Temperament is a dynamic trait that can be shaped by maturity and environmental experiences. In this study, we sought to determine whether and the extent to which temperament was predicted by sleeping behaviors in an understudied sample of primarily Black and White infants and toddlers living in low-income homes (N = 150). Sleeping behaviors were assessed at 15-19 months of age with caregiver report of the Tayside Children's Sleep Questionnaire.

Opioid-Related Risk Screening Measures for the Emergency Care Setting.

Adv Emerg Nurs J

October 2021

University of Cincinnati College of Nursing, Cincinnati, Ohio (Drs Punches and Clark); Departments of Emergency Medicine (Drs Punches, Freiermuth, and Lyons) and Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience (Dr Brown), University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio; and UC Health, Cincinnati, Ohio (Dr Alhaj Ali).

Efforts to minimize the impact of prescribed opioids on future adverse outcomes are reliant on emergency care providers' ability to screen and detect opioid use disorder (OUD). Many prescriptions are initiated in the emergency department (ED) for acute pain; thus, validated measures are especially needed. Our systematic review describes the available opioid-related screening measures identified through search of the available literature.

Student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) experience high levels of stress related to the level of difficulty and time commitment associated with an integrated Doctor of Nursing Practice anesthesia program. Although some degree of stress is necessary for motivation, unmanaged stress can contribute to illness, dissatisfaction, and substance use. A search of the literature showed that mindfulness meditation training reduces stress and improves academic performance in graduate student populations.

Social Determinants of Health Needs and Pediatric Health Care Use.

J Pediatr

November 2021

Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH; Department of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Public Health, Columbus, OH.

Objective: To examine the associations between family-reported social needs in primary care settings and pediatric health care use.

Study Design: Data were obtained for a sample of 56 253 children and youths (age 0-21 years) who received primary care at a large hospital-based pediatric institution between June 2018 and October 2019 to estimate a propensity score for the probability of being seen in a primary care clinic. Inverse probability weighted regression specifications were used to examine the associations between reported social needs and health care use.

Article Synopsis
  • PTSD is linked to reduced gray matter volume in the brain areas important for learning to overcome fear, but how this affects PTSD symptoms is unclear.
  • A study involving 99 participants used MRI scans and self-assessments to explore the relationship between brain volume, fear responses, and PTSD symptoms after trauma exposure.
  • The findings reveal that interactions between thalamic gray matter volume and fear responses during extinction learning can predict PTSD symptoms, suggesting that these factors are critical for understanding who may be more vulnerable to adverse effects after trauma.

While research evidence exists about Jordanian men's perceptions and attitudes about violence against women (VAW), there is a scientific gap for addressing VAW as a Jordanian cultural norm. This study aimed to describe Jordanian men's perceptions and attitudes toward VAW, leading factors for VAW, and strategies to combat VAW. A qualitative descriptive design was used with 14 Jordanian men and semi-structured interviews.

Objective: Therapeutic opioid exposure is associated with long-term use. How much later use is due to opioid use disorder (OUD) and the incidence of OUD without preceding therapeutic exposure are unknown. We preliminarily explored the association between emergency department opioid prescriptions and subsequent OUD.

The opioid crisis is a national health emergency with immense morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic cost. Emergency department (ED) pain management is tightly linked to the issue of opioid use disorder (OUD), because opioid exposure is necessary for development of OUD. Emergency nurses are on the frontlines of this complex problem, yet little, if any, attention has been paid to the role they play in the prevention and management of either pain or OUD in this unique and important setting.

Introduction: Influenza can be a significant health threat for any affected individual. Pregnant women are a high-risk population because of the likelihood of developing severe disease. Although the influenza vaccine has been recommended for use by pregnant women since 2004, current vaccination rates among pregnant women are lower than the general population and other high-risk groups.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has resulted in severe health, economic, social, political, and cultural consequences while thrusting Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) at the forefront of battling an often invisible enemy. A mixed-methods study was conducted to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CRNA practice. The purpose of the qualitative component of the study, a focused ethnography, was to use personal and group interviews to determine the shared experiences of CRNAs who worked during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: To describe the proportion of children with an index hospitalization in 2014 who had established long-term invasive ventilator dependence (LTVD), and determine regional variation in hospital length of stay, charges, and readmissions.

Design And Methods: Multicenter, longitudinal, retrospective cohort study using a recently established algorithm to identify children with LTVD from the Pediatric Health Information System database with an index hospitalization at least once during 2014, excluding normal newborn care or chemotherapy, and the subset with established LTVD. Hospitals were grouped by geographic regions.

Over the last 3 years at a large, -midwestern, pediatric hospital, there have been near -disaster events, a few of which required transfer or evacuation of patients. The responses from the inpatient units to these events have varied greatly and can be traced back to communication, knowledge, comfort level, and effectiveness of the charge nurses on the nursing units. A task force was formed to understand the variation in their disaster response procedures and to standardize disaster response procedures.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to design and evaluate a goal-setting tip sheet to improve stroke family caregiver health as part of the Telephone Assessment and Skill-Building Kit program.

Design: A multimethod design using open-ended questions and rating forms was used in this study.

Methods: In two studies, the goal-setting tip sheet was evaluated by caregivers (N = 12; N = 6), researchers (N = 10; N = 3), clinicians (N = 8; N = 4), and technology experts (N = 4; N = 4).

Optimal sleeping behaviors are critical for overall development, yet some evidence suggests stress and living in a low-income environment are associated with disruptions of sleeping behaviors early in life. In this study, we investigated the association of toddler sleeping behaviors, particularly difficulties initiating and/or maintaining sleep (DIMS), and maternal and toddler prolonged stress using hair cortisol from dyads living in low-income homes. Hair cortisol was mainly sampled at the posterior vertex of mothers and toddlers (age 20-24 months) and analyzed with immunoassay (n = 94).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of kidney biomarkers in predicting major adverse kidney events (MAKE) in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and compares these predictions to traditional serum creatinine levels.
  • Blood and urine samples were collected from AKI patients and matched controls to evaluate the association of biomarkers like NGAL and cystatin C with MAKE at hospital discharge.
  • Findings indicate that higher levels of NGAL and cystatin C correlate significantly with increased risk of MAKE-DC, suggesting these biomarkers could enhance clinical prediction models for kidney-related complications.*

Family caregivers exhibit a wide variety of needs and concerns while providing care to stroke survivors after discharge to the home setting. We report the results of two related studies utilizing a multimethod design in which stroke family caregivers (N = 12; N = 10) were interviewed using open-ended questions, followed by written caregiver ratings regarding the types of telehealth technologies they preferred for the telephone assessment and skill-building kit (TASK III). Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis procedures with a provisional "start list" of codes in a matrix template based on the types of telehealth technologies in the rating forms.
