Protection against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and associated clinical sequelae requires well-coordinated metabolic and immune responses that limit viral spread and promote recovery of damaged systems. However, the role of the gut microbiota in regulating these responses has not been thoroughly investigated. In order to identify mechanisms underpinning microbiota interactions with host immune and metabolic systems that influence coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes, we performed a multi-omics analysis on hospitalized COVID-19 patients and compared those with the most severe outcome (i.

The geographic and economic characteristics unique to island nations create a different set of conditions for, and responses to, the spread of a pandemic compared with those of mainland countries. Here, we aimed to describe the initial period of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the potential conditions and responses affecting variation in the burden of infections and severe disease burden, across the six island nations of the WHO's Africa region: Cabo Verde, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, São Tomé e Príncipe and Seychelles. We analysed the publicly available COVID-19 data on confirmed cases and deaths from the beginning of the pandemic through 29 November 2020.

Background: Hypoparathyroidism is common after total thyroidectomy, primarily due to inadvertent disruption of the parathyroid gland blood supply during thyroid dissection. Indocyanine green helps determine the degree of vascularization and correlates with parathyroid gland vitality. It is difficult to determine how the indocyanine green score affects postoperative parathyroid hormone levels because all 4 parathyroid glands must be evaluated during surgery.

Background: Cash transfers, payments provided by formal or informal institutions to recipients, are increasingly used in emergencies. While increasing autonomy and being supportive of local economies, cash transfers are a cost-effective method in some settings to cover basic needs and extend benefits of limited humanitarian aid budgets. Yet, the extent to which cash transfers impact health in humanitarian settings remains largely unexplored.

Nifedipine, an L-type voltage-gated Ca channel (L-VGCC) blocker, is one of the most used tocolytics to treat preterm labor. In clinical practice, nifedipine efficiently decreases uterine contractions, but its efficacy is limited over time, and repeated or maintained nifedipine-based tocolysis appears to be ineffective in preventing preterm birth. We aimed to understand why nifedipine has short-lasting efficiency for the inhibition of uterine contractions.

Background: Free flap reconstruction is the gold standard in complex head and neck reconstruction. The branches of the external carotid vessels (ECVs) are considered the most suitable recipients, but they may be unavailable in patients presenting "frozen necks" or "vessel-depleted necks" due to previous treatments. We report our experience using the transverse cervical vessels (TCV) in these situations.

This study aims to evaluate the association between dolutegravir (DTG) pharmacokinetic parameters and weight changes in treatment-experienced people with HIV (PWHIV) from the Simpl'HIV study newly switched to a dual DTG-based regimen. We used multivariable linear regressions to evaluate the association between DTG pharmacokinetic parameters at week 48 (derived using an established model) and weight change between week 0 and week 48. We adjusted our model for potential confounders including CD4 nadir, female sex, African origin, age, weight at week 0 and presence of a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-based regimen before switch to DTG.

In health outcomes terms, the poorest countries stand to lose the most from these disruptions. In this paper, we make the case for a rational approach to public sector health spending and decision making during and in the early recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on ethics and equity principles, it is crucial to ensure that patients not infected by COVID-19 continue to get access to healthcare and that the services they need continue to be resourced.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Diagnosis of FTD, especially the behavioural variant, is challenging because of symptomatic overlap with psychiatric disorders (depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder). Olfactory dysfunction is common in both FTD and psychiatric disorders, and often appears years before symptom onset.
