compared this hybrid index, known as IMR, with a traditional bolus thermodilution-based index in a cohort of patients with acute coronary syndrome and stable coronary artery disease.
  • Results indicate that both the new hybrid IMR and the traditional index showed strong correlations and diagnostic accuracy for CMD, suggesting IMR is a simpler and effective alternative for routine clinical use.
