Background: The Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) initiative seeks to improve care for older adults through assessing and acting on the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, Mobility). The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) joined the initiative in 2020, and from 2022 to 2023, VA led its first Age-Friendly Action Community, a 7-month online educational series to teach clinicians about implementing the 4Ms across VA care settings.
Methods: The VA Action Community was designed to spread awareness about Age-Friendly care for older Veterans, improve interprofessional team knowledge for providing care guided by the 4Ms, and support AFHS implementation across multiple care settings.

Background: The intensive care unit environment exposes nurses to high-stress situations that potentially affect their mental and physical health. Resilience is a protective factor that can enhance the well-being of intensive care unit nurses.
Objective: To investigate the current evidence regarding resilience in intensive care unit nurses and identify factors that promote resilience.
The American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN) upholds the principle that all persons with pain have equal rights to evidence-based, high quality pain assessment, management, and treatment. This practice recommendation's goals are to 1) summarize known pain-related disparities, inequities, and injustices among commonly marginalized and at risk groups, 2) offer recommendations to ascertain that just and equitable pain care is provided to all people, and 3) outline a call to action for all nurses to embrace diversity, equity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging in order to mitigate pain-related disparities, inequities, and injustices within clinical environments and the nursing profession. This paper provides background and rationale for the 2024 ASPMN position statement on disparities, inequities and injustices in people with pain.

Disparities, inequities, and injustices in populations with pain are historically pervasive and lead to deleterious patient outcomes and perpetuate systemic barriers to achieving equitable pain management. Background: Extensive time spent on documentation in electronic health records (EHRs) impedes patient care and contributes to nurse burnout. Artificial intelligence-based clinical decision support tools within the EHR, such as ChatGPT, can provide care plan recommendations to the perinatal nurse. The lack of explicit methodologies for effectively integrating ChatGPT led to our initiative to build and demonstrate our ChatGPT-4 prompt to support nurse care planning.

Background: Although several surveys of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices have been conducted in the United States, none have focused on the state of Florida, which has the fourth-largest number of certified nursing facilities in the country. A needs assessment survey was conducted to better understand the specific needs and practices of individuals responsible for IPC in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Florida.
Methods: In November and December of 2022, a 90-question online survey was distributed to individuals responsible for IPC activities at 3,690 LTCFs in Florida.

The presence of microbial biofilms in many human chronic wounds led to the hypothesis that biofilms delay healing of these wounds. We tested this hypothesis in a population of 117 older individuals with venous leg ulcers who were receiving standardised therapy, including frequent debridement. Debridement specimens were analysed for the amount of bacterial biomass by two independent methods: a microscopic approach that scored the relative size and number of bacterial aggregates, interpreted as a biofilm metric, and conventional enumeration by agar plating for viable bacteria.

Chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs) comprise the majority of lower-extremity wounds, yet their pathophysiology is not fully understood. While research has shown that microRNAs are an important component of wound inflammation, few have explored the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the healing of CVLUs. This scoping review examines miRNAs in CVLUs and the association with wound healing.

Infections in long-term care facilities pose a critical challenge, with 1 to 3 million serious infections annually and up to 380,000 associated deaths. The vulnerability of aging populations and inadequate infection prevention and control programs underscore the need for intervention. This initiative provided tailored continuing education through 8 virtual learning collaboratives serving 541 infection preventionists.

Importance: Diabetes increases the risk of Parkinson disease (PD). Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, a new glucose-lowering therapeutic class, have shown neuroprotective effects in mechanistic studies. However, the association between SGLT2 inhibitors and PD risk in real-world populations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear.

Background: We examined the association between symptoms of anxiety and depression among individuals with long COVID and five social vulnerabilities (expenses, employment, food insufficiency, housing, and insurance).
Methods: Data from the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey (HPS) detailing COVID incidence, duration, and symptoms between June 1st and November 14th, 2022 contained versions of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-2) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) questionnaires. Associations between anxiety, depression, and the five social vulnerabilities among respondents from different racial and ethnic groups experiencing long COVID were evaluated using generalized binomial logistic regression.

Objective: Most individuals with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) experience symptoms other than claudication and live with undiagnosed PAD yet no tools exist to detect atypical PAD symptoms. The purpose of this study was to identify discriminating PAD symptom descriptors from a community-based sample of patients with no current diagnosis of PAD.
Methods: Symptoms descriptors were obtained in a sample of 22 participants with persistent lower extremity symptoms pre/post exercise.

Objectives: The psychosocial aspects of chronic pain among youth with sickle cell are poorly described and may be better understood within a biopsychosocial model of chronic pain as applied to youth living with sickle cell disease.
Design: A systematic literature review was performed to synthesize the psychosocial factors contributing to chronic pain in this population. Criteria for study inclusion were primary quantitative research studies focused on psychosocial aspects of chronic pain among youth with sickle cell disease.

The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning models to predict infant feeding status from clinical notes in the Epic electronic health records system. The primary outcome was the classification of infant feeding status from clinical notes using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms. Annotation of notes was completed using TeamTat to uniquely classify clinical notes according to infant feeding status.

Chronic wound healing is a complex process that is still not well understood. The tryptophan (TRP)-l-kynurenine (KYN) pathway has recently been under increased scrutiny with regard to wound healing. The study applied metabolomics to elucidate the TRP-l-KYN pathway associated with wound healing in chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLUs).

Suboptimal viral suppression is associated with worse outcomes and increased HIV transmission among women with HIV (WWH). Based on syndemic theory, we hypothesized that women exposed to recent intimate partner violence (IPV) and current drug use would be most likely to have suboptimal HIV viral suppression. We analyzed baseline data from a longitudinal clinical trial (WHAT-IF? Will Having Alcohol Treatment Improve My Functioning?) that enrolled WWH from Miami, FL, who reported heavy drinking.
