Anal Methods

January 2025

Rede Nordeste de Biotecnologia, Universidade Federal de Sergipe, São Cristóvão, SE 49100-000, Brazil.

Analytical chemistry demands precise sample preparation methods to ensure accurate qualitative and quantitative determinations, especially those capable of clean-up and preconcentration of target analytes. Extraction plays a crucial role in enhancing the selectivity and sensitivity of analytical procedures. Thus, Energized Dispersive Guided Extraction (EDGE) has emerged as an innovative alternative to traditional methods, such as Soxhlet, maceration, and percolation, as well as modern techniques like Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE), Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), and Microwave or Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (MAE and UAE).

Serum β-secretase 1 (sBACE1) activity in subjective cognitive decline: an exploratory study.

Geroscience

January 2025

Department of Translational Medicine and for Romagna, Università of Ferrara, Via Luigi Borsari 46, 44121, Ferrara, Italy.

β-Secretase-1 (BACE1) plays a key role in the regulation of cerebral amyloid-β homeostasis, being involved in amyloidogenic and, as recently found, amyloidolytic pathways. Growing evidence indicates that increased serum BACE1 (sBACE1) activity might represent an early biomarker for Alzheimer's disease. Here, we tested the hypothesis that an increase in sBACE1 activity may already occur in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD).

The cornea is the primary refracting surface of the eye, requiring precise curvature to ensure optimal vision. Any distortion in its shape may result in significant visual impairment. Corneal ectasias, such as keratoconus (KC), is characterized by gradual thinning and protrusion of the thinned area, due to biomechanical weakening of the tissue, leading to astigmatism and vision loss.

The concepts of code biology.

Biosystems

January 2025

Dipartimento di Morfologia ed Embriologia, University of Ferrara, Italy. Electronic address:

Today there are two dominant paradigms in Biology: the idea that 'Life is Chemistry' and the idea that 'Life is Chemistry plus Information'. There is also a third paradigm, the idea that 'Life is Chemistry, Information and Meaning' but today this is a minority view, despite the fact that meaning is produced by codes and there is ample experimental evidence that hundreds of codes exist in living systems. This is because that evidence has not yet reached the university books, but what exists in nature is bound to exist, one day, also in our books and at that point the codes will become an integral part of biology.

The analysis of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) in vegetable oils is currently associated with high uncertainty due to various factors ranging from sample preparation to data interpretation. One significant factor is the coelution of biogenic compounds of terpenic origin with the MOAH fraction during chromatographic analysis. The common purification method is epoxidation, a chemical reaction that changes the polarity of the interferences, allowing their separation from MOAH.

This case report describes a complex full-step asymmetrical Class II division 1 high-angle in an adult patient treated by extraction of compromised first molars with a preadjusted lingual appliance. Since the patient presented severe sagittal and vertical discrepancies combined with an Izard orthofrontal profile with upper lip protrusion, an extraction camouflage was performed with the twofold aim of obtaining ideal occlusal relationship and profile improvement, correcting occlusal plane cant by selective intrusion with interradicular miniscrews. Appropriate biomechanical strategies, including extraction choice and anchorage control during space closure, were needed to achieve the planned results.

Research on the cerebellum and its functional organization has significantly expanded over the last decades, expanding our comprehension of its role far beyond motor control, including critical contributions to cognition and affective processing. Notably, the cerebellar lateralization mirrors contralateral brain lateralization, a complex phenomenon that remains unexplored, especially across different stages of life. The present work aims to bridge this gap by providing a comprehensive scoping review of the lateralization of motor, cognitive, and affective functioning within the cerebellum across the lifespan.
