We present He and Ne isotopes of individual presolar graphite grains from a low-density separate from Orgueil. Two grain mounts were analyzed with the same techniques but in a different sequence: The first one was measured with NanoSIMS followed by noble gas mass spectrometry, and the second one in reverse order. No grain contained He and only one grain on the second mount contained He.

The receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) is a multiligand receptor that binds a variety of structurally and functionally unrelated ligands, including advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), amyloid fibrils, amphoterin, and members of the S100 family of proteins. The receptor has been implicated in the pathology of diabetes as well as in inflammatory processes and tumor cell metastasis. For the present study, the extracellular region of RAGE (exRAGE) was expressed as a soluble, C-terminal hexahistidine-tagged fusion protein in the periplasmic space of Escherichia coli.

Subjective feelings of craving for drugs and alcohol are hallmark symptoms of substance abuse and dependence, and they are thought to play a pivotal role in relapse to drug use. However, relatively little is known about the relationship between craving and overt drug-seeking behavior or drug consumption. One way to investigate the relationship between self-report measures of craving and objective measures of drug-taking behavior is to investigate the degree to which they co-vary in laboratory studies.

The authors developed a temporal subtraction scheme based on a nonlinear geometric warping technique to assist radiologists in the detection of interval changes in chest radiographs obtained on different occasions. The performance of the current temporal subtraction scheme is reasonably good; however, severe misregistration can occur in some cases. The authors evaluated the quality of 100 chest temporal subtraction images selected from their clinical image database.

Background: The functioning of the brain serotonin system has been implicated in the action of antidepressant drugs. The behavior of rats performing the Differential Reinforcement of Low Rate-72 sec (DRL 72s) has been used as a screen for drugs with antidepressant activity. Many antidepressant drugs alter serotonergic function.

An overview of recent research on adolescent sexual activity, pregnancy, and parenthood is presented, with a focus on the dearth of knowledge concerning psychological precursors and consequences. Although the rate of teenage childbearing has decreased substantially this century, increasing rates of sexual activity, illegitimacy, and welfare receipt raise public concerns. New research is discussed that suggests that many negative outcomes previously ascribed to mothers' age are as much causes or correlates of teenage pregnancy as effects of it, although this claim is less substantiated regarding effects on children of teenage mothers.

Purpose: Dysregulation of genes that control apoptosis can contribute to tumor progression and increased drug resistance. The BCL2 gene and its family member BCL-x as well as the TP53 genes regulate apoptosis and have been shown to have a direct effect on the sensitivity of cancer cells to radiation and chemotherapeutic agents.
Methods: The expression of BCL-x, a BCL2-related protein that is a potent inhibitor of apoptosis, was investigated by immunohistochemical and immunoblot methods in 43 primary untreated breast carcinomas, in conjunction with BCL2 and TP53.

The kinetics of the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) isoform NHE4 were studied by measuring 22Na+ fluxes in stably transfected NHE-deficient fibroblasts. Unlike NHE1, NHE2, and NHE3, activation of this isoform is dependent on hyperosmolarity-induced cell shrinkage. It is virtually inactive at isosmolarity and most active at 490 mosM.

Neonatal intensive care has increased neonatal survival, but has also led to postponement of some of the neonatal deaths to the postneonatal period, particularly in very low birthweight (< 1.5 kg) infants. Our report assesses the impact of the increased neonatal survival and the accompanying delayed deaths on the crude postneonatal mortality rate of the US, using the national livebirth cohort data of 1960, 1980, and 1986.

Thimerosal inhibits calcium uptake and IP3-induced calcium release from IP3-sensitive endoplasmic reticulum; this study sought to evaluate the effects of thimerosal on agonist-stimulated phasic myometrial contractions. Thimerosal was found to significantly inhibit phasic contractions stimulated by oxytocin, aluminum fluoride, potassium chloride, ionomycin, and Bay K 8644. These observations provide support for the hypothesis that calcium uptake and IP3-induced calcium release are important events during agonist-stimulated phasic myometrial contractions.

Familial dysalbuminemic hyperthyroxinemia (FDH) is the most common cause of inherited euthyroid hyperthyroxinemia in Caucasians. Transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait, it is always associated with high serum total T4 (TT4) and more rarely with elevated total T3 (TT3) and/or rT3 (TrT3) concentrations. Free T4, by dialysis, and TSH levels are normal, suggesting the presence of a T4-binding protein abnormality.

MN9D is an immortalized dopamine-containing neuronal hybrid cell line. When MN9D cells were coaggregated with primary embryonic cells of optic tectum, a brain region that does not receive a dopaminergic innervation, there was a marked reduction in their dopamine content, tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity, and tyrosine hydroxylase mRNA. Similar reductions in dopamine content were produced by coaggregation with cells from embryonic thalamus, another brain region devoid of dopaminergic innervation.

Controversy exists regarding which Korotkoff phase should be used to estimate diastolic blood pressure during pregnancy, some authorities recommending phase 5 (disappearance of sounds) and others suggesting phase 4 (muffling). Available data indicate that Korotkoff phase 5 more closely approximates true intraarterial diastolic pressure in pregnant women. Nonetheless, it has been suggested that phase 5 is unmeasurable in a significant number of gravid women, making this end point less desirable.

Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) is a liver glycoprotein that transports thyroid hormone in serum. In 1989, a variant TBG was reported with reduced binding affinity for thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which results in low serum T4 and T3 levels. This variant, TBG-San Diego (TBG-SD), also displays reduced heat stability but has a normal isoelectric focusing pattern.

Using whole cell patch-clamp and perforated patch recording techniques on human cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF airway epithelial cells, we sought to determine whether a single Cl- conductance (GCl) could be modulated via different regulatory pathways or whether multiple conductances could be identified. Cl- current in both CF and non-CF cells was activated by cellular swelling as well as by an elevation in intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i). While the adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP)-activated GCl was absent in CF cells, its activation in non-CF cells was only observed in the perforated patch configuration at lower temperatures (24 degrees C) or infrequently in the whole cell configuration at elevated temperatures (33 degrees C).
