Background: C-reactive protein (CRP) represents a routine diagnostic marker of inflammation. Dissociation of native pentameric CRP (pCRP) into the monomeric structure (mCRP) liberates proinflammatory features, presumably contributing to excessive immune cell activation via unknown molecular mechanisms.
Results: In a multi-translational study of systemic inflammation, we found a time- and inflammation-dependent pCRP dissociation into mCRP.

Background: The strong relationship between blood pressure (BP) and age is well known. Limited evidence suggests that a steeper age-BP slope may be associated with an increased risk of adverse outcomes. The May Measurement Month campaign enables an investigation of geographic, socioeconomic, and sex differences in age-related BP gradients and their association with public-health outcomes.

Background: In the past decades, reconstructive choices after female genital mutilation extended beyond de-infibulation and scar release. The current trend to expand techniques addressing sexual and aesthetic aspects by reconstructing the clitoris and prepuce, and dissecting the clitoral nerves raises concern, as there is a paucity of evidence on the functional outcomes and suspected iatrogenic lacerations.
Methods: A total of 128 female genital mutilation patients were included in the study.

Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging-transrectal ultrasound (MRI-TRUS)-fusion biopsy (FBx) of the prostate allows targeted sampling of suspicious lesions within the prostate, identified by multiparametric MRI. Due to its reliable results and feasibility, perineal MRI/TRUS FBx is now the gold standard for prostate cancer (PC) diagnosis. There are various systems for performing FBx on the market, for example, software-based, semirobotic, or robot-assisted platform solutions.

Purpose: This contribution explores the underuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in the health sector, what this means for practice, and how much the underuse can cost. Attention is drawn to the relevance of an issue that the European Parliament has outlined as a "major threat" in 2020. At its heart is the risk that research and development on trusted AI systems for medicine and digital health will pile up in lab centers without generating further practical relevance.

Purpose: Subject movement during the MR examination is inevitable and causes not only image artifacts but also deteriorates the homogeneity of the main magnetic field (B ), which is a prerequisite for high quality data. Thus, characterization of changes to B , for example induced by patient movement, is important for MR applications that are prone to B inhomogeneities.
Methods: We propose a deep learning based method to predict such changes within the brain from the change of the head position to facilitate retrospective or even real-time correction.

Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) is a deadly pediatric leukemia driven by pathway mutations, of which >35% are gain-of-function in . Although DNA hypermethylation portends severe clinical phenotypes, the landscape of histone modifications and chromatin profiles in JMML patient cells have not been explored. Using global mass cytometry, Epigenetic Time of Flight (EpiTOF), we analyzed hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) from five JMML patients with mutations.

Background: Estimation of regurgitant fraction by videodensitometry (VD-AR) of aortic root angiograms is a new tool for objective grading of paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Stratification with boundaries at 6% and 17% has been proposed to reflect "none/trace", "mild" and "moderate or higher" PVR.
Objective: We sought to investigate the association of strata of VD-AR with 3-year mortality and to compare VD-AR with visual grading of angiograms.

Background: Anterolateral thigh (ALT) and gracilis muscle flaps have been described as comparable reconstructive options regarding maximal flap dimension and indications. However, split-thickness skin-grafted muscle flaps are generally believed to be inferior to perforator flaps regarding the esthetic outcome of the recipient site. The purpose of this study was to challenge this assumption, comparing the long-term esthetic outcome of the gracilis and the ALT flap.

Background: Reconstruction after female genital mutilation (FGM) has developed from being merely a therapy for complications to addressing body perception and sexuality. However, evidence regarding a direct correlation between FGM and sexual dysfunction is scarce. The present WHO classification provides an imprecise grading system, which makes it difficult to compare present studies with treatment outcomes.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an early-stage acute phase protein and highly upregulated in response to inflammatory reactions. We recently identified a novel mechanism that leads to a conformational change from the native, functionally relatively inert, pentameric CRP (pCRP) structure to a pentameric CRP intermediate (pCRP*) and ultimately to the monomeric CRP (mCRP) form, both exhibiting highly pro-inflammatory effects. This transition in the inflammatory profile of CRP is mediated by binding of pCRP to activated/damaged cell membranes via exposed phosphocholine lipid head groups.

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a member of the highly conserved pentraxin superfamily of proteins and is often used in clinical practice as a marker of infection and inflammation. There is now increasing evidence that CRP is not only a marker of inflammation, but also that destabilized isoforms of CRP possess pro-inflammatory and pro-thrombotic properties. CRP circulates as a functionally inert pentameric form (pCRP), which relaxes its conformation to pCRP* after binding to phosphocholine-enriched membranes and then dissociates to monomeric CRP (mCRP).
