Three-dimensional virtual reality-assisted surgical planning for neuronavigated sacrectomy of a chordoma: a technical note.

Int Orthop

November 2024

Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Geneva University Hospitals and University of Geneva, Faculty of Medicine, 4 Rue Gabrielle-Perret-Gentil, Geneva, 1205, Switzerland.

Purpose: Sacral chordomas are slow growing but locally aggressive tumours with a high rate of local recurrence if not completely removed. Surgical resection with negative margins represents the most important survival predictor but it can be challenging to accomplish. Thanks to improvements in intraoperative imaging and surgical techniques, en bloc resection through a partial sacral resection with wide surgical margins has become feasible but it comes with a significant morbidity rate.

Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is the gold standard to investigate the epileptic network in cases of drug-resistant epilepsy. Robot-assisted SEEG is increasingly being used; however, its installation process in the operating room is more difficult than that of the stereotactic frame procedure. New robotic tools and 3D intraoperative imaging ease the setup while achieving the same mechanical precision and a lower complication rate.

Background: Autoinflammation with infantile enterocolitis (AIFEC) is an often fatal disease caused by gain-of-function mutations in the NLRC4 inflammasome. This inflammasomopathy is characterized by macrophage activation syndrome (MAS)-like episodes as well as neonatal-onset enterocolitis. Although elevated IL-18 levels were suggested to take part in driving AIFEC pathology, the triggers for IL-18 production and its ensuing pathogenic effects in these patients are incompletely understood.

Regulatory T cell-derived IL-1Ra suppresses the innate response to respiratory viral infection.

Nat Immunol

Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA.

Regulatory T (T) cell modulation of adaptive immunity and tissue homeostasis is well described; however, less is known about T cell-mediated regulation of the innate immune response. Here we show that deletion of ST2, the receptor for interleukin (IL)-33, on T cells increased granulocyte influx into the lung and increased cytokine production by innate lymphoid and γδ T cells without alteration of adaptive immunity to influenza. IL-33 induced high levels of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) in ST2 T cells and deletion of IL-1Ra in T cells increased granulocyte influx into the lung.

In 2017, in the middle of the armed conflict with the Taliban, the Ministry of Public Health decided that the Afghan health system needed a well-defined priority package of health services taking into account the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries and benefiting from the latest evidence published by DCP3. This leads to a 2-year process involving data analysis, modelling and national consultations, which produce this Integrated Package of Essential health Services (IPEHS). The IPEHS was finalised just before the takeover by the Taliban and could not be implemented.

Inspired by the six quality-of-care goals developed by the Institute of Medicine, woman-centred care (WCC) as model of care is used in maternity services as it gives an emphasis on the woman as an individual and not her status as a patient. Bringing stronger attention to women's needs and values, is proven to have clear benefits for perinatal outcomes, but fails to be known or recognised by healthcare professionals' (HCPs) and implemented. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study aimed to explore HCPs definitions of WCC and identify the degree of agreement and knowledge regarding perinatal indicators when a WCC model of care is implemented.

Department of Pathology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland; READS Unit, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva, Geneva, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Differentiation of fibroblasts to myofibroblasts is governed by the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) through a mechanism involving redox signaling and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Myofibroblasts synthesize proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and display a contractile phenotype. Myofibroblasts are predominant contributors of wound healing and several pathological states, including fibrotic diseases and cancer.

Many countries around the world strive for universal health coverage, and an essential packages of health services (EPHS) is a central policy instrument for countries to achieve this. It defines the coverage of services that are made available, as well as the proportion of the costs that are covered from different financial schemes and who can receive these services. This paper reports on the development of an analytical framework on the decision-making process of EPHS revision, and the review of practices of six countries (Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Zanzibar-Tanzania).
