Background: The long-term health-economic consequences of acute stroke are typically extrapolated from short-term outcomes observed in different studies, using models based on assumptions about longer-term morbidity and mortality. Inconsistency in these assumptions and the methods of extrapolation can create difficulties when comparing estimates of lifetime cost-effectiveness of stroke care interventions.

Montmorency cherry (MC) can improve endurance performance, but optimal pre-exercise timing of supplementation and influence of training status on efficacy are unknown. We investigated the effect of MC concentrate ingestion between 30- and 150-min pre-exercise in trained and recreational cyclists on 15-km time trial (TT) performance and exercise economy. Twenty participants (10 recreationally active, RA; 10 trained, T) completed 10 min of steady-state exercise (SSE) at 40%Δ (SSE) and a TT on four separate occasions following an unsupplemented (US), 30-, 90- or 150-min pre-exercise Montmorency cherry concentrate (MCC) supplementation conditions (MCC).

Introduction: We undertook phenotypic characterization of early-onset and late-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adult black African and white European populations with recently diagnosed T2D to explore ethnic differences in the manifestation of early-onset T2D.

Research Design And Methods: Using the Uganda Diabetes Phenotype study cohort of 500 adult Ugandans and the UK StartRight study cohort of 714 white Europeans with recently diagnosed islet autoantibody-negative T2D, we compared the phenotypic characteristics of participants with early-onset T2D (diagnosed at <40 years) and late-onset T2D (diagnosed at ≥40 years).

Results: One hundred and thirty-four adult Ugandans and 113 white Europeans had early-onset T2D.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a new method that more closely represents the heavy to severe exercise domain boundary by evaluating the rates of blood lactate accumulation during the constant power output exercise bouts that are used in the assessment of the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS).

Methods: Eight well-trained male cyclists completed five exercise tests of up to 30 min for the determination of the traditional MLSS (MLSS TRAD ) and a further four maximal tests for the determination of critical power (CP). The rates of change of blood [lactate] between 10 min and the end of exercise in the MLSS tests were plotted against the corresponding power outputs, and a two-segment linear regression model was used to identify individualized break points in lactate accumulation versus power output (modified MLSS [MLSS MOD ]).
