Effective communication between gynecologic oncology providers and patients is vital to patient-centered care. Skilled communication improves the patient's knowledge retention, builds trust in providers, enhances shared decision-making, and alleviates anxiety of both patients and caregivers. Effective communication is also associated with reduced provider burnout due to improved comfort from possessing the skills to handle emotionally charged situations.

Background: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is a safe and effective option for treatment of liver metastases. However, existing data are mostly reported by high-volume centers. There have been reports that advanced radiotherapy techniques performed at low-volume centers result in inferior outcomes.

Many chemicals have been detected in house dust with exposures to the general public and particularly young children of potential health concern. House dust is also an indicator of chemicals present in consumer products and the built environment that may constitute a health risk. The current analysis compiles a database of recent house dust concentrations from the United States and Canada, focusing upon semi-volatile constituents.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness among American adults above 40 years old. The vascular complication in DR is a major cause of visual impairment, making finding therapeutic targets to block pathological angiogenesis a primary goal for developing DR treatments. MicroRNAs (miRs) have been proposed as diagnostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets for various ocular diseases including DR.

Objective: People with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are at high risk for substance use, and PTSD is common among women experiencing intimate partner violence. Considering the effects of both PTSD and substance use, such as poorer treatment outcomes and greater health/behavior problems, women experiencing intimate partner violence are a high-risk, under-researched group.
Methods: We utilized a micro-longitudinal study design to assess daily drug and alcohol use over 21 days among 41 women experiencing intimate partner violence recruited from the community.

Objective: To investigate whether maternal serum pregnancy associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A), total β human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels and nuchal translucency (NT) measurements differ in women with pre-gestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM) compared to non-diabetic controls and to assess whether correction factors are needed for diabetic women in calculation of aneuploidy risks.
Study Design: We performed a retrospective study of all women who underwent first trimester aneuploidy screening (11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks) from 2005 to 2011. The primary study outcome was the difference in PAPP-A, β-hCG and NT multiples of median between women with PGDM and non-diabetic women.

Maternal pregestational diabetes mellitus is a known risk factor for multiple nonchromosomal congenital anomalies, but there is no clear evidence that diabetes increases the risk for aneuploidy. However, diabetes affects maternal serum analyte concentrations that are used for aneuploidy screening and can alter the false-positive rates of the screening tests. Correction factors are used for women with pregestational diabetes for second-trimester serum analytes used in aneuploidy screening.

Objective: This study aims to describe the daily co-occurrence of physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence (IPV) among substance-using, community-based women currently experiencing IPV.
Methods: A micro-longitudinal study design was used to collect data daily from 49 women for 90 days.
Results: On the majority of days (62%), no IPV occurred; 27% of days were characterized by psychological IPV alone, followed by the co-occurrence of psychological and physical IPV (6% of IPV days).

Prenatal diagnosis for aneuploidy (primarily Down syndrome) has evolved over the past 4 decades. It started as a screening process using maternal age of 35 years or older as a risk factor to offer patients the option for prenatal diagnosis. The actual diagnosis used an invasive procedure (amniocentesis) to obtain fetal cells for processing to determine fetal karyotype.

Warfarin is a widely prescribed drug that is difficult to use because of its narrow therapeutic window. Genetic polymorphisms associated with warfarin metabolism have been identified, but the clinical utility of genetic testing in warfarin dosing has not been established. External validation of published algorithms is critical to determine the best prediction for warfarin dosing in prospective trials.

Workers' compensation reform efforts respond to the competing interests of business, labor and insurers. Early reforms expanded programs in response to inadequate benefits and coverage while in the 1980s and 1990s states responded to increasing costs by tightening fee schedules, limiting physician choice, restricting eligibility, lowering benefits, and integrating managed care into workers' compensation. Although managed care has resulted in significant medical savings, the cost of workers' compensation is again rapidly increasing in some states, where workers' compensation legislation is again at the center of debate.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility that laparoscopic cholecystectomy has worsened the prognosis of patients with resected gallbladder cancer; particularly for patients whose cancer was accidentally resected.
Study Design: We conducted a retrospective review of Connecticut Tumor Registry data and data extracted from individual patient records at 15 of 30 hospitals in Connecticut reporting data to the Registry, at two separate time points, 1985-1988 (immediate prelaparoscopic era) and 1992-95 (laparoscopic cholecystectomy well established). There were 194 and 208 patients in each 3-year period, respectively.

Several studies have examined the electrophysiological correlates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in medically asymptomatic men. Although the rates of HIV infection are increasing at a greater rate in women than men, there have been no publications to date of electrophysiological functioning in HIV-infected women. In the present study, quantitative electroencephalographic (qEEG) activity was measured in 22 women (11 asymptomatic HIV-seropositive and 11 HIV-seronegative) utilizing a procedure comprised of three auditory continuous performance tests and a set of qEEG components derived from principal components analysis.

Bovine PTH-(1-34) (PTH), human recombinant interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1), and cortisol were tested for their effects on bone resorption, prostaglandin (PG) production, and PG endoperoxide synthase (PGH synthase or cyclooxygenase) mRNA levels in cultured mouse parietal bones. Cultures were treated with PTH and IL-1 in the presence and absence of cortisol and arachidonic acid (AA). We found that both PTH and IL-1 stimulated the release of PGE2 and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha (the stable metabolite of PGI2).
