Background: The optimal time to initiate venous thromboembolism (VTE) chemoprophylaxis (VTEp) after blunt solid organ injury remains controversial, as VTE mitigation must be balanced against bleeding promulgation. Evidence from primarily small, retrospective, single-center work suggests that VTEp ≤48 hours is safe and effective. This study was undertaken to validate this clinical practice.

Distilled spirits can be very complex in their sensory or organoleptic compounds. Of significant interest is determination of the concentration of methanol, ethyl acetate, and fusel oils, which include n-propanol, isobutanol, n-butanol, active amyl (2-methyl-1-butanol) and isoamyl (3-methyl-1-butanol) alcohols. Here, we describe a validated method for the analysis of these analytes using a headspace (HS) sampling unit coupled with a gas chromatograph fitted with a flame ionization detector (GC/FID) for profiling these analytes in distilled spirits ( = 26) obtained from local retailers.

Complement activation at a particular location is determined by the balance of activating and inhibitory proteins. Factor H is a key regulator of the alternative pathway of complement, and genetic or acquired impairments in Factor H are associated with glomerular injury. The human Factor H-related proteins (FHRs) comprise a family of five proteins that are structurally related to Factor H.

Regioselective Reduction of 1-1,2,3-Triazole Diesters.

Molecules

September 2021

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, CO 80918, USA.

Regioselective reactions can play pivotal roles in synthetic organic chemistry. The reduction of several 1-substituted 1,2,3-triazole 4,5-diesters by sodium borohydride has been found to be regioselective, with the C(5) ester groups being more reactive towards reduction than the C(4) ester groups. The amount of sodium borohydride and reaction time required for reduction varied greatly depending on the N(1)-substituent.

Purpose Of Review: Addressing the reduced quality of life that affects ICU survivors is the most pressing challenge in critical care medicine. In order to meet this challenge, we must translate lessons learnt from assessing and training athletes to the clinical population, utilizing measurable and targeted parameters obtained during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).

Recent Findings: Critical illness survivors demonstrate a persistent reduction in their physical and metabolic function.

Background: The prevalence of allergic and autoimmune conditions has been steadily increasing in wealthy nations over the past century. One hypothesis put forward to explain this is the Old Friends Hypothesis, which posits that increased hygiene, urbanization, and lifestyle changes have reduced our exposure to parasites and microbes that we co-evolved with, resulting in immune dysregulation. However, research in traditionally living populations, who are exposed to greater parasite and pathogen loads such as those encountered during our evolution, is limited, in part due to a lack of minimally invasive, field-friendly biomarkers of autoimmune disorders.

Child maltreatment data in the state of New Mexico across space and time.

Data Brief

August 2020

New Mexico Community Data Collaborative 12401 Los Arboles Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112, United States.

Child maltreatment is a serious public health problem. Previous research demonstrates that child maltreatment clusters in low-income, racially homogenous neighborhoods. Little is known, however, about the structural correlates of spatial risk in small areas such as census tracts.

Objectives: Investigating factors that contribute to bone loss and accretion across populations in remote settings is challenging, particularly where diagnostic tools are scarce. To mitigate this challenge, we describe validation of a commercial ELISA assay to measure osteocalcin, a biomarker of bone formation, from dried blood spots (DBS).

Methods: We validated the Osteocalcin Human SimpleStep ELISA kit from Abcam (ab1951214) using 158 matched plasma and DBS samples.

Background: Although the rate of cannabis use by older adults is increasing more quickly than all other age groups, little is known about the reasons why older adults use cannabis and the outcomes they experience.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the most salient themes concerning the use of medical and recreational cannabis by older adults living in Colorado. Specifically, we sought to (1) characterize perceptions of cannabis use by users and non-users, (2) determine how older adults access cannabis, and (3) explicate both positive and negative outcomes associated with cannabis use.

Background: We examined how positive affect (PA) and meaning in life (MIL) conjointly regulate posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and perceived coping self-efficacy. Hypotheses were guided by a recent holistic model, according to which PA and MIL should compensate for each other in relating to adaptation to high stress.

Method: The sample included 75 Israeli firefighters who took active part in extinguishing the 2010 Mount Carmel forest fire.
