Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition and a leading cause of physical decline and death. COPD prevalence is expected to increase steadily in the coming years, and as a result, the healthcare and social burden of this condition will intensify. In this scenario, a patient-centric approach, the treatable trait (TT) strategy, based on the identification of traits that are clinically relevant, identifiable, monitorable and treatable, has emerged.

Metal ion coordination is crucial in bacterial metabolism, while divalent metal ions serve as essential cofactors for various enzymes involved in cellular processes. Therefore, bacteria have developed sophisticated regulatory mechanisms to maintain metal homeostasis. These involve protein interactions for metal ion uptake, efflux, intracellular transport, and storage.

Background: Data on Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) use in patients presenting with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are limited. Furthermore, Absorb studies including STEMI patients lacked a prespecified implantation technique to optimize BVS deployment. This study examines the 5-year outcomes of BVS in STEMI patients using an optimized implantation strategy and the impact of prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT).

Objective: We aimed to (1) evaluate the cardiac involvement, with a focus on myocarditis, in patients with Still disease included in the multicenter Autoinflammatory Disease Alliance (AIDA) Network Still disease registry; and (2) assess the predictive factors for myocarditis by deriving a clinical risk patient profile for this severe manifestation.
Methods: A multicenter observational study was established, in which consecutive patients with Still disease in the AIDA Network Still disease registry were characterized by cardiac involvement. Cardiac involvement was defined according to the presence of pericarditis, tamponade, myocarditis, and/or aseptic endocarditis.

The Kerr nonlinearity allows for exact analytic soliton solutions in 1+1D. While nothing excludes that these solitons form in naturally occurring real-world 3D settings as solitary walls or stripes, their observation had previously been considered unfeasible because of the strong transverse instability intrinsic to the extended nonlinear perturbation. We report the observation of solitons that are fully compatible with the 1+1D Kerr paradigm limit hosted in a 2+1D system.

For this reason, mitochondrial dysfunction associated with increased ROS production underlies various pathological conditions as well as promotes aging. Chronically increased rates of ROS production contribute to oxidative damage to macromolecules, i.

Bacteria were once thought to be simple organisms, lacking the membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotic cells. However, recent advancements in microscopy have changed this view, revealing a diverse array of organelles within bacterial cells. These organelles, surrounded by lipid bilayers, protein-lipid monolayers, or proteinaceous shells, play crucial roles in facilitating biochemical reactions and protecting cells from harmful byproducts.

Background: Medical humanities can contribute positively to clinical practice and medical education. Therefore, in many countries, medical schools have been progressively incorporating medical humanities into their curriculum. In Italy, only a few medical schools offer a variety of medical humanities courses, often as elective.

We explored the electrochemical behavior of antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) and perylene diimide (PDI)-sensitized ATO (ATO-PDI) for the (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) mediated conversion of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a value-added substrate for alternative polymer synthesis. We first showed that ATO displayed good electrocatalytic properties towards TEMPO, affording a quasi-reversible response with a heterogeneous rate constant on the order of 2×10 cm s. We then evaluated the performance of ATO under exhaustive electrolysis of HMF in basic aqueous electrolyte, reaching 80 % Faradaic Efficiency (FE) for FDCA production.

Introduction: In critically ill patients, individualised strategies for red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) are lacking. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the potential advantages of employing an individualised transfusion strategy compared with a restrictive approach, in unselected intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
Methods: This will be a randomised, multicentre, international trial.

Objective: We assessed reproductive, obstetrical, and oncological outcomes in patients who underwent fertility-sparing treatment by including studies that adhere to the FIGO 2018 staging system.
Methods: Data on recurrence, mortality, pregnancy rate, live birth rate, and preterm delivery rate were collected.
Results: In patients with stages IA1, IA2, and IB1, the recurrence rate was 4.

Shortly after the first case of SARS-CoV-2 was diagnosed a public health emergency (PHE) was declared and a multi-agency response was initiated within the US federal government to create and propagate testing capacity. As part of this response, an unprecedented program designated Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) Tech was established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to facilitate the development of point-of-care tests for the COVID-19. The RADx Tech Clinical Studies Core (CSC), located at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan), with partnering academic, private, and non-governmental organizations around the country, was tasked with developing clinical studies to support this work.

Background And Purpose: Aiming to achieve light sedation via intranasal administration, this study showed that propofol (PPF) did not permeate across the rabbit nasal mucosa ex vivo from its marketed emulsion for injection.
Experimental Approach: Dilution of the emulsion with methyl-β-cyclodextrin in saline solution increased propofol solubility in water and diffusion across the nasal epithelium.
Key Results And Conclusion: Despite these positive effects of the cyclodextrin, the amount of PPF permeated was minimal in 3 h, exceeding the formulation residence time in the nose.

Objectives: Evidence linked metabolic associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) to kidney damage with the potential contribution of the I148M variant of the Patatin-like phospholipase containing domain 3 (PNPLA3) gene. We aimed at investigating the relationship of MASLD and of its genetics with kidney function in children with obesity.
Methods: A comprehensive evaluation including genotyping for the I148M PNPLA3 polymorphism was performed in 1037 children with obesity.

Altered intestinal immune homeostasis leads to chronic inflammation in Crohn's disease (CD). To address disease- and tissue-specific alterations, we performed a T cell-centric mass cytometry analysis of peripheral and intestinal lymphocytes from patients with CD and healthy donors' PBMCs. Chronic intestinal inflammation enforced activation, exhaustion, and terminal differentiation of CD4 and CD8 T cells and a relative enrichment of CD4 regulatory T (Treg) cells.

Chitosan (Ch), a natural polysaccharide, is known for its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and various beneficial properties, including antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The objective of this study is to investigate the functionalization of zinc oxide (ZnO) with chitosan to develop a novel ZnO@Ch adduct for use in cosmetic formulations, specifically as a sun protection agent. The functionalization was achieved through ionotropic gelation, which enhanced the stability and reduced the photocatalytic activity of ZnO, thereby improving its safety profile for skin applications.
