Several attempts have been made to elucidate the pathogenesis of drug-induced gingival overgrowth (DIGO), which is triggered by the chronic use of certain drugs that fall into three main categories: anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers. Previous research suggests that cytokines and impaired cellular functions play a role in DIGO. Of particular interest are macrophages, immune cells that can switch between M1 (pro-inflammatory) and M2 (anti-inflammatory) phenotypes in response to exogenous signals and stimuli.

Colorectal surgery is one of the specialties that have significantly benefited from the adoption of robotic technology. Over 20 years since the first robotic rectal resection, the Intuitive Surgical Da Vinci system remains the predominant platform. The introduction of new robotic systems into the market has enabled the first documented total mesorectal excision (TME) using alternative platforms.

Assessing the suitability of older adults with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for intensive chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation remains a long-standing challenge. Geriatric assessment, which involves the evaluation of multiple dimensions of health, may influence a patient's ability to tolerate intensive or mild-intensity approaches, including treatment-related mortality. Prospective studies are required to validate different fitness criteria, in addition to making it possible to compare the effectiveness of geriatric assessment-based fitness against other criteria, in order to identify which aspects of geriatric assessment are linked to treatment tolerance.

Objective: Neurofilament light chain proteins (NfLs) are considered a promising biomarker of neuroaxonal damage in several neurological diseases. Their measurement in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with dementia may be especially useful. Our aim was to compare the NfL measurement performance of two advanced technologies, specifically the Ella™ microfluidic platform and the Lumipulse™ fully automated system, in patients with cognitive disorders.

Background: Hospital-associated functional decline affects nearly one-third of the hospitalized older adults. The aim of this trial is to investigate the effect of a cognitive stimulation intervention provided via immersive virtual reality (IVR), with or without a multicomponent physical exercise intervention (ME) in hospitalized patients aged 75 or older with severe functional dependency at admission (Barthel Index < 60 points).
Methods: This clinical randomized controlled trial will be conducted in the Acute Geriatric Unit of a tertiary hospital in Spain.

Background: Macrophages are major effectors in regulating immune response and inflammation. The pro-inflammatory phenotype (M1) is induced by the activation of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on the macrophage surface, which recognizes lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of Gram-negative bacterial wall, and by the binding of interferon-gamma (IFNγ), a cytokine released by activated T lymphocytes, to its receptor (IFNGR). Among the pathways activated by LPS/IFNγ is the Notch pathway, which promotes the M1 phenotype.

Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) are broad diagnoses that encompass a range of sudden-onset neuropsychiatric symptoms in children, which can include obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tics, anxiety, emotional instability, and cognitive difficulties. Unlike PANDAS, PANS is not strictly linked to group A streptococcal infections but can be triggered by various infectious or environmental factors. Lights and shadows remain upon the management of children with PANS and PANDAS and there is no clear consensus regarding definition, diagnostic criteria, treatment, and follow-up.

Background: The use of a watch-and-wait management strategy after a complete clinical response to neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer is increasing. However, insights into implementation, treatments, and outcomes on a national level in the United States are limited.
Objective: To investigate and report on watch-and-wait management practices and outcomes in the United States.

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the fourth International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to AA, which took place in February 2023 in Padua, Italy. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field of high-energy heavy-ion physics and to stimulate the formulation of concrete suggestions for making progresses on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Background: The present observational cross-sectional study aimed at investigating the prevalence of feeding and eating disorders (FEEDs) in adults with intellectual disability (ID)/intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) with or without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and specific problem behaviours (PBs).
Methods: Two hundred six adults with ID/IDD consecutively attending residential and rehabilitative facilities, 59.2% of which had co-occurring ASD, were assessed for presence of FEEDs by a structured interview specifically developed for the study and Diagnostic Manual - Intellectual Disability criteria.

The Irpinia Fault, also known as the Monte Marzano Fault System, located in the Southern Apennines (Italy), is one of the most seismically active structures in the Mediterranean. It is the source of the 1980, Ms 6.9, multi-segment rupture earthquake that caused significant damage and nearly 3,000 casualties.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the inter-reader agreement of the breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) lexicon.
Materials And Methods: In this IRB-approved, single-center, retrospective study, three breast radiologists, each with different levels of experience, reviewed 462 lesions in 421 routine clinical CEM according to the fifth edition of the BI-RADS lexicon for mammography and to the first version of the BI-RADS lexicon for CEM. Readers were blinded to patient outcomes and evaluated breast and lesion features on low-energy (LE) images (breast density, type of lesion, associated architectural distortion), lesion features on recombined (RC) images (type of enhancement, characteristic of mass enhancement, non-mass enhancement or enhancing asymmetry), and provided a final BI-RADS assessment.

Most organisms possess endogenous circadian clocks that synchronise their physiology and behaviour with environmental cycles, with the light-dark (LD) cycle being the most potent synchronising signal. Consequently, it can be hypothesised that animals that have evolved in the dark, as in caves or deep sea, may no longer possess a functional light-entrained biological clock. In this research, the blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus was selected as a model organism to investigate the potential effects of daily light conditions on the circadian timekeeping mechanisms.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as an effective and safe treatment for patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis. The indication to TAVI should be agreed upon by a Heart Team, and the procedure should be performed in centers with on-site cardiac surgery. However, TAVI complications requiring emergent cardiac surgery (ECS) have become very rare.

Beside the respiratory tract, the skin and the gut represent the first defensive lines of our body against the external insults displaying many important biochemical features able to maintain the epithelial barrier integrity and to regulate the tissue immune responses. The human microbiome is essential in maintaining the tissue homeostasis and its dysregulation may lead to tissue conditions including inflammatory pathologies. Among all external insults, air pollutants have been shown to cause oxidative stress damage within the target tissues via an OxInflammatory response.

Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a debilitating, inflammatory skin disorder. Treatment strategies in patients with HS are challenging; real-world evidence in a HS population is warranted for greater disease understanding. The objective of this analysis was to describe real-world treatment patterns and treatment satisfaction in patients with HS.
