Circulatory Indicators of Lipid Peroxidation, the Driver of Ferroptosis, Reflect Differences between Relapsing-Remitting and Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Int J Mol Sci

October 2024

Laboratory for Radiobiology and Molecular Genetics, VINČA Institute of Nuclear Sciences-National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, P.O. Box 522, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia.

Ferroptosis, a lipid peroxidation- and iron-mediated type of regulated cell death, relates to both neuroinflammation, which is common in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), and neurodegeneration, which is prevalent in progressive (P)MS. Currently, findings related to the molecular markers proposed in this paper in patients are scarce. We analyzed circulatory molecular indicators of the main ferroptosis-related processes, comprising lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde (MDA), 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), and hexanoyl-lysine adduct (HEL)), glutathione-related antioxidant defense (total glutathione (reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG)) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4)), and iron metabolism (iron, transferrin and ferritin) to estimate their contributions to the clinical manifestation of MS and differences between RRMS and PMS disease course.

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) in laryngeal cancer (LC) patients significantly increases morbidity and may postpone adjuvant therapy. Additionally, SSI can prolong hospitalization, thus representing a burden for the healthcare system. Most of the published studies refer to SSI after salvage laryngectomy.

Highly porous bioceramic scaffolds are widely used as bone substitutes in many applications. However, the use of bioceramics is often limited to hard tissues due to the risk of potential soft tissue calcification. A further limitation of highly porous bioceramic scaffolds is their poor mechanical stability, manifested by their tendency to break under stress.

  • Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder often leading to end-stage renal disease, and this study reviews native nephrectomy (NN) practices over 25 years at a transplant center.
  • A total of 89 out of 152 ADPKD patients who underwent kidney transplantation (KT) also had NN, with most NN being unilateral and planned surgeries showing better outcomes than acute ones.
  • The findings highlight the importance of careful planning and patient-specific strategies in NN for ADPKD due to increased complications associated with acute surgeries.

Article Synopsis
  • Diazepam has been the main treatment for seizures caused by toxic nerve agents since the 1960s, but its limitations have raised concerns, leading to research on alternative medications.
  • Two significant alternatives that have advanced in clinical use are Avizafone and intramuscular midazolam, the latter recently approved by the FDA, offering benefits like rapid action and better solubility.
  • While midazolam shows promise as a more effective treatment for poisoned casualties, its sedative effects pose challenges in determining the right dosage for soldiers in combat situations.

  • Researchers studied strokes from 1990 to 2021 to understand how many people get them and how they are affected around the world.
  • In 2021, strokes caused about 7.3 million deaths and were a major cause of health problems, especially in specific regions like Southeast Asia and Oceania.
  • There are differences in stroke risks based on where people live and their age, and some areas actually saw more strokes happening since 2015.

In this research is presented a new method for determining the weights of criteria called simple weight calculation (SIWEC) method. The steps of this method are presented in the practical example of determining the importance of criteria for the needs of sales of agricultural products in the Semberija region. During the presentation of this method two methods are elaborated the simple SIWEC method which includes numerical ratings and the fuzzy SIWEC method which includes ratings in the form of linguistic value.

Introduction: Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are derived by reprogramming adult somatic cells using a forced expression of four specific transcription factors in a highly controlled artificial environment. The aim of this paper is to examine the knowledge about these cells of the general population and the population of health workers in relation to gender.

Methods: The research was designed as a cohort study conducted with a validated questionnaire to assess knowledge about iPSCs.

Influence of Process Parameters on Selected Properties of Ti6Al4V Manufacturing via L-PBF Process.

Materials (Basel)

September 2024

Institute of Robots & Machine Design, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Military University of Technology, Gen. S. Kaliskiego St., 00-908 Warsaw, Poland.

This study investigates the microstructural effects of process parameters on Ti6Al4V alloy produced via powder bed fusion (PBF) using laser beam melting (LB/M) technology. The research focuses on how variations in laser power, exposure velocity, and hatching distance influence the final material's porosity, microhardness, and microstructure. To better understand the relationships between process parameters, energy density, and porosity, a simple mathematical model was developed.

Radiation Signature in Plasma Metabolome of Total-Body Irradiated Nonhuman Primates and Clinical Patients.

Int J Mol Sci

August 2024

Division of Radioprotectants, Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Therapeutics, F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD 20814, USA.

In the last decade, geopolitical instability across the globe has increased the risk of a large-scale radiological event, when radiation biomarkers would be needed for an effective triage of an irradiated population. Ionizing radiation elicits a complex response in the proteome, genome, and metabolome and hence can be leveraged as rapid and sensitive indicators of irradiation-induced damage. We analyzed the plasma of total-body irradiated (TBI) leukemia patients (n = 24) and nonhuman primates (NHPs; n = 10) before and 24 h after irradiation, and we performed a global metabolomic study aiming to provide plasma metabolites as candidate radiation biomarkers for biological dosimetry.

A colour sensor integrated into a microcontroller platform as a reliable tool for measuring pH changes in biochemistry applications.

Anal Methods

October 2024

Department of Molecular Pathology and Biology, Military Faculty of Medicine, University of Defence, Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

Colorimetry is a widely used technique for optical detection in point-of-care testing and on-site detection. Although some studies employ a multiplex approach to analyse coloured solutions, many still analyse one sample at a time. We have prepared a simple and affordable colorimetric assay based on a TCS34725 colour sensor (ams-OSRAM) integrated into an M5Stack module and an RGB LED module both inserted into a 3D printed frame.

Background: The optimal radiotherapy technique for cardiac sparing in left-sided early breast cancer (EBC) is not clear. In this context, the aim of our dosimetric study was to compare cardiac and lung doses according to the type of radiotherapy - whole breast irradiation (WBI), external partial breast irradiation (PBI), and multicatheter interstitial brachytherapy-accelerated partial breast irradiation (MIB-APBI). The dosimetric results with the WBI and PBI were calculated with and without DIBH.

  • Prehabilitation is a program that helps patients get ready for surgery using exercise, nutrition, and mental support to improve their recovery.
  • A study looked at 23 articles involving 1,849 older patients to see how well these programs worked before major surgeries.
  • The results showed that most patients liked prehabilitation and did well in following the program, which also helped them walk better after surgery, although it didn't significantly lower complications.
