Background/objectives: Spinal metastases are a frequent and serious complication in cancer patients, often causing severe pain, instability, and neurological deficits. Thermal ablation techniques such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and cryoablation (CA) have emerged as minimally invasive treatments. These techniques rely on precise imaging guidance to effectively target lesions while minimizing complications.

Anisogamy and sex roles: a commentary.

Evol Lett

December 2024

Department of Life Sciences, Milner Centre for Evolution, University of Bath, Bath BA2 7AY, United Kingdom.

The origin and maintenance of sex differences in reproductive behavior (often labeled sex roles) have remained controversial topics, and recent meta-analyses and theoretical models have helped to elucidate the processes that generate diverse sex roles. We are glad to see that our study (Mokos et al., 2021) generated a healthy debate, and in agreement with recent commentaries (Janicke, 2024; Lehtonen & Parker, 2024) we call for a more comprehensive approach to understanding sex role evolution.

Int J Prison Health (2024)

December 2024

the Institute of Educational Studies and Cultural Management, University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of physical activity in prisons, its link to mental health and the potential for desistance bringing the perspective of two Eastern European countries - Czechia and Hungary. The paper aims to show that sport in prison has to be seriously considered as an activity that has the potential to positively contribute to the physical and mental health of prison inmates. The aim of the paper is to show that sport in prison is a very potential rehabilitative tool.

Consumers have several options when confronted with less environmentally friendly packaging like water in single use plastic bottles - they can ignore environmental concerns and proceed with a purchase, refuse to buy any such product, seek out a less damaging version like water in biodegradable bottles, and/or engage in offsetting/compensatory behavior such as donating to a charity. Understanding how consumers value these options is an important academic and management challenge. To address this, a stated choice experiment is employed.

Introduction: To address the cervical cancer burden globally, the World Health Organization and European Union released strategies to facilitate HPV-related cancers prevention, including cervical cancer elimination. This research assessed European country level readiness to achieve cervical cancer elimination by adhering to such strategies.

Areas Covered: Readiness for cervical cancer elimination was assessed across a range of guiding questions relevant to three defined key domains: vaccination, screening, and treatment, each with two sub-domains focusing on decision making and implementation efforts.

Effect of Mo and W underlayers on ordered phase formation in Fe-Au-Pd multilayer thin films at low temperatures.

Heliyon

June 2024

Department of Solid State Physics, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Debrecen, P.O. Box 400, H-4002, Debrecen, Hungary.

Fe-Pd based thin films with Au intermediate layer fabricated on different substrates (SiO, SiO/Mo, SiO/W) were investigated at annealing temperatures up to 460 °C. The samples were deposited by magnetron sputtering and were post-annealed in vacuum. The ongoing processes were investigated by chemical depth profiling and X-ray diffraction.

Objective: Aim: Assessment of dental caries and its impact on the level of dental health of children aged 15-18 years of Upper Tysa region, who constantly live in conditions of combined negative effects of factors of natural and technological genesis.

Patients And Methods: Materials and Methods: During the dental examination, the incidence of dental caries in 360 children aged 15-18 years from various biogeochemical zones of the cross-border region of the Upper Tysa region was studied and assessed using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System - ICDAS II (International Caries Detection and Assessment System).

Results: Results: It was found that the use of physiologically suboptimal drinking water from decentralized water resources is among the environmental determinants of the state of dental health of children in the Upper Potyssia.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a leading cause for referral to genetic services, with the most severe cases typically attributed to single genetic defects. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic yield of cost-effective proband-only exome sequencing for individuals diagnosed with ID within the Iranian population for the first time where a high rate of parental consanguinity exists. A total of 99 unrelated patients with ID were investigated by exome sequencing during 8 years.

Article Synopsis
  • The CMS experiment conducted a search for charge-parity violation in decays using proton-proton collision data from 2018, analyzing around 10 billion events with b hadrons decaying into charm hadrons.
  • The flavor of the neutral D meson was determined through the charge of pions in the reconstructed decays, and an asymmetry measurement in the decays was reported, taking into account various uncertainties.
  • This research marks the first asymmetry measurement by the CMS in the charm sector and the first to use a fully hadronic final state in such analyses.

Could the transcription factor AtnN coordinating the aspercryptin secondary metabolite gene cluster in Aspergillus nidulans be a global regulator?

Fungal Biol

December 2024

Department of Molecular Biotechnology and Microbiology, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Debrecen, Hungary; HUN-REN-DE Fungal Stress Biology Research Group, Debrecen, Hungary. Electronic address:

Products of dormant secondary metabolite gene clusters of fungal genomes can be exploited for medical purposes as bioactive agents. These clusters can be switched on under oxidative stress and may endow fungi with a versatile chemical armory in a competitive niche. In Aspergillus nidulans, the aspercryptin gene cluster, including the synthase [atnA (AN7884)] and its transcription factor (atnN), was activated under menadione sodium bisulfite (MSB) treatment.

Communicative health literacy and associated variables in nine European countries: results from the HLS survey.

Sci Rep

December 2024

INSERM, IRD, ISSPAM, SESSTIM, Cancer, Biomedicine & Society Group, Ligue 2019 Accredited Team, Aix Marseille Univ, 13009, Marseille, France.

Our study aimed to report on variables associated with communicative health literacy (COM-HL) in European adults. The HLS survey was conducted in 2019-2021 including nine countries which measured COM-HL by using a validated questionnaire (HLS-COM-P-Q6 with a score ranging from 0 to 100). Linear regression models were used to study variables associated with COM-HL globally (multilevel model with random intercepts and slopes and at country level) and in each country.

The NanoPlasmonic Laser Induced Fusion Energy (NAPLIFE) project proposed fusion by regulating the laser light absorption via resonant nanorod antennas implanted into hydrogen rich urethane acrylate methacrylate (UDMA) and triethylene glycol dimethylacrylate (TEGDMA) copolymer targets. In part of the tests, boron-nitride (BN) was added to the polymer. Our experiments with resonant nanoantennas accelerated protons up to 225 keV energy.

  • The study focuses on detecting multijet signatures from proton-proton collisions at a high energy of 13 TeV, analyzing a dataset totaling 128 fb^{-1}.
  • A special data scouting method is utilized to pick out events with low combined momentum in jets.
  • This research is pioneering in its investigation of electroweak particle production in R-parity violating supersymmetric models, particularly examining hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and it broadens the limits on the existence of R-parity violating top squarks and gluinos.
