Taking into account that in recent decades there has been an increase in the incidence of urinary stones, especially in highly developed countries, from a wide range of potentially harmful substances commonly available in such countries, we chose zinc for the research presented in this article, which is classified by some sources as a heavy metal. In this article, we present the results of research on the influence of Zn2+ ion on the nucleation and growth of struvite crystals-the main component of infection urinary stones. The tests were carried out in an artificial urine environment with and without the presence of Proteus mirabilis bacteria.

The promising class of the environment-friendly thermoelectrics is the copper-based argyrodite-type ion-conducting crystals exhibiting just extraordinary low thermal conductivity below the glass limit associated with the molten copper sublattice leading to a softening of phonon modes. To explain why the argyrodite structure containing copper ions favors the low thermal conductivity, we have utilized the ab initio calculations of the electron, phonon, and thermoelectric properties of CuPS crystal in the framework of the density functional and Boltzmann transport theories. To obtain the reliable thermoelectric properties of CuPS, we take into account the dependence of the electron effective mass m on the redundant carrier concentration n.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a public health emergency concern and a challenge to students' mental health due to changes in education and social isolation. This paper proposes the simulated and experimental results of a universal filter using the voltage differencing differential difference amplifier (VDDDA). Unlike the previous complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) structures of VDDDA that is present in the literature, the present one is compact and simple, owing to the employment of the multiple-input metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistor technique. The presented filter employs two VDDDAs, one resistor and two grounded capacitors, and it offers low-pass: LP, band-pass: BP, band-reject: BR, high-pass: HP and all-pass: AP responses with a unity passband voltage gain.

The paper presents the Rr matrix form of Kedem-Katchalsky-Peusner equations for membrane transport of the non-homogeneous ternary non-electrolyte solutions. Peusner's coefficients Rijr and [Rr] (, ∈ {1, 2, 3}, = A, B) occurring in these equations, were calculated for Nephrophan biomembrane, glucose in aqueous ethanol solutions and two different settings of the solutions relative to the horizontally oriented membrane for concentration polarization conditions or homogeneity of solutions. Kedem-Katchalsky coefficients, measured for homogeneous and non-homogeneous solutions, were used for the calculations.

Cellulose-triacetate-based polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) with different concentrations of a calixpyrrole ester derivative as the membrane carrier were studied to determine their ability to transport Ag(I) from aqueous nitrate solutions. The effects of the concentrations of ion carriers and metal ions, the pH of the source aqueous phase, and stripping agents on the effective transport of Ag(I) were assessed. All studied parameters were found to be important factors for the transport of Ag(I) metal ions.

Background: Using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), microstructural changes in commercial dental restorative composites under light-curing polymerization were identified as a modification in mixed positron/Ps trapping, where the decay of positronium (Ps; the bound state of positrons and electrons) is caused by free-volume holes mainly in the polymer matrix, and positron trapping is defined by interfacial free-volume holes in a mixed filler-polymer environment. This paper discusses the results of studies on the transport of Ag(i) across polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs), derivatives of calixpyrroles with methyl (KP1) and carboxyl (KP2) groups, as ion carriers, -nitrophenyl pentyl ether (-NPPE) as a plasticizer and cellulose triacetate (CTA) as support. The influence of the pH of the source phase, metal concentration, stripping phase as well as carrier and plasticizer concentration on the efficiency of Ag(i) transport through PIM is presented. Long-term experiments with a supported liquid membrane and a plasticizer membrane demonstrate the durability of the studied PIMs.

Network-forming As(S/Se) nanoclusters are employed to recognize expected variations in a vicinity of some remarkable compositions in binary As-Se/S glassy systems accepted as signatures of optimally constrained intermediate topological phases in earlier temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The ab initio quantum chemical calculations performed using the cation-interlinking network cluster approach show similar oscillating character in tendency to local chemical decomposition but obvious step-like behavior in preference to global phase separation on boundary chemical compounds (pure chalcogen and stoichiometric arsenic chalcogenides). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the concept of the MBJ+U+SO (modified Becke-Johnson potential + U + spin orbit) approach were performed for a TlHgBr single crystal for the first time assuming weak noncentrosymmetry (space group P4nc). Excellent agreement was achieved between the calculated and experimental band-gap-energy magnitudes as well as the density of electronic states measured by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method. It is a very principal result because usually the DFT calculations underestimate the energy-gap values.
