Despite well-documented metabolic and hematopoietic alterations during tumor development, the mechanisms underlying this crucial immunometabolic intersection remain elusive. Of particular interest is the connection between lipid metabolism and the retinoic-acid-related orphan receptor (RORC1/RORγ), whose transcriptional activity modulates cancer-related emergency myelopoiesis and is boosted by cholesterol metabolites, while hypercholesterolemia itself is associated with dysregulated myelopoiesis. Here, we show that cancer and hypercholesterolemic diet independently or cooperatively activate RORγ-dependent expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and M2-polarized tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), supporting cancer spread.

Methods: This study aimed to produce a quantitative comparison of the behavior, nutrition habits, and gut microbiota composition between the onset and the 1-year follow-up in 35 children with T1D.

Although light is essential for photosynthesis, when in excess, it may damage the photosynthetic apparatus, leading to a phenomenon known as photoinhibition. Photoinhibition was thought as a light-induced damage to photosystem II; however, it is now clear that even photosystem I may become very vulnerable to light. One main characteristic of light induced damage to photosystem II (PSII) is the increased turnover of the reaction center protein, D1: when rate of degradation exceeds the rate of synthesis, loss of PSII activity is observed.
