Environmental judicature and firm productivity: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment.

The impact of environmental governance on firm productivity has been widely discussed, but few studies have examined the function of environmental judicature. Using the establishment of environmental courts as a quasi-natural experiment, this paper examines the relationship between environmental judicature and firm productivity. Our findings show that environmental courts will reduce firm productivity in the short term, chiefly owing to the increased environmental violation costs, environmental reputation costs and environmental compliance costs.

Safety of combined drug use in patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases: an analysis based on the spontaneous reporting database of adverse drug reactions in Hubei Province.

Objective: There is a lack of studies investigating the safety of combination regimens specifically for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of combination drugs for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases using real-world data.

Methods: We analyzed adverse drug reaction data received by the Hubei Adverse Drug Reaction Center from the first quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2022.

Does urban-rural integration contribute to environmental health? Exploring the interplay between urban-rural integration and air quality dynamics in Yangtze River middle reaches city cluster.

Background: Exploring the coordinated relationship between urban-rural integration and air quality has significant implications for promoting urban-rural development, preventing air pollution and ensuring residents' health. This study takes Yangtze River middle reaches city cluster as a case study, calculates the levels of urban-rural integration and air quality development, analyzes their coupled coordination relationship and driving factors, and explores the path of coordinated development.

Methods: This study constructs a coupling coordination degree model to analyze the relationship between the urban-rural integration development level and air quality development level.

Global urban greening and its implication for urban heat mitigation.

Urban vegetation provides essential ecosystem services and benefits to support biodiversity and human well-being in urban areas. However, the dynamic trends, driving factors, and their implications to urban heat mitigation at the global scale remain largely unclear. Here, we used a high-resolution enhanced vegetation index (EVI) dataset to examine the vegetation dynamics in 11,235 urban areas worldwide, identify the driving factors behind its changes, and estimate the potential urban heat mitigation benefits of these changes.

Parent-child relationship and junior high academic performance: Differentiated impacts of fathers and mothers with self - efficacy as a mediator.

This study aimed to address the overlooked differences in the effects of father-child and mother-child relationships on junior high school students' academic performance. Utilizing data from the China Education Panel Survey, it explored these relationships' impacts on overall and subject-specific academic achievements and the mediating role of self-efficacy. Findings revealed both relationships had positive effects, with the mother-child relationship being more prominent.

Wildlife policy, the food system and One Health: a complex systems analysis of unintended consequences for the prevention of emerging zoonoses in China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Philippines.

Introduction: Evolving human-wildlife interactions have contributed to emerging zoonoses outbreaks, and pandemic prevention policy for wildlife management and conservation requires enhanced consideration from this perspective. However, the risk of unintended consequences is high. In this study, we aimed to assess how unrecognised complexity and system adaptation can lead to policy failure, and how these dynamics may impact zoonotic spillover risk and food system outcomes.

Mapping the Landscape of Digital Health Intervention Strategies: 25-Year Synthesis.

Background: Digital health interventions have emerged as promising tools to promote health behavior change and improve health outcomes. However, a comprehensive synthesis of strategies contributing to these interventions is lacking.

Objective: This study aims to (1) identify and categorize the strategies used in digital health interventions over the past 25 years; (2) explore the differences and changes in these strategies across time periods, countries, populations, delivery methods, and senders; and (3) serve as a valuable reference for future researchers and practitioners to improve the effectiveness of digital health interventions.

Brain dynamics and personality: a preliminary study.

Personality can be considered a system characterized by complex dynamics that are extremely adaptive depending on continuous interactions with the environment and situations. The present preliminary study explores the dynamic interplay between brain flexibility and personality by taking the dynamic approach to personality into account, thereby drawing from Cloninger's psychobiological model. 46 healthy individuals were recruited, and their brain dynamics were assessed using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during the resting state.

Does famine during the fetal period increase the degree of disability of the elderly?-An empirical study based on data from China.

Background: People who have experienced the Chinese Great Famine (1959-1961) in their fetal period are getting old. It is particularly important for China's response to the ageing of this cohort to study the impact of the Holodomor on disability.

Method: This paper presents an empirical analysis that utilizes the survey data from the 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), employing a cohort Difference-in-Differences (DID) modeling approach.

Can ICT investment promote green development? new insights from highly polluting listed enterprises in China.

Green development is related to the long-term sustainable development of enterprises, but there is little literature on the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) investment on green development of enterprises. To fill this gap, based on the sample of A-share high-polluting industry enterprises in China's Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets from 2007 to 2019, this paper uses the dynamic panel threshold model to deeply study the non-linear impact of ICT investment on green development. This paper found that: (1) there is a threshold effect on the impact of ICT investment on green development of enterprises in high-polluting industries, and when ICT investment breaks through the threshold value, it can promote green development.

Winter-spring droughts exacerbated PM-O compound pollution? Evidence from China.

With the impact of global climate change, drought events are becoming more frequent, making it critically important to quantitatively evaluate the effects of these events on air pollution. This study uses the augmented synthetic control method and the mediation effect model to quantitatively evaluate the impact effect of the winter-spring drought of 2023 on PM-O compound pollution and its driving factors with Chinese prefecture-level city data. This study indicates that: firstly, compared to non-drought periods, both the monthly averaged and diurnal variations pattern of PM and O significantly increased during drought periods.

Environmental regulation and corporate exports: Quasi-experimental evidence from China's environmental protection tax law.

How can we create a dual benefit scenario that improves both the ecological environment and export performance? This study aims to investigate whether the introduction of the Environmental Protection Tax Law (EPTL) has promoted the growth of corporate export. By treating the formal implementation of China's EPTL on January 1, 2018, as an exogenous economic event, this paper takes A-share listed companies in China from 2013 to 2022 as a sample and uses the Difference-in-Differences (DID) model to analyze the specific effects of the EPTL on corporate exports. The results indicate that the EPTL improves corporate exports significantly.

The Ghanaian banking sector, grappling with a spectrum of financial risks, presents a compelling case study for understanding the dynamics of risk and profitability in emerging markets. This study seeks to fortify the financial performance of Ghanaian banks through an innovative application of benchmark regression analysis, focusing on critical financial risk and performance metrics. Employing an explanatory research methodology, we harnessed a panel regression model to scrutinize secondary data extracted from the annual income statements of 23 banks, spanning nearly two decades from 2006 to 2023.

Reconstruction of super-resolution from high-resolution remote sensing images based on convolutional neural networks.

In this study, a novel algorithm named the Edge-enhanced Generative Adversarial Network (EGAN) is proposed to address the issues of noise corruption and edge fuzziness in the super-resolution of remote sensing images. To build upon the baseline model called Deep Blind Super-Resolution GAN (DBSR-GAN), an edge enhancement module is introduced to enhance the edge information of the images. To enlarge the receptive field of the algorithm, the Mask branch within the edge enhancement structure is further optimized.

How the environmental credit evaluation system affects corporate pollution emissions: Evidence from China.

The environmental credit evaluation system (ECES), which integrates control, market, and contractual elements as a novel comprehensive environmental regulation tool, has been piloted in China since the late 1990s. The effectiveness of this system in improving environmental conditions and the mechanisms through which it operates have attracted significant attention. This study utilizes the pilot implementation of the ECES as a quasi-natural experiment, integrating data from Chinese industrial firms and pollution statistics from 2003 to 2014.

Does environmental information disclosure promote enterprise green technology innovation?

Accelerating green technology innovation is essential for promoting economic transformation and achieving sustainable development. Environmental information disclosure (EID) at the city level, as a crucial component of the environmental governance system, provides new opportunities to drive enterprise green technology innovation. This study utilizes the Pollution Source Supervision Information Disclosure Index (PITI), implemented in China since 2008, as a quasi-natural experiment for EID.

Environmental regulation and mental well-being: Evidence from China's air pollution prevention and control action plan.

This study investigates how enhanced environmental regulation can improve individuals' mental well-being, focusing on the impact of China's so far most stringent air pollution control policy, the 2013 Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP). Exploiting variations in timing and regions of the implementation of the policy, we find that the APPCAP has significantly improved people's mental well-being. We test several potential socio-economic channels including reduced air pollution, enhanced environmental awareness, improved physical health, and decreased physical activities during periods of heavy pollution, through which environmental regulation may affect mental well-being.

Does living longer mean living healthier? A comprehensive analysis of 204 countries and regions from 1990 to 2019.

Background: The data from the WHO showed that life expectancy (LE) and health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) at global level both increased from 2000 to 2019, while they did not increase at the same rate. Therefore, our study aims to explore the relationship and changing trends between LE and HALE, and further comprehensively analyze the factors influencing the difference between the two.

Methods: This paper uses data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database in LE and HALE across 204 countries and regions from 1990 to 2019.

Are enterprises embedding in digital platform ecosystems greener? A resource curse view.

Achieving the global climate mitigation goals requires corporate green innovation, especially substantive green innovation, to address the resource constraints. In this paper, we analyze the impact of the depth of enterprise embeddedness in digital platform ecosystems (DPEs) on substantive green innovation of enterprises. Previous research findings suggest that enterprises' involvement in DPEs can overcome the resource constraints and increase resource accumulation required for the substantive green innovation of enterprises.
