Cluster of Excellence livMatS, FIT-Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies, University of Freiburg im Breisgau, Georges-Köhler-Allee 105, D-79110, Freiburg, Germany.

[2π + 2π]-photocycloadditions and their ability to trigger controlled and reversible photoligation through disparate wavelengths provide an attractive platform to unlock advanced functionalities in soft materials. Yet, among the limited amount of functional motifs enabling reversible photoreactions, cyclability is often overlooked due to poor reaction yield and orthogonality. In this study, the advantageous photocharacteristics of the previously underexplored N-methyl-quinolinone photoresponsive motif are leveraged to create a covalent gated system, enabling controlled formation and cleavage of covalent bonds on demand.

Direct regression modeling of the subdistribution has become popular for analyzing data with multiple, competing event types. All general approaches so far are based on non-likelihood based procedures and target covariate effects on the subdistribution. We introduce a novel weighted likelihood function that allows for a direct extension of the Fine-Gray model to a broad class of semiparametric regression models.

The botulinum toxin legend of Reinhard Heydrich's death: The end of "Himmler's brain".

Neurology

July 2017

From the Departments of Neuromuscular Diseases and Anatomy (L.T.), CHRU Besançon, University of Franche-Comté, France; Department of Neurology (W.J.), University of Freiburg-im-Breisgau, Germany; and Genolier Swiss Medical Network and Department of Neurology and Neurorehabilitation (J.B.), Clinique Valmont, Glion, Switzerland.

The high-ranking German Nazi Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942) was one of the main organizers of the mass murder of Jews during the Second World War. He died on June 4, 1942, in Prague after having been wounded in Operation Anthropoid planned by the British intelligence services. Since the 1970s and 1980s, Heydrich's death has been frequently presented in British, American, and French literature as the consequence of a bacteriologic attack.

Treatment with herbal medicines is very popular in Europe. In order to get information on the evidence of effectiveness of oral herbal medicines in the treatment of pain in the joints or lower back, OVID(MEDLINE), PUBMED and COCHRANE COLLABORATION LIBRARY were searched back to 1985 for systematic reviews. The level of evidence of effectiveness was defined as strong - at least two confirmatory studies demonstrating a clinical relevant effect, moderate - one confirmatory study with a clinical relevant effect and/or multiple exploratory studies of good quality; otherwise the evidence was insufficient or conflicting in the case of inconsistent findings.

We examined and compared 22 human hearts (6 normal hearts, 4 with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and 12 after acute ischaemia) for their DNA and collagen content and their cell number. A positive correlation between total heart weight and DNA content was demonstrated in all hearts. The relative DNA content decreased and the rate of polyploidy increased in the infarcted and hypertrophied hearts.

The neu/c-erbB-2 oncogene encodes a 185 kd transmembrane protein (p185). Here we have used the monoclonal antibody (mAb) 3B5 to determine the expression of p185 in a series of fixed biopsy specimens of 180 human brain tumors, including the most frequent entities and, in addition, 18 recurrent gliomas with malignant progression. In summary, 3B5 immunoreaction was most prominent in astrocytomas of different grades of malignancies and in meningiomas.

Almost all decisions with regard to allowing or forbidding research with and on the embryo as well as any other diagnostic invasion into the embryo depend on what kind and range of protection human life in this early stage of its development is or should be entitled to. This question is commonly referred to as that of the 'moral status' of the embryo or-with special regard to legal provisions and sanctions-as its 'legal status'. The answer to this fundamental question, however, is much debated and highly controversial, both nationally and internationally.

Novel erythrocytic inclusion bodies, characterized by strong beta-glucuronidase activity, are described. Their physicochemical properties differ substantially from those of known inclusion bodies and they are mainly observed in patients with liver damage. Since these inclusions occur almost exclusively in erythrocytes, the intraerythrocytic beta-glucuronidase must originate from an extraerythrocytic source, perhaps entering erythrocytes via a receptor-mediated endocytotic pathway.

The effect of dynorphin A-(1-13) (Dyn A-(1-13] and other opioids on the cytosolic free calcium concentration [(Ca2+]i) in rat anterior pituitary cells was examined using the fluorescent indicator fura-2. A commercial synthetic Dyn A-(1-13) preparation elevated [Ca2+]i. Results, which were obtained with receptor antagonists, and in LHRH receptor radioligand binding studies as well as by HPLC combined with LHRH radioimmunoassay, strongly suggest that this effect of the dynorphin preparation was due to contamination with a LHRH-like compound.

Arachidonic acid elevates cytosolic free calcium concentration in rat anterior pituitary cells.

Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol

September 1988

Department of Pharmacology, University of Freiburg im Breisgau, Federal Republic of Germany.

Arachidonic acid is liberated from phospholipids by various hypothalamic releasing hormones and may be involved in stimulus-secretion coupling in rat adenohypophysis. In the present study, the effect of exogenous arachidonic acid on calcium homeostasis in rat anterior pituitary cells was investigated in vitro. Arachidonic acid markedly stimulated the release of various anterior pituitary hormones (beta-endorphin, luteinizing hormone, growth hormone).

Changes in membrane potential may influence Ca2+-dependent functions through changes in cytosolic free calcium concentration [( Ca2+]i). This study characterized pharmacologically those voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels in normal rat anterior pituitary cells that are involved in the elevation of [Ca2+]i upon high potassium-induced membrane depolarization. The [Ca2+]i was monitored directly by means of the intracellularly trapped fluorescent indicator fura-2.

Arginine-vasopressin (AVP) stimulates adrenocorticotropin and beta-endorphin release from corticotrophs of the anterior pituitary gland through mechanisms which are not initiated by an elevation of the cellular levels of adenosine-3',5'-cyclic-monophosphate. In the present study the effect of AVP on the cytoplasmic concentrations of free calcium ions in rat anterior pituitary cells was examined. Cytosolic free Ca2+ concentrations were monitored directly using the new, intracellularly trapped fluorescent indicator fura-2.
