Introduction: Visual assessment and imaging of the donor liver are inaccurate in predicting fibrosis and remain surrogates for histopathology. We demonstrate that 3-s scans using a handheld near-infrared-spectroscopy (NIRS) instrument can identify and quantify fibrosis in fresh human liver samples.
Methods: We undertook NIRS scans on 107 samples from 27 patients, 88 from 23 patients with liver disease, and 19 from four organ donors.

Design/methodology/approach: The research material comprised reflective essays written by fifth-year dental students who had participated in a leadership course. The essays were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Background Childhood exposure to dyslipidemia is associated with adult atherosclerosis, but it is unclear whether the long-term risk associated with dyslipidemia is attenuated on its resolution by adulthood. We aimed to address this question by examining the links between childhood and adult dyslipidemia on carotid atherosclerotic plaques in adulthood. Methods and Results The Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study is a prospective follow-up of children that began in 1980.

Coniferous wood resins ("callus" resin) are a mixture of abietic (resin) acids, lignans such as pinoresinol, and -coumaric acid. The wound-healing properties of resins are thought to be related to their antimicrobial properties, but also to their effects on cell proliferation and inflammation.

Plant stress in a changing climate is predicted to increase plant volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and thus can affect the formed secondary organic aerosol (SOA) concentrations, which in turn affect the radiative properties of clouds and aerosol. However, global aerosol-climate models do not usually consider plant stress induced VOCs in their emission schemes. In this study, we modified the monoterpene emission factors in biogenic emission model to simulate biotic stress caused by insect herbivory on needleleaf evergreen boreal and broadleaf deciduous boreal trees and studied the consequent effects on SOA formation, aerosol-cloud interactions as well as direct radiative effects of formed SOA.

Introduction: It is important to understand which biological processes change with aging, and how such changes are associated with increased Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. We studied how cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteomics changed with age and tested if associations depended on amyloid status, sex, and apolipoprotein E Ɛ4 genotype.
Methods: We included 277 cognitively intact individuals aged 46 to 89 years from Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, European Medical Information Framework for Alzheimer's Disease Multimodal Biomarker Discovery, and Metabolic Syndrome in Men.
Introduction: There are no published data on prospective clinical studies on drug treatment options for sleep-related epileptiform spiking in Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods: Using video-EEG with hippocampal electrodes in 17 APP/PS1 transgenic male mice we assessed the effects of donepezil and memantine, anti-seizure drugs levetiracetam and lamotrigine, gamma-secretase inhibitor semagacestat, anti-inflammatory minocycline and adenosine receptor antagonist istradephylline on density of cortical and hippocampal spikes during sleep.
Results: Levetiracetam decreased the density of hippocampal giant spikes and cortical spikes.

Frailty is a multisystemic process leading to reduction of physiological reserve and a reduction in physical activity. Heart failure (HF) is recognised as a global cause of morbidity and mortality, increasing in prevalence over recent decades. Because of shared phenotypes and comorbidities, there is significant overlap and a bidirectional relationship, with frail patients being at increased risk of developing HF and vice versa.

Fatigue fractures in bones are common injuries with load-bearing activities, during which the remodeling aimed at removing microdamage has been suggested to play a role in increasing related fracture risk. Much attention has been given to the uncoupling between osteoclastic bone resorption and osteoblastic osteogenesis in fatigue fracture cases; however, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms of impaired fracture healing are yet unknown. Here we report multiple fatigue fractures in a physically active woman receiving contraceptive pills for years.

The aim of this cohort study was to evaluate the risk of asthma in young adulthood after hospitalization for viral wheezing episodes in early childhood.
Methods: The original cohort comprised 100 individuals aged <24 months who were hospitalized for viral wheezing episodes in 1992-1993.
Background Mechanisms mediating hypertensive effects of overweight and obesity have not been fully elucidated. We showed previously that activation of pregnane X receptor (PXR) by rifampicin elevates 24-hour blood pressure (BP) and plasma 4β-hydroxycholesterol (4βHC), agonist for liver X receptor (LXR). Methods and Results In combined "PXR activation data set" (n=62) of 4 clinical trials, 1 week rifampicin dosing increased office systolic BP (SBP) by 3.
