Mitochondrial and autophagy dysfunction are mechanisms proposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative diseases. Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with mutant Huntingtin-induced abnormalities in neuronal mitochondrial dynamics and quality control. Former studies suggest that the removal of defective mitochondria may be compromised in HD.

Hodgkin's variant of Richter transformation is a rare complication of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and is associated with inferior outcomes compared to de novo Hodgkin lymphoma. Further data concerning prognosis and treatment of Hodgkin's variant of Richter transformation occurring in the setting of novel targeted therapies are needed.

However, its impact on oral healthcare is still to be fully assessed. The aim of this study was to understand if and how COVID-19 affected the demand and performance of oral healthcare, taking the Clinical and Academic Centre of Coimbra as an example, more specifically, the Department of Stomatology of the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre and the Dentistry Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.

The adoption of several perioperative strategies translates into an improvement in the quality of the healthcare provided. The aim of this study was to report the results of the implementation of the ERAS® program for colorectal surgery in a tertiary hospital.

In light of this, a glass-ceramic (GC) has been incorporated into chitosan and gelatin electrospun nanofibers (240-360 nm), which MEFs were loaded on it for healing acceleration. The GC was doped with silver to improve the antibacterial activity.

Introduction: Over recent decades, brain resection for drug-resistant epilepsy has proven to be a valuable treatment option. The histopathological classification was of paramount value for patient management. The aims of this study were to characterize our resective epilepsy surgical series including the histopathological diagnoses and to understand the differences in clinical practice between two different periods of our epilepsy surgical programme.

Plasmodium falciparum artemisinin-resistance boosted the quest for novel plasmodial "fast killers," uncovering antimalarial candidates OZ439 and E209, whose peroxide precursors are 1,2,4-trioxolane (1) and 1,2,4,5-tetraoxane (2), differing solely in the pharmacophore (trioxolane or tetraoxane). Combining X-ray crystallography and vibrational spectroscopy, along with Hirshfeld surface analysis and calculations (CE-B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) of pairwise interaction energies of intermolecular contacts existing in the crystal structure, may deepen the understanding of relative reactivity and properties of these endoperoxides classes. In the crystal, the tetraoxane ring in 2 and the trioxolane-adamantyl fragment in 1 are disordered, with molecules 1 and 2 existing as two distinct, stable conformations.

The climate is currently warming fast, threatening biodiversity all over the globe. Populations often adapt rapidly to environmental change, but for climate warming very little evidence is available. Here, we investigate the pattern of adaptation to an extreme +10°C climate change in the wild, following the introduction of brine shrimp from San Francisco Bay, USA, to Vinh Chau saltern in Vietnam.

Background: The use of the Ablation Index (AI) software for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) has been associated with higher acute effectiveness and higher 1-year arrhythmia freedom. There is, however, a lack of data concerning longer follow-up. We aim to evaluate the 2-year outcomes after a standardized AI-guided pulmonary vein isolation (PVI).

GOLD proposes using this questionnaire, since it provides thorough coverage of the impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on well-being. This questionnaire has been widely used in daily clinical practice in Portugal, but it lacks validation for European Portuguese.

Introduction: Stigma is associated with poor prognosis of illness and reduced help-seeking behavior, self-esteem and treatment compliance. The aims of this study were to study the reliability and construct validity of the King's et al Stigma Scale, and its association with Illness and Help-Seeking Behaviors scale (IHSBS) scores.
Material And Methods: One hundred and forty mental health patients filled out the Stigma scale and the Illness and Help-Seeking Behaviors scale.
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NFT1) is a disease caused by mutations in the tumor suppressor gene NF1. It is associated with a higher incidence of chromaffin cell tumors which are usually adrenal, unilateral and benign. The presence of these tumors during pregnancy is extremely rare and frequently associated with fatal outcomes.

Hereditary pyrimidine 5-nucleotidase (P5'N-1) deficiency is a very rare disorder. Here, we describe a new mutation in a Turkish family. Although functional tests have not been performed, our findings confirm that the homozygous mutational state leads to clinical manifest P5'N-1 deficiency, while heterozygosity does not lead to hemolysis or anemia.

In Portugal, the consequences on emergent pacemaker implantation rates are largely unknown. We sought to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emergent pacemaker implantation rate and patient profile.

Here, we used a fluorescently-labelled miRNA to quantify the efficiency of different methods to modulate the cargo of sEVs. Our results showed that, compared with electroporation, heat shock, permeation by a detergent-based compound (saponin) or cholesterol-modification of the miRNA, Exo-Fect was the most efficient method with > 50% transfection efficiency.

Introduction: We aimed to assess episodic memory in genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD) with the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT).
Methods: The FCSRT was administered in 417 presymptomatic and symptomatic mutation carriers (181 chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 [], 163 progranulin [], and 73 microtubule-associated protein tau []) and 290 controls. Group differences and correlations with other neuropsychological tests were examined.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought dramatic worldwide consequences affecting social, economic and healthcare systems. Considering that the number of infected patients requiring admission to intensive care units far exceeded the available resources, healthcare professionals have had to face challenging decisions concerning who should benefit from the limited resources and who should not. In this context, after a careful ethical reflection, we propose some principles to be adopted when dealing with allocation resource decisions, based on core ethical values.

Bananas and plantains are major commodity/food crops that represent an important habitat for earthworms, although so far, no review is available on earthworm communities associated with banana/plantain crops worldwide. The Vale do Ribeira region is among the largest banana producing areas in Brazil, but little is known of the earthworms living there. Hence, the present study assessed earthworm populations and species in three banana plantations and adjacent Atlantic forest fragments along the Ribeira de Iguape River using standard (hand sorting) methodologies.

It is widely used in clinical practice in Portugal, but it still lacks confirmatory evaluation for the Portuguese setting. The aim of this study was to perform a cultural adaptation and validation of the Modified British Medical Research Council Questionnaire so that its most suitable version can be made available to researchers and clinicians in Portugal.
