Potential Role of Extracellular Vesicles in the Pathophysiology of Drug Addiction.

Mol Neurobiol

August 2018

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Findlay, 1000 N. Main Street, Findlay, OH, 45840, USA.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small vesicles secreted by cells and are known to carry sub-cellular components including microRNA, proteins, and lipids. Due to their ability to transport cargo between cells, EVs have been identified as important regulators of various pathophysiological conditions and can therefore influence treatment outcomes. In particular, the significance of microRNAs in EV-mediated cell-cell communication is well-documented.

f Professor, Department of Community Medicine , Kathmandu Medical College, Kathmandu University, Sinamangal , Kathmandu , Nepal.

Previous studies report high respirable silica exposures among clay brick workers globally; however, there are little data on exposures among workers in fixed chimney Bull's trench kilns, the predominant kiln type in Kathmandu valley, Nepal. We investigated respirable silica exposures among workers (N = 46) in five similar exposure groups (SEGs). Mean exposures were highest for red brick loading/carrying (331 μg/m), followed by green brick stacking (223 μg/m), fireman (102 μg/m), coal crushing/carrying (92 μg/m), and green brick molding (71 μg/m).

Previous studies have revealed variations in the urogenital system morphology of amphibians. Recently, the urogenital system of salamanders was reviewed and terminology was synonymized across taxa. Discrepancies exist in the terminology describing the urogenital system of anurans, which prompted our group to develop a complete, detailed description of the urogenital system in an anuran species and provide nomenclature that is synonymous with those of other amphibian taxa.

August 2017

Departments of Health and Human Performance & Physical Therapy, College of Health Professions, The University of Findlay, Findlay, OH 45840, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between multi-planar proximal tibial slopes and the risk of osteoarthritis and ACL injuries, highlighting the need for efficient measurement methods.
  • An automated Matlab-based approach was developed to measure tibial slope geometries from MRI scans, showing better repeatability and efficiency compared to existing methods.
  • Findings revealed that females generally have steeper lateral and medial tibial slopes than males, suggesting potential implications for clinical assessments and surgical planning related to knee injuries.

We present a radio-frequency (RF) sensor and its measurement results of three volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at multiple frequency points from ∼ 2 to ∼ 11 GHz, which is a convenient range in our examination. The sensor is based on a simple RF interferometer and uses two coplanar waveguides (CPWs), A and B of 5 and 25 mm length, respectively, as VOC sensing electrodes. Approximately 70-nm-thick poly copolymer films are coated on CPW surfaces for VOC adsorption and concentration.

A Laboratory Comparison of Emission Factors, Number Size Distributions, and Morphology of Ultrafine Particles from 11 Different Household Cookstove-Fuel Systems.

Environ Sci Technol

June 2017

Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency , 109 T.W. Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina 27709, United States.

Ultrafine particle (UFP) emissions and particle number size distributions (PNSD) are critical in the evaluation of air pollution impacts; however, data on UFP number emissions from cookstoves, which are a major source of many pollutants, are limited. In this study, 11 fuel-stove combinations covering a variety of fuels and different stoves are investigated for UFP emissions and PNSD. The combustion of LPG and alcohol (∼10 particles per useful energy delivered, particles/MJ), and kerosene (∼10 particles/MJ), produced emissions that were lower by 2-3 orders of magnitude than solid fuels (10-10 particles/MJ).

Background: Bricks have been manufactured in Nepal for hundreds of years and are seen as a component of Nepalese sculpture and architecture. Large quantities of hazardous materials including high concentrations of particulate matter are emitted on a daily basis from brick kilns. Exposure to these hazardous materials can lead to adverse consequences on the environment and human health.

Approximately 900,000 people are affected by some sort of venous thromboembolic (VTE) event every year in the United States. VTE diagnosis used to mean treatment with medications that required routine lab monitoring for safety and efficacy. Activated factor X (FXa) inhibition has emerged as a convenient pathway for management of VTE and currently three FXa inhibitors are available for anticoagulation management - rivaroxaban, apixaban, and edoxaban.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Fine Particulate Matter Emitted from Burning Kerosene, Liquid Petroleum Gas, and Wood Fuels in Household Cookstoves.

Energy Fuels

January 2017

Office of Research and Development, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 109 T.W. Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina 27709, United States.

This study measures polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compositions in particulate matter emissions from residential cookstoves. A variety of fuel and cookstove combinations are investigated, including: (i) liquid petroleum gas (LPG), (ii) kerosene in a wick stove, (iii) wood (10 and 30% moisture content on a wet basis) in a forced-draft fan stove, and (iv) wood in a natural-draft rocket cookstove. The wood burning in the natural-draft stove had the highest PAH emissions followed by the wood combustion in the forced-draft stove and kerosene burning.

Engineering Center for Orthopaedic Research Excellence (ECORE), Departments of Bioengineering and Orthopaedic Surgery, Colleges of Engineering and Medicine, The University of Toledo, 2801 W. Bancroft Street, Toledo, OH 43606, USA; College of Health Professions, The University of Findlay, 1000 N. Main Street, Findlay, OH 45840, USA. Electronic address:

Background: The proximal tibia is geometrically complex, asymmetrical, and variable, is heavily implicated in arthrokinematics of the knee joint, and thus a contributor to knee pathologies such as non-contact anterior cruciate ligament injury. Medial, lateral, and coronal tibial slopes are anatomic parameters that may increase predisposition to knee injuries, but the extent to which each contributes has yet to be fully realized. Previously, two-dimensional methods have quantified tibial slopes, but more reliable 3D methods may prove advantageous.

Introduction: Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) has tremendously improved the life expectancy of the HIV-infected population over the past three decades. Protease inhibitors have been one of the major classes of drugs in HAART regimens that are effective in treating HIV. However, the emergence of resistance and cross-resistance against protease inhibitors encourages researchers to develop new PIs with broad-spectrum activity, as well as novel means of enhancing the efficacy of existing PIs.

Effects of xenobiotics can be organizational, permanently affecting anatomy during embryonic development, and/or activational, influencing transitory actions during adulthood. The organizational influence of endocrine-disrupting contaminants (EDC's) produces a wide variety of reproductive abnormalities among vertebrates that exhibit temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Typically, such influences result in subsequent activational malfunction, some of which are beneficial in aquaculture.

Detecting and monitoring NO, SNO and nitrite .

Future Sci OA

January 2015

Chemistry Department, Wake Forest University, 1834 Wake Forest Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, USA.

The detection and quantification of nitric oxide and related reactive nitrogen species is vital to the understanding of the pathology and/or treatment of numerous conditions. To that end, several detection and quantification methods have been developed to study NO, as well as its redox relatives, nitrite and nitrosothiols. While no single technique can offer a complete picture of the nitrogen cycle in a given system , familiarity with the benefits and limitations of several common tools for NO determination can assist in the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics.
