Background: Ribosome-binding factor A from the pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PaRbfA) is a small ribosome assembly factor, composed by a single KH domain, involved in the maturation of the 30S subunit. These domains are characterized by the ability to bind RNA or ssDNA and are often located in proteins involved in a variety of cellular functions. However, although the ability of proteins to fold properly, to misfold or to aggregate is of paramount importance for their cellular functions, limited information is available on these dynamic properties in the case of KH domains.

Nucleophosmin (NPM1) is a mainly nucleolar protein that shuttles between nucleoli, nucleoplasm and cytoplasm to fulfill its many functions. It is a chaperone of both nucleic acids and proteins and plays a role in cell cycle control, centrosome duplication, ribosome maturation and export, as well as the cellular response to a variety of stress stimuli. NPM1 is a hub protein in nucleoli where it contributes to nucleolar organization through heterotypic and homotypic interactions.

The anterior abdominal wall, which is composed of three layers (skin and adipose tissues; the myofascial layer; and the deep layer, consisting of the transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and the parietal peritoneum), has many functions: containment, support and protection for the intraperitoneal contents, and involvement in movement and breathing. While hernias are often encountered and well reviewed in the literature, the other abdominal wall pathologies are less commonly described. In this pictorial review, we briefly discuss the normal anatomy of the anterior abdominal wall, describe the normal ultrasonographic anatomy, and present a wide range of pathologic abnormalities beyond hernias.

A multitarget pharmacologic approach could be advantageous for the therapy of metabolic multiple diseases, such as the metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by metabolic abnormalities associated with diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and increased cardiovascular risk. PPAR receptors play a critical role in metabolic disorders, affecting glucose and lipid metabolism. Drugs simultaneously targeting PPAR and other validated metabolic targets, represent a promising multitarget approach to combine antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, and antihypertensive effects.

FXR is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily, which regulates the expression of various genes involved in bile acid, lipid and glucose metabolism. Targeting FXR with small molecules has been exploited to treat lipid-related disorders and diseases such as cholestasis, gallstones and hepatic disorders. In this work, we expand the existing pool of known FXR agonists using a fast hit-to-lead structure-based pharmacophore and docking screening protocol.

In mammalian cells, aberrant iNOS induction may have detrimental consequences, and seems to be involved in the proliferation and progression of different tumors, such as malignant gliomas. Therefore, selective inhibition of iNOS could represent a feasible therapeutic strategy to treat these conditions. In this context, we have previously disclosed new acetamidines able to inhibit iNOS with a very high selectivity profile over eNOS or nNOS.

Bovine lactoferrin is a biglobular multifunctional iron binding glycoprotein that plays an important role in innate immunity against infections. We have previously demonstrated that selected peptides from bovine lactoferrin C-lobe are able to prevent both Influenza virus hemagglutination and cell infection. To deeper investigate the ability of lactoferrin derived peptides to inhibit Influenza virus infection, in this study we identified new bovine lactoferrin C-lobe derived sequences and corresponding synthetic peptides were synthesized and assayed to check their ability to prevent viral hemagglutination and infection.

Myelofibrosis (MF) is characterized by hyperactivation of thrombopoietin (TPO) signaling, which induces a RPS14 deficiency that de-regulates GATA1 in megakaryocytes by hampering its mRNA translation. As mice carrying the hypomorphic Gata1 mutation, which reduces the levels of Gata1 mRNA in megakaryocytes, develop MF, we investigated whether the TPO axis is hyperactive in this model. Gata1 mice contained two times more Tpo mRNA in liver and TPO in plasma than wild-type littermates.
