Longing for sleep after violence: The impact of PTSD symptoms, avoidance, and pain on insomnia among female veterans.

Psychiatry Res

July 2022

Women's Health Sciences Division, National Center for PTSD, VA Boston Healthcare System, Boston, MA, United States; Department of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, United States.

Women survivors of intimate partner violence often struggle with mental and physical problems that arise from incidents of violence. Beyond posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the most common outcome, women also may suffer from debilitating chronic pain due to physical injuries sustained during particularly violent physical and/or sexual encounters. This may be a key interaction to explore as PTSD can lead to avoidance of distressing experiences, including chronic pain, resulting in enduring medical problems such as extreme sleep difficulties.

Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) is seen as a win-win situation for governments. It is argued that SSB taxes are relatively easy to implement from a practical perspective compared to for example other nutrition policies. However, the implementation of SSB taxation laws does not happen by itself.

Cardiac risk factors are known to compound the development of cardiotoxicities (CTx) in patients exposed to anthracycline (ANT) chemotherapy agents. National oncology and cardiology organizations have published recommendations for cardiovascular risk stratification and screening cancer patients following exposure to ANTs. The frequency with which oncology providers are integrating these principles into practice is unknown.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging thermometry is an extremely useful technique which allows one to determine, noninvasively, the temperature deep in the tissue in two or three dimensions. Many methods of MR thermometry have been developed, including those that rely on the intrinsic MR properties of tissue and those which depend on the addition of contrast agents injected into the tissue to create temperature dependent MR images. One such method is to introduce magnetic particles whose magnetization's temperature dependence influences the MR properties of the surrounding tissue and obtain temperature from calibrated intensity changes of T* weighted MR images.

Article Synopsis
  • This retrospective study investigates the rates of positive acid-fast bacillus (AFB) and fungal infections during spine debridement to identify their prevalence across different spine segments and associated comorbidities.
  • The study found a 4% incidence of fungal infections and a significantly lower 0.49% rate of AFB infections, with steroid use increasing the likelihood of positive cultures.
  • It concludes that while fungal cultures are worth performing for patients at higher risk (like those on steroids), AFB cultures are generally not cost-effective due to low incidence rates.

Purpose: One standard method, proton resonance frequency shift, for measuring temperature using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in MRI-guided surgeries, fails completely below the freezing point of water. Because of this, we have developed a new methodology for monitoring temperature with MRI below freezing. The purpose of this paper is to show that a strong temperature dependence of the nuclear relaxation time T in soft silicone polymers can lead to temperature-dependent changes of MRI intensity acquired with T weighting.

In a channel shared by several nodes, the scheduling algorithm is a key factor to avoiding collisions in the random access-based approach. Commonly, scheduling algorithms can be used to enhance network performance to meet certain requirements. Therefore, in this paper we propose a Delay-Aware Media Access Control (DAMAC) protocol for monitoring time-sensitive applications over multi-hop in Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs), which relies on the random access-based approach where each node uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) to determine channel status, switches nodes on and off to conserve energy, and allows concurrent transmissions to improve the underwater communication in the UASNs.

The interpersonal circumplex is a model that places interpersonal problems along two axes (communion and agency), resulting in eight theoretically derived patterns. Application of the circumplex to older adults is poorly understood. Subsequently, this study examined relationships between the interpersonal circumplex and personality disorder (PD) features among older adults, since social impairments are core components of PDs.

, the causative agent of Lyme disease, traverses through vastly distinct environments between the tick vector and the multiple phases of the mammalian infection that requires genetic adaptation for the progression of pathogenesis. Borrelial gene expression is highly responsive to changes in specific environmental signals that initiate the RpoS regulon for mammalian adaptation, but the mechanism(s) for direct detection of environmental cues has yet to be identified. Secondary messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) produced by adenylate cyclase is responsive to environmental signals, such as carbon source and pH, in many bacterial pathogens to promote virulence by altering gene regulation.
