Background And Aims: The spleen serves as an important relay organ that releases cardioprotective factor(s) upon vagal activation during remote ischaemic conditioning (RIC) in rats and pigs. The translation of these findings to humans was attempted.
Methods: Remote ischaemic conditioning or electrical auricular tragus stimulation (ATS) were performed in 10 healthy young volunteers, 10 volunteers with splenectomy, and 20 matched controls.

Background/aim: This study investigated the clinical impact of resection of pelvic sentinel lymph nodes (PSLNs) in squamous cell vulvar cancer (SCVC).
Patients And Methods: Sixty-two groins of 33 patients with SCVC who underwent sentinel lymph node (SLN) resection between 2010 and 2021 at the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany, were analyzed in this retrospective cohort study. The frequency of additionally resectable PSLNs, histological findings, and count rates were analyzed and compared to the findings for inguinal sentinel lymph nodes (ISLNs).

Introduction: Illness perception refers to patients' subjective representations and appraisals of somatic and mental symptoms. These are relevant for self-management and outcome. In clinical practice, patients with functional neurological disorder (FND) often encounter a fragmented biomedical attitude, which leaves them without clear concepts.

Department of Pediatrics II, University Hospital of Essen, University of Essen-Duisburg, Essen, Germany.
Background: Kidney transplantation (KTx) from small donors is associated with inferior graft survival in registry studies, whereas single-center studies show favorable results.
Methods: We compared 175 pediatric KTx from small donors ≤20 kg (SDKTx) with 170 age-matched recipients from adult donors (ADKTx) from 20 centers within the Cooperative European Paediatric Renal Transplant Initiative registry. Graft survival and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were analyzed by Cox regression and mixed models.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury is reduced by cardioprotective adaptations such as local or remote ischemic conditioning. The cardioprotective stimuli activate signaling cascades, which converge on mitochondria and maintain the function of the organelles, which is critical for cell survival. The signaling cascades include not only extracellular molecules that activate sarcolemmal receptor-dependent or -independent protein kinases that signal at the plasma membrane or in the cytosol, but also involve kinases, which are located to or within mitochondria, phosphorylate mitochondrial target proteins, and thereby modify, e.

This retrospective study evaluated 35 children (median age 5.2 years; range 0.4-18) with myelofibrosis (MF), including 33 with primary myelofibrosis and 2 with secondary myelofibrosis transplanted from matched sibling donor (MSD) (n = 17) or non-MSD (n = 18) between 2000 and 2022.

Background: Data examining the impact of sex on liver transplant (LT) outcomes are limited. It is clear that further research into sex-related differences in transplant patients is necessary to identify areas for improvement. Elucidation of these differences may help to identify specific areas of focus to improve on the organ matching process, as well as the peri- and post-operative care of these patients.

Chronic wounds remain a significant clinical challenge both for those affected and for healthcare systems. The treatment is often comprised and complex. All patients should receive wound care that is integrated into a holistic approach involving local management that addresses the underlying etiology and provides for gold standard therapy to support healing, avoid complications and be more cost effective.

Purpose Of Review: To provide an overview of (a) protective effects on mitochondria induced by remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) and (b) mitochondrial damage caused by anticancer therapy. We then discuss the available results of studies on mitochondrial protection via RIC in anticancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity.
Recent Findings: In three experimental studies in healthy mice and pigs, there was a RIC-mediated protection against anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity and there was some evidence of improved mitochondrial function with RIC.

Resection and whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) are standard treatments for brain metastases (BM) but are associated with cognitive side effects. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) uses a targeted approach with less side effects than WBRT. SRS requires precise identification and delineation of BM.

Metabolic syndrome predisposes and contributes to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The minipig strain "Ossabaw" is characterized by a predisposition to develop metabolic syndrome. We compared vasomotor function in Ossabaw minipigs before they developed their diseased phenotype to that of Göttingen minipigs without such genetic predisposition.

Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) represents a phenotype of increased fluid extravasation, resulting in intravascular hypovolemia, extravascular edema formation and ultimately hypoperfusion. While endothelial permeability is an evolutionary preserved physiological process needed to sustain life, excessive fluid leak-often caused by systemic inflammation-can have detrimental effects on patients' outcomes. This article delves into the current understanding of CLS pathophysiology, diagnosis and potential treatments.

Urinary tract obstruction during renal development leads to inflammation, tubular apoptosis, and interstitial fibrosis. Toll like receptors (TLRs) expressed on leukocytes, myofibroblasts and renal cells play a central role in acute inflammation. TLR2 is activated by endogenous danger signals in the kidney; its contribution to renal injury in early life is still a controversial topic.
