Purpose: To identify biomarkers in human blood or urine at an early stage of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to elucidate if any can accurately differentiate between healthy controls and early knee OA patients and be considered as a candidate for widespread clinical use for early diagnosis of the disease.

Methods: Medline, Embase and Web of Science were screened to identify comparative studies measuring differences in blood or urine biomarkers between healthy controls and knee OA patients at an early stage (grade 1 or 2 Kellgren-Laurence). Two independent reviewers screened the abstracts for eligibility, reviewed the full texts, assessed the methodological quality and extracted the data.

Objective: This scoping review will map the available evidence on communication protocols for breaking bad news to adult patients and their families in health care.

Introduction: Breaking bad news to adult patients and their families is a challenging task for health care professionals. To address these challenges, communication protocols have been developed to support health care professionals in breaking bad news in a compassionate and effective manner while respecting each patient's individuality.

Cannabigerol, cannabidiol, cannabinol and cannabichromene are non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids, highly present in , for which numerous therapeutical applications have been described. However, additional pre-clinical and clinical data, including toxicopharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies, remain required to support their use in clinical practice and new therapeutic applications. To support these studies, a new high performance liquid chromatography technique (HPLC) with diode-array detection (DAD) was developed and validated to quantify these cannabinoids in human plasma and mouse matrices.

The predatory firefly is common throughout the Atlantic Forest and has been proposed as a biomonitor due to the species' narrow niche and elevational range. However, the species is only known from adults, and a more effective monitoring of its populations hinges on the lack of knowledge on their immature stages. Recent sampling in ferruginous caves and inserted in other lithologies, on sites in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, have led to the capture of firefly larvae later reared to adults in the lab.

Leukemia is a heterogeneous group of life-threatening malignant disorders of the hematopoietic system. Immunotherapy, radiotherapy, stem cell transplantation, targeted therapy, and chemotherapy are among the approved leukemia treatments. Unfortunately, therapeutic resistance, side effects, relapses, and long-term sequelae occur in a significant proportion of patients and severely compromise the treatment efficacy.

Introduction: We aimed to expand the range of the frontotemporal dementia (FTD) phenotypes assessed by the Clinical Dementia Rating Dementia Staging Instrument plus National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Behavior and Language Domains (CDR plus NACC FTLD).

Methods: Neuropsychiatric and motor domains were added to the standard CDR plus NACC FTLD generating a new CDR plus NACC FTLD-NM scale. This was assessed in 522 mutation carriers and 310 mutation-negative controls from the Genetic Frontotemporal dementia Initiative (GENFI).

FamFac - A Database of Famous Faces for Psychology Experiments.

Int J Psychol Res (Medellin)

Digital Human-Environment Interaction Lab (HEI-Lab), Lusófona University, Lisbon, Portugal. Lusófona University Lisbon Portugal.

Article Synopsis
  • Variations in visual stimuli and familiarity with faces can skew research on how we process familiar versus unfamiliar faces, which may lead to misleading results in studies.
  • To solve this, the authors created a database of 183 famous faces with controlled brightness, size, and resolution, ensuring a consistent level of familiarity.
  • The study found that their standardization algorithm effectively maintained brightness levels, and they confirmed familiarity levels with input from college students, providing useful resources for future research without confounding effects.

Tens of millions of images from biological collections have become available online over the last two decades. In parallel, there has been a dramatic increase in the capabilities of image analysis technologies, especially those involving machine learning and computer vision. While image analysis has become mainstream in consumer applications, it is still used only on an artisanal basis in the biological collections community, largely because the image corpora are dispersed.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) impacts 7-10 million people globally, with no existing treatments to halt or slow down its progression, largely due to a lack of understanding about how dopaminergic neuron death occurs.
  • Current treatments mainly aim to compensate for dopamine deficiency in the brain but don't adequately address the underlying disease mechanisms.
  • Recent research highlights the immune system's role in PD, suggesting that targeting immune pathways could improve treatment outcomes alongside existing dopaminergic therapies.

EuDiS - A comprehensive database of the seed dispersal syndromes of the European flora.

Centre for Functional Ecology, Associate Laboratory TERRA, Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal Centre for Functional Ecology, Associate Laboratory TERRA, Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra Coimbra Portugal.

Background: Seed dispersal is a critical process in plant colonisation and demography. Fruits and seeds can be transported by several vectors (typically animals, wind and water), which may have exerted strong selective pressures on plant's morphological traits. The set of traits that favour dispersal by a specific vector have been historically considered as seed dispersal syndromes.

Uncovering the temporal and spatial dynamics of biological communities in response to biotic and abiotic drivers is essential to predict the effects of environmental change on biodiversity. Similarly, estimating species vulnerability in the face of such dynamics is crucial for implementing effective conservation actions. We explored how bat diversity changes over the year across an altitudinal gradient and identified the environmental drivers that shape bat communities.

Introduction: Parental perceptions of a child's weight status may influence family readiness to foster healthy behaviors. Our aim was to observe parental perceptions of their child's weight status in two time periods and in multiple population subgroups.

Methods: Data were collected in two national projects, 2009 - 2010 (n = 6577) and 2016 - 2017 (n = 7594), in public and private kindergartens and primary schools in Portugal (children aged three to 10 years old).

Invasive species often possess a great capacity to adapt to novel environments in the form of spatial trait variation, as a result of varying selection regimes, genetic drift, or plasticity. We explored the geographic differentiation in several phenotypic traits related to plant growth, reproduction, and defense in the highly invasive by measuring neutral genetic differentiation ( ), and comparing it with phenotypic differentiation ( ), in a common garden experiment in individuals originating from regions representing the species distribution across five continents. Native plants were more fecund than non-native plants, but the latter displayed considerably larger seed mass.

  • - The study aimed to evaluate how common cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) are in patients with acute unilateral inner ear hypofunction (AUIEH) and their effects, focusing on conditions like acute unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy (AUPVP) and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 125 patients and 250 control participants, finding that patients had significantly higher rates of CVRFs like high blood pressure, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, with an increased risk for AUIEH linked to having two or more CVRFs.
  • - The conclusion suggests that patients with AUIEH have a notably higher prevalence of CVRFs, and underscores the need for

Scientific collections have been built by people. For hundreds of years, people have collected, studied, identified, preserved, documented and curated collection specimens. Understanding who those people are is of interest to historians, but much more can be made of these data by other stakeholders once they have been linked to the people's identities and their biographies.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) as therapeutic agents have attracted increasing interest in the past decade owing to their significant effectiveness in treating a wide array of ailments. These polymerases II-derived noncoding RNAs act through post-transcriptional controlling of different proteins and their allied pathways. Like other areas of medicine, researchers have utilized miRNAs for managing acute and chronic wounds.
