Objective: The relationship between aided speech recognition and hearing-aid (HA) amplification was investigated in a retrospective study.
Design And Study Sample: Pure-tone thresholds, aided and unaided speech recognition and real-ear measurements of 635 ears in 374 HA users were reviewed. Ears were classified according to pure-tone average (PTA) and real-ear aided response (REAR) in relation to the targets of NAL-NL2 and DSL v5.

Assessing the response to systemic therapy in neuroendocrine tumors (NET) is challenging since morphological imaging response is often delayed and not necessarily reflective of clinical benefit. The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, demonstrated that zoonotic transmission of animal sarbecoviruses threatens human health but the determinants of transmission are incompletely understood. Here, we show that most spike (S) proteins of horseshoe bat and Malayan pangolin sarbecoviruses employ ACE2 for entry, with human and raccoon dog ACE2 exhibiting broad receptor activity. The insertion of a multibasic cleavage site into the S proteins increased entry into human lung cells driven by most S proteins tested, suggesting that acquisition of a multibasic cleavage site might increase infectivity of diverse animal sarbecoviruses for the human respiratory tract.

In the present work, we aimed to determine the effect of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) on metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors in people at moderate-to-high cardiometabolic risk. The present meta-analysis is based on a systematic literature search of a recent evidence map, which searched five electronic databases, two registers, and Google Scholar, according to PRISMA, until 31 March 2023. Controlled trials comprising adult cohorts with central obesity that compared the effect of WB-EMS versus controls using a continuous score representing MetS were included.

Background: Guideline-recommended hyperkalaemia management includes dietary potassium (K) restriction, bicarbonate correction, diuretics and K binders with dose reduction of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors as a last resort. The extent to which these recommendations are implemented is uncertain, as real-world data on hyperkalaemia management are limited. Rapid, unidirectional pollen tube tip growth is essential for fertilization and widely employed as a model of polar cell expansion, a process crucial for plant morphogenesis. Different proteins and lipids with key functions in the control of polar cell expansion are associated with distinct domains of the plasma membrane (PM) at the pollen tube tip. These domains need to be dynamically maintained during tip growth, which depends on massive secretory and endocytic membrane trafficking.

Background: Real-world data on gene addition therapy (GAT) with onasemnogene abeparvovec (OA), including all age groups and with or without symptoms of the disease before treatment are needed to provide families with evidence-based advice and realistic therapeutic goals. Aim of this study is therefore a population-based analysis of all patients with SMA treated with OA across Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH).
Methods: This observational study included individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) treated with OA in 29 specialized neuromuscular centers in the D-A-CH-region.

The use of optical cavities on resonance with material excitations allows controlling light-matter interaction in both the regimes of weak and strong coupling. We study here the multimode vibrational coupling of low energy phonons in the charge-density-wave material 1T-TaS2 across its insulator-to-metal phase transition. For this purpose, we embed 1T-TaS2 into THz Fabry-Pérot cryogenic cavities tunable in frequency within the spectral range of the vibrational modes of the insulating phase and track the linear response of the coupled phonons across the insulator-to-metal transition.

The emerging laser writing represents an efficient and promising strategy for covalent two dimensional (2D)-patterning of graphene yet remains a challenging task due to the lack of applicable reagents. Here, we report a versatile approach for covalent laser patterning of graphene using a family of trivalent organic iodine compounds as effective reagents, allowing for the engraving of a library of functionalities onto the graphene surface. The relatively weak iodine-centered bonds within these compounds can readily undergo laser-induced cleavage to in situ generate radicals localized to the irradiated regions for graphene binding, thus completing the covalent 2D-structuring of this 2D-film.

Isl1 has been described as an embryonic master control gene expressed in the pericloacal mesenchyme. Deletion of Isl1 from the genital mesenchyme in mice leads to an ectopic urethral opening and epispadias-like phenotype. This study explored the potential causal relationship between ibuprofen (IBU) use and the risk of developing osteoarthritis, a prevalent joint disorder characterized by pain and stiffness. We conducted a two-sample MR analysis using four distinct OA GWAS datasets as outcomes and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with IBU metabolism as exposures. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) and weighted median methods were utilized to assess the causal association by meta-analysis, while pleiotropy and heterogeneity were evaluated using MR-Egger regression and Cochran's Q statistics.
