Introduction Invasive fungal infections have been attracting attention as significant fatal complications in patients with febrile neutropenia (FN) who undergo intensive chemotherapy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to treat hematological malignancies. Although clinical trials are already underway in other countries, evidence supporting the use of caspofungin (CAS) in FN patients in Japan is still insufficient. Methods A retrospective study of patients treated with CAS for FN associated with hematological diseases between April 2015 and March 2018 was conducted to determine the treatment efficacy and safety.

Article Synopsis
  • Maternal brains adapt for child-rearing through heightened reproductive efforts like pregnancy and interactions with children, although this may impact life expectancy based on findings from non-human studies.
  • In a study of 51 mothers aged 27-46, researchers found that increased reproductive efforts were linked to slower aging, as measured by DNA methylation and brain structure changes.
  • The study revealed that mothers with fewer than four children showed greater precuneus gray matter volume, which appears to help mediate the relationship between the number of children and aging deceleration.

The main lesion of cisplatin nephrotoxicity is damage to proximal tubular cells due to increased apoptosis via the mitochondrial and death receptor pathways, which may be alleviated by appropriate promotion of autophagy. Fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-α) activator, is recently reported to promote autophagy as well as protect against cisplatin nephrotoxicity, although the mechanisms were only partially analyzed. Here, the detailed mechanisms of these putative protective effects were investigated in a murine renal proximal tubular (mProx) cell line.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how differences in DNA methylation relate to brain structure variations in children with ADHD, utilizing monozygotic twins who are discordant for the disorder.
  • It identified 61 potential DNA methylation sites linked to ADHD, with a notable finding of increased methylation at a specific gene, replicated in a larger case-control study.
  • Results showed that children with ADHD had lower gray matter volume in critical brain regions associated with language and emotional control, suggesting that DNA methylation may contribute to these structural changes and the disorder's pathology.

This study presents a new blood pressure (BP) estimation algorithm utilizing machine learning (ML). A cuffless device that can measure BP without calibration would be precious for portability, continuous measurement, and comfortability, but unfortunately, it does not currently exist. Conventional BP measurement with a cuff is standard, but this method has various problems like inaccurate BP measurement, poor portability, and painful cuff pressure.

The Pain Vigilance and Awareness Questionnaire (PVAQ) is a questionnaire for non-clinical and clinical cases of patients, such as those suffering from chronic pain. Moreover, it is used for evaluation of two aspects of habitual attention to pain: attention to pain and attention to changes in pain. As the PVAQ assesses two different aspects of attention function, different neural basis may present.

In a previous study, we demonstrated that the accumulation of parenting stress during prolonged school closures and restrictions on daily activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan indicates the need for mental health intervention for parents at higher risk of parenting stress. However, few studies have focused on parenting stress in other Asian countries, although they have experienced higher numbers of infections. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether parenting stress among caregivers increased across Asia due to school closures and restrictions on activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine whether there were any country-specific, cross-country, or cross-regional risk factors for increased parenting stress.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is regarded as one of the therapeutic options added to standard care to improve lower-limb outcomes in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). However, the current guidelines specify that HBOT should not be offered instead of revascularization to prevent limb loss in CLTI patients. The aim of the HOTFOOT study is to examine the impact of HBOT on wound healing in CLTI patients after successful endovascular therapy (EVT).
