Rationale: Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are implicated in the reinforcing effects of nicotine and ethanol. Previous studies have shown that cytisine and its 5-bromo derivative are partial agonists at the α4β2 nAChRs and that the parent molecule cytisine is effective in reducing both nicotine- and ethanol-self-administration in rats. However, whether 5-bromocytisine affects nicotine or ethanol self-administration was unknown.

Scaling the Andean Shilajit: A Novel Neuroprotective Agent for Alzheimer's Disease.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

July 2023

Laboratory of Neuroscience and Functional Medicine, International Center for Biomedicine, Faculty of Sciences, University of Chile, Santiago 7800003, Chile.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disorder without a cure, despite the enormous number of investigations and therapeutic approaches. AD is a consequence of microglial responses to "damage signals", such as aggregated tau oligomers, which trigger a neuro-inflammatory reaction, promoting the misfolding of cytoskeleton structure. Since AD is the most prevalent cause of dementia in the elderly (>60 years old), new treatments are essential to improve the well-being of affected subjects.

In terrestrial hot springs, some members of the microbial mat community utilize sulfur chemical species for reduction and oxidization metabolism. In this study, the diversity and activity of sulfur-metabolizing bacteria were evaluated along a temperature gradient (48-69 °C) in non-acidic phototrophic mats of the Porcelana hot spring (Northern Patagonia, Chile) using complementary meta-omic methodologies and specific amplification of the A (APS reductase) and B (thiosulfohydrolase) genes. Overall, the key players in sulfur metabolism varied mostly in abundance along the temperature gradient, which is relevant for evaluating the possible implications of microorganisms associated with sulfur cycling under the current global climate change scenario.

Interdisciplinary teamwork is essential for the rehabilitation of patients with cleft lip and palate, and therefore, the application of treatment techniques for velopharyngeal insufficiency, both surgical and prosthetic, depends on the experience of each rehabilitation team. For this reason, the following study consisting of the cooperation between interdisciplinary cleft lip and palate teams from Chile and Argentina, which succeeded in correcting velopharyngeal insufficiency in an adolescent, initially using a pharyngeal bulb prosthesis and speech therapy, and finally through pharyngeal flap surgery, is presented. This shows that international cooperation is a valuable tool for training, implementation, and follow-up of different treatment techniques for teams in formation.
