Associations of Kidney Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Biomarkers with Markers of Inflammation in Individuals with CKD.

Kidney360

May 2024

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Center for Translational Metabolism and Health, Institute for Public Health and Medicine, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois.

Article Synopsis
  • Lower baseline apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) indicates higher cortical fibrosis, which correlates with increased serum inflammation markers IL-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP).
  • No correlation was found between baseline cortical relaxation rate (R2*) and inflammation markers, suggesting that R2* may not reflect systemic inflammation.
  • The study evaluated 127 CKD participants, revealing that despite changes in kidney fMRI biomarkers, there was no significant association with changes in inflammatory markers over time.

February 2024

Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Background: Adolescent solid organ transplant recipients (aSOTRs) who received three doses of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine experience high seroconversion rates and antibody persistence for up to 3 months. Long-term antibody durability beyond this timeframe following three doses of the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine remains unknown. We describe antibody responses 6 months following the third vaccine dose (D3) of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination among aSOTRs.

Skiing and snowboarding are popular competitive and recreational sports that can be associated with significant injury. Previous studies of skiing and snowboarding injuries have been conducted, but studies evaluating injury types and patterns over long periods of time are needed to drive effective injury prevention efforts. We hypothesized that injury patterns would differ among snowboarders and skiers and that the number of injuries remained constant over time.

The left-handed Z-conformation of nucleic acids can be adopted by both DNA and RNA when bound by Zα domains found within a variety of innate immune response proteins. Zα domains stabilize this higher-energy conformation by making specific interactions with the unique geometry of Z-DNA/Z-RNA. However, the mechanism by which a right-handed helix contorts to become left-handed in the presence of proteins, including the intermediate steps involved, is poorly understood.

Omicron Infections in Vaccinated Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant Recipients.

J Pediatric Infect Dis Soc

February 2024

Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

SARS-CoV-2 infection during the Omicron period was frequent amongst a cohort of vaccinated pediatric solid organ transplant recipients (pSOTRs) despite robust anti-receptor-binding domain (anti-RBD) antibody response, suggesting poor neutralizing capacity against Omicron subvariants. Breakthrough infections among pSOTRs were overall limited in severity.

Cow's milk allergy is rare in exclusively breastfed infants. To support the continuation of breastfeeding an infant after diagnosis with a cow's milk allergy, it is critical to examine the evidence for and against any form of cow's milk elimination diet for lactating mothers. In this narrative review, we highlight the lack of high-quality evidence, hence subsequent controversy, regarding whether the minuscule quantities of cow's milk proteins detectable in human milk cause infant cow's milk allergy symptoms.

Maternal anxiety during pregnancy predicts infant attention to affective faces.

J Affect Disord

January 2024

Department of Psychology, University of Denver, Denver, CO, USA; Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Irvine, CA, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Prenatal maternal anxiety, particularly pregnancy-related anxiety, can negatively impact how infants focus on emotional faces, which is crucial for their social and emotional development.
  • A study involving 86 mothers showed that higher pregnancy-related anxiety predicted less attention from infants towards emotional faces compared to neutral ones.
  • Although the study found significant correlations, it can't establish a cause-and-effect relationship, highlighting the need for further research on the implications of maternal anxiety on child development.

A generalizable scaffold-based approach for structure determination of RNAs by cryo-EM.

Nucleic Acids Res

November 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Aurora, CO 80045, USA.

Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) can reveal the structures of large and often dynamic molecules, but smaller biomolecules (≤50 kDa) remain challenging targets due to their intrinsic low signal to noise ratio. Methods to help resolve small proteins have been applied but development of similar approaches to aid in structural determination of small, structured RNA elements have lagged. Here, we present a scaffold-based approach that we used to recover maps of sub-25 kDa RNA domains to 4.

Angiogenic and Inflammatory microRNA Regulation in a Mouse Model of Fetal Growth Restriction.

J Surg Res

December 2023

Laboratory for Fetal and Regenerative Biology, Department of Surgery, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Aurora, Colorado; Division of Pediatric Surgery, Children's Hospital Colorado, Aurora, Colorado. Electronic address:

Introduction: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with impaired angiogenesis and chronic inflammation. MicroRNAs (miRs) are short noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by targeting messenger RNA (mRNA) for degradation or by suppressing translation. We hypothesize that dysregulation of miR-15b, an antiangiogenic miR, and miR-146a, an anti-inflammatory miR, are associated with the FGR's pathogenesis.
