The objective of this study was to describe the main lesions that simulate clinically and propose a treatment protocol for acute endodontic infection. Signs and clinical symptoms of periodontal abscess, gingival abscess, odontoma, herpes simplex, pericoronitis, acute pulpitis and necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis/periodontitis (NUG/NUP) were described and compared with acute endodontic infections. A treatment protocol was described by optimizing the procedures in access cavity, microbial decontamination and detoxification of the root canal, apical debridement, intracanal and systemic medication and surgical drainage procedures.

Professor, Department of Postgraduate Program in Dentistry, School of Dentistry, CEUMA University, Rua Jossue Montello, 01, Renascenca, CEP 65075-120, Sao Luis, MA Brazil, e-mail:

Aim: To evaluate the effect of 37% carbamide peroxide on the bond strength of conventional or resin-modified glass-ionomer cements when used as a cervical barrier in endodontically-treated teeth.

Materials And Methods: After root canal instrumentation and obturation, 40 specimens of the cement-enamel junction were obtained after transversal root canal sectioning from human extracted canines. The root canal specimens were standardized and filled with the following materials (n = 10, each group): G1: zinc phosphate (control), G2: Ketac glass-ionomer, G3: vitrebond glass-ionomer or G4: GC GL glass-ionomer.

Background: The Calcium Hydroxide has been widely used as an intracanal dressing and in combination with restorative and endodontic materials and its main goal is the tissue reparation. However, when the patient has chronic stress, the immunological response and tissue repair decreases in both the epithelial and connective tissue. Therefore, the aim was to analyze the effect of chronic stress on the tissue response in rats exposed to calcium hydroxide (CH).

Craniofacial defects represent alterations in the anatomy and morphology of the cranial vault and the facial bones that potentially affect an individual's psychological and social well-being. Although a variety of techniques and restorative procedures have been described for the reconstruction of the affected area, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a biocompatible and nondegradable acrylic resin-based implant, is the most widely used alloplastic material for such craniomaxillofacial reconstruction. The aim of this study was to describe a technique for aesthetic and functional preoperative customized reconstruction of craniofacial bone defects from a small series of patients offered by the Brazilian public health system.

Accuracy of perioperative mandibular positions in orthognathic surgery.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sao Paulo - USP, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Mandibular position is an important parameter used for the diagnosis of dentofacial deformities, as well as for orthognathic surgery planning and execution. Centric relation (anterior and superior relationship of the mandibular condyles interposed by the thinnest portion of their disks against the articular eminencies), centric occlusion (when lower teeth contact upper teeth at centric relation), and maximal intercuspation (complete interdigitation of lower and upper teeth) are not often addressed as factors that influence the results of orthognathic surgery, although these relationships are critical to ensure accuracy during the surgery. The present study assessed occlusal measurements taken before and after the induction of general anaesthesia from consecutive orthognathic surgery subjects.

Validation of the gastroschisis experimental model and the influence of the mother's diet enriched with glutamine in the fetal morphology.

Acta Cir Bras

March 2014

UFMT, Department of Surgery, CuiabaMT, Brazil, PhD, Full Professor, Division of Digestive Surgery, Department of Surgery, UFMT, Cuiaba-MT, Brazil. Critical revision.

Purpose: To validate the gastroschisis experimental model in female rats and the effects on the glutamine fetal morphology during pregnancy.

Methods: Twelve pregnant rats Wistar were separated in two groups: Group I (n = 6 rats, 71 fetuses) took glutamine and Group II (n = 6 rats, 75 fetuses) took isocaloric supplementation. At the 18th day of pregnancy, female rats were taken to hysterotomy and the fetuses which were selected for the act of gastroschisis were partially removed from the womb and by the laparotomy technique, the exclusion of the intestine was done.

Rehabilitation of the maxillary arch after bone graft using immediate loading with implant-supported fixed restoration.

Moderate and controlled loading environments support or enhance osteogenesis, and, consequently, a high degree of bone-to-implant contact can be acquired. This is because when osteoprogenitor cells are exposed to limited physical deformation, their differentiation into osteoblasts is enhanced. Then, some range of microstrain is considered advantageous for bone ingrowth and osseointegration.

Purpose: To investigate the effect chronic stress in newborn rats on the progression of ligature-induced-periodontitis in adulthood.

Methods: Ten couples of adult Wistar rats were selected for mating. After birth, the female and their respective offsprings were allocated into two groups.

Instances of unoperated cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) in adult or elderly patients are still seen in developing countries. This paper presents the multidisciplinary management and the personal identity revival of a 72-year-old patient with unoperated unilateral complete cleft lip. The facial deformity was characterized by a protrusion of the excess of orbicularis oris muscle, irregularities of the upper lip, nose distortion, and septum deviation to the cleft side.

Background And Objective: Stress during pregnancy may alter offspring susceptibility to diseases during adulthood. In the present study, female Lewis rats were subjected to chronic stress during the gestational period, and the effect of this stress was evaluated histometrically on the progression of ligature-induced bone loss in their adult offspring.

Material And Methods: After confirming pregnancy, half of the pregnant rats were randomly designated as control animals (no stress regimen was imposed), and the other half was submitted to a chronic stress model (immobilization at cold temperature) between the 7th and the 18th gestational day.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of gray and white structural and nonstructural Portland cement, gray and white ProRoot MTA and MTA BIO. The water/powder ratio, setting time, solubility and pH (hydrogen-ion potential) changes of the materials were evaluated. Tests followed specification #57 from the American National Standard Institute/American Dental Association (2000) for endodontic sealing materials and pH was determined by a digital pH meter.
