PA experiences in clinical trials.

JAAPA

August 2024

Alice Eggleston is a clinical research investigator at AllianceChicago in Chicago, Ill. Eleanor Sarkodie is a research data analyst at the Whitman-Walker Institute in Washington, D.C. Rachel Rokser is clinical coordinator and an assistant professor in the PA program at the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa. This project was funded by an award from the AAPA-PAEA Research Fellowship. The authors have disclosed no potential conflicts of interest, financial or otherwise.

Objective: Physician associate/assistant (PA) experience in clinical trials is poorly documented in medical literature. This survey aimed to describe the characteristics and experiences of PAs in clinical trial research.

Methods: We performed descriptive analyses of data gathered in 2022 by the American Academy of Physician Associates and published in the organization's annual Salary Report, specifically of respondents who indicated experience in traditional and/or decentralized clinical trials.

The present survey research investigated older people's volunteering competency relating to social inequality by exploring the latent ability profile and demographic correlates of 1,000 older volunteers in 73 community care centersin southern Taiwan. Older volunteers were classified into advanced (n = 509), basic (n = 214), and novice (n = 277) groups. Demographics examined included: individualistic characteristics (religious beliefs), resources (education; number of chronic diseases), andsocial factors (serving area and spoken language, volunteering duration, marital status, and gender).

Acupoint-stimulating therapies have often been used to manage stroke-related spasticity and motor dysfunction. However, the effects of different acupoint-stimulating therapies in older stroke survivors have been unclear. This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared the effects of different acupoint-stimulating therapies in managing spasticity and motor dysfunction in older stroke survivors.

Case studies present students with an opportunity to learn and apply course content through problem solving and critical thinking. Supported by the High-throughput Discovery Science & Inquiry-based Case Studies for Today's Students (HITS) Research Coordination Network, our interdisciplinary team designed, implemented, and assessed two case study modules entitled "You Are What You Eat." Collectively, the case study modules present students with an opportunity to engage in experimental research design and the ethical considerations regarding microbiome research and society.

Over the last several years, nationally disseminated course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have emerged as an alternative to developing a novel CURE from scratch, but objective assessment of these multi-institution (network) CUREs across institutions is challenging due to differences in student populations, instructors, and fidelity of implementation. The time, money, and skills required to develop and validate a CURE-specific assessment instrument can be prohibitive. Here, we describe a co-design process for assessing a network CURE [the Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment (PARE)] that did not require support through external funding, was a relatively low time commitment for participating instructors, and resulted in a validated instrument that is usable across diverse PARE network institution types and implementation styles.

Older age is associated with reduced social networks while social skill abilities are important assets for older people to cope with these situations. To better understand older people's social skill ability and important demographic correlates, the present cross-sectional survey research interviewed 1000 Taiwanese older volunteers from 73 community care centers. Findings of a mixed model indicated that education and serving area outweighed other demographic factors significantly correlated with older volunteers' social skill ability.

Introduction: Mind-body exercises (MBEs) were shown to be effective in managing chronic pain among older adults in several recent studies. However, the differences in the effects of different MBEs remained unclear.

Objective: To compare the effects of different MBEs in managing chronic pain in older adults.

Sleep disturbances, which are common problems in older adults, often lead to cognitive decline and depression and may even increase mortality risk. Foot thermal therapy is a simple and safe approach for improving sleep and is associated with relatively few side effects. However, the effect of different operations of foot thermal therapy on sleep quality in older adults is inconclusive.

Objective: To assess and compare the effects of different stretching exercise programs on pain, stiffness, and physical function disability in older adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA).

Data Sources: This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline for network meta-analysis (NMA). Relevant randomized controlled trials were identified by searching 7 databases up to December 2022.

This systematic review synthesized findings on socio-demographic characteristics of older adults who engaged in formal volunteering, types of voluntary work for engagement, and the outcomes resulting from different types of voluntary work participation. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals were identified from six electronic databases. Studies were included if they: (1) involved a study sample of adults aged 65 and older or had a mean age of 65 , (2) reported any type of formal voluntary work at any setting, and (3) reported at least one influence of voluntary work on volunteers.

Immune literacy-the ability to hear, learn, read, write, explain, and discuss immunological content with varied audiences-has become critically important in recent years. Yet, with its complex terminology and discipline-specific concepts, educating individuals about the immune system and its role in health and disease may seem daunting. Here, we reflect on how to demystify the discipline and increase its accessibility for a broader audience.

Even before coverage and updates on COVID-19 became a daily event in mainstream news, mass media was already full of science-focused current events stories. While relevant to our everyday lives, many popular press science articles overstate conclusions, misstate details or, at worst, purposefully spread disinformation. This iterative news analysis and writing intervention was designed to increase the visibility of real-world applications of microbiology in current events (including and beyond the 2019 coronavirus disease [COVID-19] pandemic), thereby engaging students and cultivating motivation through a positive perception of course content in accordance with expectancy-value theory.

One of the most fatal infectious diseases, malaria, still poses a threat to about half of the world's population and is the leading cause of death worldwide. The use of artemisinin-based combination therapy has helped to significantly reduce the number of deaths caused by malaria, but the emergence of drug resistance threatens to undo this gain. In a bid to boost adherence, several new combination therapies with effectiveness against drug-resistant parasites are currently being tested in clinical settings.

The Genomics Education Partnership (GEP) engages students in a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE). To better understand the student attributes that support success in this CURE, we asked students about their attitudes using previously published scales that measure epistemic beliefs about work and science, interest in science, and grit. We found, in general, that the attitudes students bring with them into the classroom contribute to two outcome measures, namely, learning as assessed by a pre- and postquiz and perceived self-reported benefits.

The need to focus on immunology education has never been greater. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has revealed that a significant proportion of our society is vaccine hesitant. Some of this hesitancy may stem from a general lack of understanding of how the immune system and immunological interventions work.

Isatin, chemically an indole-1-2,3-dione, is recognised as one of the most attractive therapeutic fragments in drug design and development. The template has turned out to be exceptionally useful for developing new anticancer scaffolds, as evidenced by the increasing number of isatin-based molecules which are either in clinical use or in trials. Apart from its promising antiproliferative properties, isatin has shown potential in treating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) not only as a parent core, but also by attenuating the activities of various pharmacophores.
