Objective: To evaluate the precision and accuracy of 3 common methods (method 1, actual draws of the volume remaining; method 2, weight tracking of the volume remaining and/or the volume removed; and method 3, discrepancy percentage at the end of each vial) for monitoring volumes in vials of injectable controlled drugs.

Methods: For methods 1 and 2, doses were drawn from a vial containing a known amount of sterile water. For method 1, after each dose was removed, the remaining quantity of liquid was withdrawn, measured, and reinjected into the vial.

Currently, there is limited histological data for spermatid morphologies within the testes of squamates. There are only 10 species of lizard that have complete ultrastructural data across the entire process of spermiogenesis, including several species of Sceloporus. These studies have shown that differences can be seen between spermatids of saurians within the same family or genus.

Levetiracetam (LEV) is an anti-epileptic drug used extra-label in dogs. Commercially available extended-release formulations (LEV-ER), administered twice daily, cannot be crushed or split, limiting their use in small dogs. A compounded LEV-ER formulation (PO-COMP) can purportedly be partitioned without loss of extended-release properties.

A two-compartmental mathematical pharmacokinetic model with first-order elimination of patients receiving CAPD of 4 exchanges for 6 h with 2 L of dialysate used in each cycle was developed to predict daptomycin disposition in 120 h of therapy. The pharmacodynamic target was plasma AUC/MIC equal to or greater than 666. The dose that achieved at least 90% of the probability of target attainment was defined as an optimal dose.

Article Synopsis
  • Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) is a significant source of dioxin (DXN) emissions, highlighting the need for effective measurement and control strategies.
  • Current research primarily focuses on measuring DXN emissions at the stack level, but comprehensive models are needed to account for DXN generation and absorption throughout the entire waste incineration process.
  • This article presents a novel modeling framework that utilizes advanced machine learning techniques to analyze DXN concentrations across all phases, using real data from an MSWI plant, ultimately aiming to improve pollution control efforts.

Unveiling dioxin dynamics: A whole-process simulation study of municipal solid waste incineration.

Sci Total Environ

December 2024

Faculty of Information Technology, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China; Beijing Laboratory of Smart Environmental Protection, Beijing 100124, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The article discusses how theoretical research explains the formation of dioxin (DXN) during the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), highlighting discrepancies between predicted and actual DXN concentrations.
  • It identifies key factors affecting these discrepancies, including the type of waste treatment, waste characteristics, and operational controls, while noting that the process of DXN generation, adsorption, and emission is not fully understood.
  • To address this, the authors propose a detailed numerical simulation model that incorporates multiple stages of DXN concentration evolution, aiming to improve strategies for reducing DXN emissions and advancing intelligent control technologies in MSWI plants.

The 2023-2024 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Research and Graduate Affairs Committee ("the Committee") was charged with developing programs focused on career and professional development for researchers, new faculty, and graduate students in colleges and schools of pharmacy. After reviewing exiting resources available to pharmacy faculty for grant writing, the Committee recognized a need for more comprehensive, diverse, and tailored resources for pharmacy faculty. The Committee, therefore, focused its effort on creating an intensive grant writing course intended for independent pharmacy researchers without previous major grant awards that would support writing for career development and research grant applications and cater to faculty in translational, clinical sciences, and pharmacy practice, along with fellows and residents.

Department of Psychology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH, USA; J.P. Scott Center for Neuroscience, Mind, & Behavior, Bowling Green, OH, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies on pigeons indicated cognitive decline with age but did not show the expected brain atrophy found in older mammals.
  • Coppola and Bingman (2019) found increased brain mass in older homing pigeons, possibly due to their younger age at the time of study.
  • The current research found that older Carneau pigeons (averaging 5.34 years older) actually exhibited significant brain atrophy, marking the first evidence of this phenomenon in pigeons.
