An electrochemical approach toward the synthesis of diaryliodonium salts based on anodic C-I coupling between aryl iodides and arenes is presented. In contrast to previous protocols, our method requires no chemical oxidants, strong acids, or fluorinated solvents. A further advantage is that by use of the appropriate supporting electrolyte, the counterion of choice can be introduced, which is time- and cost-saving as compared to postsynthesis ion exchange.

Bioorthogonal reactions that enable switching molecular functions by breaking chemical bonds have gained prominence, with the tetrazine-mediated cleavage of trans-cyclooctene caged compounds (click-to-release) being particularly noteworthy for its high versatility, biocompatibility, and fast reaction rates. Despite several recent advances, the development of highly reactive tetrazines enabling quantitative elimination from trans-cyclooctene linkers remains challenging. In this study, we present the synthesis and application of sulfo-tetrazines, a class of derivatives featuring phenolic hydroxyl groups with increased acidity constants (pK).

This study points out the importance of the templating effect in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors grown on graphene. By combining two achiral materials, we report the formation of a chiral composite heterostructure with electronic band splitting. The effect is observed through circularly polarized light emission and detection in a graphene/α-CH(NH)PbI perovskite composite, at ambient temperature and without a magnetic field.

Article Synopsis
  • The unique chemical properties of lanthanide compounds, particularly in their less common +2 oxidation state, lead to significant applications, but their molecular characteristics, especially for compounds like europium dihalides, remain underexplored.
  • Highly accurate calculations of the molecular structures, vibrational spectra, and atomisation energies of europium dihalides (EuX) using advanced computational methods reveal that these compounds are non-linear with varying bond angles and notable differences in bond strength compared to their monohalide counterparts.
  • The study evaluates the accuracy of using a pseudopotential approximation for europium's 4f electrons, showing that neglecting these electrons can result in substantial errors in molecular properties, emphasizing the importance of their explicit treatment for precise results

Analysis and detection of homemade explosive TACP.

Forensic Sci Int

November 2024

Canine Behavior Research Center, Department of Animal Science and Ethology, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Prague, Czech Republic.

This paper focuses on tetraamminecopper(II) perchlorate (TACP), a relatively newly used and popular homemade explosive that is insufficiently described in the literature. The compound was analyzed using commonly used forensic laboratory techniques such as FTIR, Raman, XRPD, and DTA. The TACP molecule was labeled with four N atoms on ammonia ligands to assign vibrational modes to the resulting bands.

Bioorthogonal bond-cleavage reactions have emerged as a powerful tool for precise spatiotemporal control of (bio)molecular function in the biological context. Among these chemistries, the tetrazine-triggered elimination of cleavable trans-cyclooctenes (click-to-release) stands out due to high reaction rates, versatility, and selectivity. Despite an increasing understanding of the underlying mechanisms, application of this reaction remains limited by the cumulative performance trade-offs (i.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists looked at how treating sewage sludge (waste from toilets) affects the levels of harmful metals and chemicals in farming soils and crops.
  • They found that using processed sludge helped reduce 'bad' metals in crops, like arsenic and copper, and made sure the crops were safe to eat.
  • The study showed that treating sludge can lower harmful chemicals significantly, but more research is needed to see how it works with different soils and plants.

Determination of olefins in pyrolysis oils from waste plastics and tires is crucial for optimizing the pyrolysis process and especially for the further advanced valorization of these oils in terms of the circular economy. Identifying olefins, even using high-resolution techniques like GC×GC, is challenging without TOF-MS, which allows modification of the ionization step. Currently, the only method for determining olefins in plastic pyrolysis oils is GC-VUV, recently standardized as ASTM D8519.

Bisphenols in daily clothes from conventional and recycled material: evaluation of dermal exposure to potentially toxic substances.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

September 2024

Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology, Department of Food Analysis and Nutrition, University of Chemistry and Technology (UCT), Prague, Technicka 5, 166 28, Prague, Czechia.

Given the increasing concern about chemical exposure from textiles, our study examines the risks of dermal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol F (BPF) from conventional and recycled textiles for adults, aiming to obtain new data, assess exposure, and evaluate the impact of washing on bisphenol levels. A total of 57 textile samples (33 from recycled and 24 from conventional material) were subjected to ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry analysis (UHPLC-MS/MS). The BPA and BPS concentrations varied widely (BPA: < 0.

Distinct advantages of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in molecular detection can benefit the enantioselective discrimination of specific molecular configurations. However, many of the recent methods still lack versatility and require customized anchors to chemically interact with the studied analyte. In this work, we propose the utilization of helicoid-shaped chiral gold nanoparticles arranged in an ordered array on a gold grating surface for enantioselective SERS recognition.

Ion channels represent a druggable family of transmembrane pore-forming proteins with important (patho)physiological functions. While electrophysiological measurement (manual patch clamp) remains the only direct method for detection of ion currents, it is a labor-intensive technique. Although automated patch clamp instruments have become available to date, their high costs limit their use to large pharma companies or commercial screening facilities.

August 2024

Univ. Lille, CNRS, INRAE, Centrale Lille, UMR 8207-UMET-Unité Matériaux et Transformations, F-59000 Lille, France.

The paper aims at documenting the material employed in 1942 for the fabrication of an exhaust valve for a Harley-Davidson WLA/WLC motorcycle and assesses the material features with modern steel standard specifications and treatment. Facing properties of the original historical parts of technical heritage objects according to modern standards is a rare discipline, as these objects are nowadays in collections of museums or private collectors and experimental instrumental analyses are strictly forbidden. In this case, a preserved accessible unused surplus replacement kit was studied.
