Background: Internalized weight stigma (IWS) is highly prevalent and associated with deleterious mental and physical health outcomes. Initiatives are needed to address IWS and promote effective coping and resilience among individuals who are exposed to weight stigma. We conducted a systematic scoping review of the literature on psychological interventions for IWS and explored their intervention components, feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy at reducing IWS and related negative physiological and psychological health outcomes.

Background: Although several surveys of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices have been conducted in the United States, none have focused on the state of Florida, which has the fourth-largest number of certified nursing facilities in the country. A needs assessment survey was conducted to better understand the specific needs and practices of individuals responsible for IPC in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Florida.

Methods: In November and December of 2022, a 90-question online survey was distributed to individuals responsible for IPC activities at 3,690 LTCFs in Florida.

Infections in long-term care facilities pose a critical challenge, with 1 to 3 million serious infections annually and up to 380,000 associated deaths. The vulnerability of aging populations and inadequate infection prevention and control programs underscore the need for intervention. This initiative provided tailored continuing education through 8 virtual learning collaboratives serving 541 infection preventionists.

Background: Pediatric asthma is a heterogeneous disease; however, current characterizations of its subtypes are limited. Machine learning (ML) methods are well-suited for identifying subtypes. In particular, deep neural networks can learn patient representations by leveraging longitudinal information captured in electronic health records (EHRs) while considering future outcomes.

Objectives: The integrated practice unit (IPU) aims to improve care for patients with complex medical and social needs through care coordination, medication reconciliation, and connection to community resources. This study examined the effects of IPU enrollment on emergency department (ED) utilization and health care costs among frequent ED utilizers with complex needs.

Methods: We extracted electronic health records (EHR) data from patients in a large health care system who had at least four distinct ED visits within any 6-month period between March 1, 2018, and May 30, 2021.

  • The study aimed to evaluate the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in older adults taking sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) versus dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4is) among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D).
  • Researchers analyzed data from Medicare beneficiaries, focusing on those without prior AF who were newly prescribed either medication, and used statistical methods to ensure fair comparison between the two groups.
  • Results showed that SGLT2is were linked to a significantly lower risk of AF compared to DPP4is, particularly in certain demographic groups and patients with existing cardiovascular conditions, highlighting the potential benefits of SGLT2

Purpose: Disparities in oral cavity and pharyngeal cancer based on race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status have been reported, but the impact of living within areas that are persistently poor at the time of diagnosis and outcome is unknown. This study aimed to investigate whether the incidence, 5-year relative survival, stage at diagnosis, and mortality among patients with oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers varied by persistent poverty.

Methods: Data were drawn from the SEER database (2006-2017) and included individuals diagnosed with oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers.

BACKGROUNDSepsis remains a major clinical challenge for which successful treatment requires greater precision in identifying patients at increased risk of adverse outcomes requiring different therapeutic approaches. Predicting clinical outcomes and immunological endotyping of septic patients generally relies on using blood protein or mRNA biomarkers, or static cell phenotyping. Here, we sought to determine whether functional immune responsiveness would yield improved precision.
