Dynamic response to short-pulsed U-ion beams of material candidates for vacuum beam windows manufacturing.

The introduction of next-generation extremely energetic particle accelerator facilities, such as the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) or the proposed future circular collider (FCC), will dramatically increase the energy stored in the circulating particle beams. This will critically affect the thermo-physical and mechanical properties of the materials adopted, possibly compromising their reliability during the operating lifetime. In this scenario, it is paramount to assess the dynamic thermo-mechanical response of materials presently used, or being developed for future use, in beam intercepting devices exposed to potentially destructive events caused by the impact of energetic particle beams.

Durable lymphocyte subset elimination upon a single dose of AAV-delivered depletion antibody dissects immune control of chronic viral infection.

To interrogate the role of specific immune cells in infection, cancer, and autoimmunity, immunologists commonly use monoclonal depletion antibodies (depletion-mAbs) or genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs). To generate a tool that combines specific advantages and avoids select drawbacks of the two methods, we engineered adeno-associated viral vectors expressing depletion mAbs (depletion-AAVs). Single-dose depletion-AAV administration durably eliminated lymphocyte subsets in mice and avoided accessory deficiencies of GEMMs, such as marginal zone defects in B cell-deficient animals.

Context counts: a qualitative study on how adolescents activate social resources to develop and practice health literacy.

Background: Recently, the importance of social networks and other contextual factors in shaping health literacy of adolescents has gained recognition. However, research often simply refers to context without explicitly describing it. In this qualitative study, we aimed to explore how adolescents activate their (social) resources to develop and practice health literacy within a Swiss cantonal school health service program and in their everyday lives.

A simple, subjective, knee self-evaluation using a single question can be used for a quick assessment of patients undergoing knee surgery.

Purpose: The use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) is the cornerstone of clinical research for surgical disciplines, but the use in daily routine can be challenging. One of the most widespread PROMS in knee surgery is the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) questionnaire. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the potential correlation of the IKDC score with a patient's subjective assessment of the knee using a single question.

Long-Term Cognitive Safety of Achieving Very Low LDL Cholesterol with Evolocumab.

Background: Concerns persist regarding the cognitive safety of achieving very low levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Although short-term studies are reassuring, the long-term cognitive effects of sustained exposure to very low LDL cholesterol levels through combined proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibition and statin therapy remain unknown.

Methods: This prospective study enrolled a subset of adults with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease who had completed a neurocognitive substudy (EBBINGHAUS) of a placebo-controlled randomized trial of evolocumab (FOURIER) and were eligible for a long-term open-label extension.

The relationship between muscle mass changes and protein or energy intake in critically ill children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Survivorship after pediatric critical illness is high in developed countries, but many suffer physical morbidities afterwards. The increasing focus on follow-up after critical illness has led to more pediatric studies reporting muscle mass changes (using ultrasound), albeit with different results. A systematic literature review was undertaken examining muscle mass changes, assessed by ultrasound of the quadriceps femoris muscle in children who are critically ill.

Neuroblastoma response to RAS-MAPK inhibitors and APR-246 (eprenetapopt) co-treatment is dependent on SLC7A11.

Background: We previously demonstrated that APR-246 (eprenetapopt) could be an efficient treatment option against neuroblastoma (NB), the most common pediatric extracranial solid tumor. APR-246's mechanism of action is not completely understood and can differ between cell types. Here we investigate the involvement of well-known oncogenic pathways in NB's response to APR-246.

When social comparison works as a demotivator: Stronger peers mitigate effort levels.

The present study tested the effect of social comparison on effort-related cardiovascular responses. Specifically, we investigated how effort levels are influenced when individuals compare themselves to significantly better peers versus similar or slightly better peers. 43 participants played five-minute video games while displaying the scores of peers who were similar, slightly better, or significantly better, in addition to a control condition without peer scores.

Automated surveillance for surgical site infections (SSI) in hospitals and surveillance networks-expert perspectives for implementation.

Background: This work aims at providing practical recommendations for implementing automated surveillance (AS) of surgical site infections (SSI) in hospitals and surveillance networks. It also provides an overview of the steps, choices, and obstacles that need to be taken into consideration when implementing such surveillance. Hands-on experience with existing automated surveillance systems of SSI (AS SSI systems) in Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Spain is described regarding trend monitoring, benchmarking, quality control, and research for surveillance purposes.

Assessing tafenoquine implementation in Brazil: a qualitative evaluation of perceptions of healthcare providers and Plasmodium vivax patients (QualiTRuST Study).

Background: To eliminate malaria by 2035, Brazil must address Plasmodium vivax. Previously, first-line treatment was chloroquine plus 7-day primaquine (PQ) without glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency testing. In 2021, point-of-care quantitative G6PD testing and single-dose tafenoquine (TQ) were piloted in two municipalities.

The standard account for this priming-of-popout (PoP) phenomenon is that selecting a target increases the attentional priority of its features in subsequent searches. However, empirical tests of this priority account have yielded contradictory findings.

Perceived Biological Bases of Sexual Orientation and Sexual Prejudice: The Moderating Role of Gender and Religious Beliefs.

Prior correlational studies have shown that belief in the biological theory of sexual orientation (BTSO) is associated with more positive attitudes toward homosexuality. However, individuals often interpret scientific evidence in ways that align with their pre-existing beliefs and motivations. This research experimentally investigated whether gender and religiosity moderate heterosexual individuals' responses to scientific evidence either supporting or refuting BTSO.

Geospatial distribution of Hepatitis E seroprevalence in Nepal, 2021.

Background: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute jaundice and poses an important public health problem in low- and middle-income countries. Limited surveillance capacity and suboptimal access to diagnostics leads to under-reporting of HEV infections in affected countries, including Nepal. Serum antibodies against HEV are indicative of past infection.

Clinical Relevance of Computational Pathology Analysis of Interplay Between Kidney Microvasculature and Interstitial Microenvironment.

Background: Interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IFTA), and density and shape of peritubular capillaries (PTCs), are independently prognostic of disease progression. This study aimed to identify novel digital biomarkers of disease progression and assess the clinical relevance of the interplay between a variety of PTC characteristics and their microenvironment in glomerular diseases.

Methods: A total of 344 NEPTUNE/CureGN participants were included: 112 minimal change disease, 134 focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, 61 membranous nephropathy, and 37 IgA nephropathy.

Virus adaptation to heparan sulfate comes with capsid stability tradeoff.

Because of high mutation rates, viruses constantly adapt to new environments. When propagated in cell lines, certain viruses acquire positively charged amino acids on their surface proteins, enabling them to utilize negatively charged heparan sulfate (HS) as an attachment receptor. In this study, we used enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) as model and demonstrated that unlike the parental MP4 variant, the cell-adapted strong HS-binder MP4-97R/167G does not require acidification for uncoating and releases its genome in the neutral or weakly acidic environment of early endosomes.

Quantum Coherence in Networks.

From a quantum information perspective, verifying quantum coherence in a quantum experiment typically requires adjusting measurement settings or changing inputs. A paradigmatic example is that of a double-slit experiment, where observing the interference pattern on the screen in a series of experimental settings where one, the other, and both slits are open unambiguously proves quantum coherence. Here we show that this is not necessary by verifying quantum coherence in a network scenario without the need for inputs.

Scaling Violation in Power Corrections to Energy Correlators from the Light-Ray Operator Product Expansion.

In recent years, energy correlators have emerged as a powerful tool to explore the field theoretic structure of strong interactions at particle colliders. In this Letter we initiate a novel study of the nonperturbative power corrections to the projected N-point energy correlators in the limit where the angle between the detectors is small. Using the light-ray operator product expansion as a guiding principle, we derive the power corrections in terms of two nonperturbative quantities describing the fragmentation of quarks and gluons.

Momentary Depression Severity Prediction in Patients With Acute Depression Who Undergo Sleep Deprivation Therapy: Speech-Based Machine Learning Approach.

Background: Mobile devices for remote monitoring are inevitable tools to support treatment and patient care, especially in recurrent diseases such as major depressive disorder. The aim of this study was to learn if machine learning (ML) models based on longitudinal speech data are helpful in predicting momentary depression severity. Data analyses were based on a dataset including 30 inpatients during an acute depressive episode receiving sleep deprivation therapy in stationary care, an intervention inducing a rapid change in depressive symptoms in a relatively short period of time.

Arterial switch operation: A surgical triumph with long-term management challenges.

Since the late 1980s, the standard approach for treating D-transposition of the great arteries has been the arterial switch operation (ASO), replacing the Mustard/Senning procedure. Although ASO has shown impressive long-term survival rates, recent case series have revealed late complications such as neoaortic dilation and coronary artery stenosis. New findings emphasize the need for comprehensive evaluation of coronary risk and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms leading to coronary artery stenosis and myocardial ischemia over the long term.

The Trauma Training Score: A Novel and Objective Method for Performance Evaluation.

Background: Assessing proficiency in the initial management of a traumatically injured patient is challenging. Previously developed scoring tools frequently looked to evaluate single domains of a trauma leader or team's performance. An updated multi-domain scoring tool is needed to evaluate individual and group performance in the initial phases of trauma resuscitation.

Subpulmonary ventricular function and inflammation are related to clinical heart failure in patients with a systemic right ventricle.

Background: Timely diagnosis of heart failure (HF) in patients with a systemic right ventricle (sRV) is difficult but important since clinical deterioration is fast once HF develops. We aimed to compare echocardiography and biomarker profile between sRV patients with and without HF and patients with a systemic left ventricle diagnosed with HF (sLV-HF).
