A series of sulfonamide-derived quinoxaline 1,4-dioxides were synthesized and evaluated as inhibitors of carbonic anhydrases (CA) with antiproliferative potency. Overall, the synthesized compounds demonstrated good inhibitory activity against four CA isoforms. Compound 7g exhibited favorable potency in inhibiting a CA IX isozyme with a value of 42.

We selected a cohort of 31 consecutive de novo MDS patients with unusual young age (<60 years). We performed exome sequencing (ES) on DNA extracted from noninvasive sources (peripheral blood and saliva), filtering for a panel of 344 genes specifically tailored for detecting GL variants related to clonal and nonclonal cytopenia.

Even in the era of technology-guided medicine, the clinician must integrate into his daily practice a careful anamnesis and physical examination to be conducted within a close doctor-patient relationship. All these elements, together with tools such as teleconsultation and digitalized medical records, are able to significantly increase the effectiveness of health care action.

Notable treatment advances have been made in recent years for patients with myelodysplastic syndromes/neoplasms (MDS), and several new drugs are under development. For example, the emerging availability of oral MDS therapies holds the promise of improving patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Within this rapidly evolving landscape, the inclusion of HRQoL and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is critical to inform the benefit/risk assessment of new therapies or to assess whether patients live longer and better, for what will likely remain a largely incurable disease.

Introduction: We aimed to expand the range of the frontotemporal dementia (FTD) phenotypes assessed by the Clinical Dementia Rating Dementia Staging Instrument plus National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Behavior and Language Domains (CDR plus NACC FTLD).
Methods: Neuropsychiatric and motor domains were added to the standard CDR plus NACC FTLD generating a new CDR plus NACC FTLD-NM scale. This was assessed in 522 mutation carriers and 310 mutation-negative controls from the Genetic Frontotemporal dementia Initiative (GENFI).

Background: A combined deep-penetrating tumour redefined as WNT-activated deep-penetrating/plexiform melanocytoma (DPM), may pose challenging clinical and histological diagnoses.
Objectives: To review the clinicopathological characteristics of combined DPMs and characterize the molecular profile of atypical and malignant forms.
Methods: The study included 51 patients with combined DPMs diagnosed at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and the University of Florence between 2012 and 2020.

Background: In Parkinson's disease (PD), impulsivity as a personality trait may be linked to the risk of developing impulse control disorders (ICDs) during dopaminergic therapy. However, studies evaluating differences in trait impulsivity between patients with PD and healthy controls or between patients with PD with and without ICDs reported partly inconsistent findings.
Objectives: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) of studies comparing Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) scores between patients with PD and healthy controls and between patients with PD with and without ICDs.
Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, Gorlin syndrome) is a rare genetic condition characterized by the early development of numerous cutaneous basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). Although most BCCs are surgically treated with total resection, some of the lesions may proceed to a locally advanced or metastatic stage. Systemic treatment with a hedgehog inhibitors (HHIs) such as Vismodegib or Sonidegib is indicated in this population.

NMR metabolomics is a powerful tool to characterise the changes in cancer cell metabolism elicited by anticancer drugs. Here, the large metabolic alterations produced by two cytotoxic gold carbene compounds in A2780 ovarian cancer cells are described and discussed in comparison to auranofin, in the frame of the available mechanistic knowledge.

Background: National Influenza Centers (NICs) have played a crucial role in the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2. The FluCov project, covering 22 countries, was initiated to monitor the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on influenza activity.
Methods: This project consisted of an epidemiological bulletin and NIC survey.

Background: Several approaches have been described for the excision of parapharyngeal space tumors (PPSTs). Advances in endoscopy gave a further stimulus to the use of the transoral route.
Aims: We present our experience with the endoscopy-assisted transoral approach (EATA) in this regard and a review of the most recent literature about EATA for PPSTs excision.

Prostate cancer remains the second-most common cancer diagnosed in men, despite the increasingly widespread use of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. The controversial clinical implications and cost benefits of PSA screening have been highlighted due to its poor specificity, resulting in a high rate of overdiagnosis and underdiagnosis. Thus, the development of novel biomarkers for prostate cancer detection remains an intriguing challenge.

Herpes Simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a very common infection often localized in the mucocutaneous junction of the lip. Rarely, it could be detected also in periodontal tissues, associated with an elevated risk of periodontal disease progression and gingival recessions. Recently, HSV-1 and numerous co-infections have been reported in literature associated with the Coronavirus and subsequent COVID-19 disease.

Research Question: Does the embryologist performing the embryo transfer impact the cycle outcome, in terms of ongoing pregnancy rate (OPR)?
Design: This single-centre retrospective study analysed the results, corrected for main confounders, from 28 embryologists and 32 physicians who performed respectively 24,992 and 24,669 fresh embryo transfers (either at cleavage or blastocyst stage) during a 20-year period from January 2000 to December 2019, in a university-affiliated tertiary care assisted reproductive technology (ART) centre. Primary outcome was OPR, defined as the number of viable pregnancies that had completed at least 12 weeks of gestation on the total number of embryo transfers performed. The study also assessed whether the embryologist's experience, measured in terms of number of embryo transfers performed prior to the day of the procedure, had an impact on their performance.

Background: For patients with lower-risk (LR) myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), overall survival (OS) is rarely a primary clinical trial endpoint. Treatments such as lenalidomide can reduce red blood cell (RBC) transfusion burden (TB) and serum ferritin, but the long-term impact on OS remains undetermined.
Patients And Methods: Data from 3 trials evaluating lenalidomide in patients with LR-MDS (the phase 2 MDS-003 and phase 3 MDS-004 trials in del[5q]; the phase 3 trial MDS-005 in non-del[5q] patients) were pooled.
