Characterization and typology of guinea pig breeding in the Department of Menoua-Western Region, Cameroon.

Trop Anim Health Prod

November 2023

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Management of Animal Resources, Animal Nutrition in Tropical Environments, University of Liege-Belgium, Quartier Vallée 2 Avenue de Cureghem 10, 4000, Liege1, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • * Three distinct types of breeders were identified based on herd size and breeding practices, with most housing being traditional and free-ranging, and nutrition primarily from fodders and food scraps.
  • * Health challenges like disease and predation were significant issues, yet guinea pig breeding served as an important income source for households, suggesting potential improvements in techniques and the formation of economic groups could enhance food security.

Background: Routine immunisation coverage in Cameroon is still below the target of the national Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), with only 42% of children fully immunised according to Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) report in 2018. The objective of this study was to evaluate factors associated with full immunisation and zero-dose in Cameroonian children.

Methods: A two-stage cross-sectional cluster survey was conducted in Yaoundé in November 2021, targeting children aged 12-59 months.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study investigates how different SiO/AlO ratios in amorphous zeolites ZSM5 affect the electrochemical performance of cobalt oxide-loaded composites.
  • * Results indicate that higher SiO/AlO ratios lead to better specific capacity and electrochemical performance, suggesting that optimizing this ratio is essential for creating effective supercapacitors.

Reducing mortality among COVID-19 cases is a major challenge for most health systems worldwide. Estimating the risk of preexisting comorbidities on COVID-19 mortality may promote the importance of targeting at-risk populations to improve survival through primary and secondary prevention. This study was conducted to explore the contribution of exposure to some chronic diseases on the mortality of COVID-19.

The burden of vaccine hesitancy for routine immunization in Yaounde-Cameroon: A cross-sectional study.

PLOS Glob Public Health

September 2022

Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Medical and Health sciences, Kesmonds International University, Bamenda, Cameroon.

Article Synopsis
  • Immunization is highly cost-effective, yet less than 50% of children in Cameroon were fully vaccinated by 2018, prompting a study on vaccine hesitancy in Yaoundé, Cameroon.
  • A survey of 529 parents/guardians revealed a high rate of vaccine hesitancy (25.9%), with the oral polio vaccine being the most affected (10%).
  • Factors such as household wealth did not significantly influence vaccine hesitancy, with lack of trust identified as the primary reason for vaccine refusal (43%).

hydro-ethanolic leaf extract (PHELE) and bark extract (PHEBE) were evaluated for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and inhibition of digestive enzymes activities. The antioxidant activity was characterized by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) assays. The anti-inflammatory activity was characterized by protein denaturation and antiproteinase tests, while the inhibition of the enzymes was assessed using -amylase, -glucosidase, lipase, and cholesterol esterase activities.

Modeling, simulation and optimization of solid fuel bread ovens commonly used in developing countries.

Heliyon

February 2021

LaMSEBP: Laboratory of Modelling and Simulation in Engineering, Biomimetic and Prototypes, Department of Physic, University of Yaoundé 1, Po Box 812, Yaoundé Cameroon.

In this work, we propose a mathematical model describing thermal behavior and heating process optimization of solid fuel bread ovens. Numerical simulation leads to temperature profiles of the oven. The design and implementation of an operating prototype permits us to obtain, with type K thermocouples, experimental temperature profiles in some points of the oven.
