pH-Dependent Release of Vancomycin from Modularly Assembled Collagen Laminates.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2022

Clemens-Schöpf-Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Technical University of Darmstadt, Alarich-Weiss-Straße 8, 64287 Darmstadt, Germany.

To prevent surgical site infections, antibiotics can be released from carriers made of biomaterials, such as collagen, that support the healing process and are slowly degraded in the body. In our labs we have developed collagen laminates that can be easily assembled and bonded on-site, according to medical needs. As shown previously, the asymmetric assembly leads to different release rates at the major faces of the laminate.

December 2021

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, BiomaTiCS, University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg University, Langenbeckstraße 1, Mainz 55131, Germany.

Collagen is one of the most important biomaterials for tissue engineering approaches. Despite its excellent biocompatibility, it shows the non-negligible disadvantage of poor mechanical stability. Photochemical crosslinking with rose bengal and green light (RGX) is an appropriate method to improve this property.

Following reflections by Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann, this paper is concerned with the changing meaning of the profession as a sociological category for analyzing modern society. Professions are practical academic occupational groups oriented to certain social values, to which a special significance for society was attributed in the social sciences for a long time, thus marking a connection between professions' research and theory of society. This paper now describes that the causal relationship between profession and society is limited to a historically relatively early period.

Recurrent mastitis-persistent or new infections?

Vet Microbiol

May 2020

University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Section Production, Nutrition and Health, DK-1870 Frederiksberg C, Denmark. Electronic address:

Recurrent clinical mastitis contributes to around half of all infections having an economic impact in the dairy industry. It leads to milk yield reduction, increased risk of mortality, and culling, and may be caused by new infections or a persistent infection after previous treatment. Disease management is dependent on the infecting species, necessitating accurate identification of the pathogen in the range of persistent and reinfection cases among recurrent infections using culture and molecular biological analysis.

Despite the prevalence of physical exertion and fatigue during military, firefighting and disaster medicine operations, sports or even daily life, their acute effects on moral reasoning and moral decision-making have never been systematically investigated. To test the effects of physical exertion on moral reasoning and moral decision-making, we administered a moral dilemma task to 32 male participants during a moderate or high intensity cycling intervention. Participants in the high intensity cycling group tended to show more non-utilitarian reasoning and more non-utilitarian decision-making on impersonal but not on personal dilemmas than participants in the moderate intensity cycling group.

Unlabelled: Remodeling of calcium phosphate bone cements is a crucial prerequisite for their application in the treatment of large bone defects. In the present study trivalent chromium ions were incorporated into a brushite forming calcium phosphate cement in two concentrations (10 and 50 mmol/mol β-tricalcium phosphate) and implanted into a femoral defect in rats for 3 and 6 month, non-modified brushite was used as reference. Based on our previous in vitro findings indicating both an enhanced osteoclastic activity and cytocompatibility towards osteoprogenitor cells we hypothesized a higher in vivo remodeling rate of the Cr doped cements compared to the reference.
