Community pharmacy is currently experiencing significant changes that will likely transform practice in unpredictable ways. With student interest in pursuing community pharmacy practice postgraduation on the decline, the Academy needs to ensure that a sufficient number of students passionate in community practice enter the workforce to guide this transformation in a positive manner for the profession and patients. This commentary reviews the ways that pharmacy faculty may promote community pharmacy during the students' academic experiences.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this article is to describe how health professions students were trained and incorporated as health coaches into a group diabetes self-management education (DSME) program in an underserved, urban federally qualified health center.
Educational Activity And Setting: Nursing, pharmacy, and physical therapy students from three local colleges were provided health coach training and then integrated into the DSME program with faculty assistance. The students connected with the assigned participants both in person and via weekly telephone calls over a three-month time period, applying concepts learned and providing patient-centered support.

Although there is evidence to support implementing interprofessional education (IPE) in the health sciences, widespread implementation in health professions education is not yet a reality. Challenges include the diversity in location and settings of schools and colleges, ie, many are not located within an academic health center. Faculty members may not have the necessary skill set for teaching in an IPE environment.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important step in advancing health professional education for many years and has been endorsed by the Institute of Medicine as a mechanism to improve the overall quality of health care. IPE has also become an area of focus for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), with several groups, including these authors from the AACP Interprofessional Education Task Force, working on developing resources to promote and support IPE planning and development. This review provides background on the definition of IPE, evidence to support IPE, the need for IPE, student competencies and objectives for IPE, barriers to implementation of IPE, and elements critical for successfully implementing IPE.
