An inflammation-resolving polysialic acid-decorated PLGA nanoparticle (PolySia-NP) has been developed to treat geographic atrophy/age-related macular degeneration and other conditions caused by macrophage and complement over-activation. While PolySia-NPs have demonstrated pre-clinical efficacy, this study evaluated its systemic and intraocular safety. PolySia-NPs were evaluated in vitro for mutagenic activity using strains and , with and without metabolic activation; cytotoxicity was evaluated based on its interference with normal mitosis.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, progressive retinal disease characterized by an inflammatory response mediated by activated macrophages and microglia infiltrating the inner layer of the retina. In this study, we demonstrate that inhibition of macrophages through Siglec binding in the AMD eye can generate therapeutically useful effects. We show that Siglecs-7, -9 and -11 are upregulated in AMD associated M0 and M1 macrophages, and that these can be selectively targeted using polysialic acid (PolySia)-nanoparticles (NPs) to control dampen AMD-associated inflammation.

Inhalation and deposition of particles in human airways have attracted considerable attention due to importance of particulate pollutants, transmission of infectious diseases, and therapeutic delivery of drugs at targeted areas. We summarize current state-of-the art research in particle deposition on airway surface liquid (ASL) influenced by mucociliary clearance (MCC) by identifying areas that need further investigation. We aim to review focus on governing and constitutive equations describing MCC geometry followed by description of mathematical modeling of ciliary forces, mucus rheology properties, and numerical approaches to solve modified time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations.

Lifestyle medicine (LM) offers future generations of clinicians practical tools to effectively prevent, manage and reverse chronic disease. Due to a variety of factors, introduction of such curricula in medical training has been slow. Until LM becomes more standard in medical schools, electives and tracks are an innovative way to introduce curricula in a time-efficient manner so students can have access to this valuable information during their formative training years.

The prevalence of obesity has reached pandemic proportions worldwide and certainly in the United States. Obesity is a well-established independent risk factor for development of many cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including heart failure, coronary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and hypertension. Therefore, it is logical to expect obesity would have a strong correlation with CVD mortality.

Hypothesis: AR42, a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, reduces viability of primary vestibular schwannoma (VS) cells and delays tumor progression and hearing loss (HL) in a xenograft model of VS.
Background: The impact of HDAC expression on AR42 response in primary VS cells is unknown, as well as the effects of AR42 on VS-associated HL and imbalance.
Methods: Primary human VS cells (n = 7) were treated with AR42 (0-3.
Burn scar contracture greatly limits function for burn survivors, particularly when the scarring crosses multiple joints. Previous research has identified fields of skin recruited during single joint motion, called cutaneous functional units (CFU), indicating that impairments may be seen distal to the injured tissue. This case report connects the principles of CFU and yoga-inspired therapy modalities in improving clinical outcomes for a burn survivor.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be the most common cause of death worldwide, and cardiac arrhythmias account for approximately one half of these deaths. The morbidity and mortality from CVD have been reduced significantly over the past few decades; however, disparities in racial or ethnic populations still exist. This review is based on available literature to date and focuses on known cardiac channelopathies and other inherited disorders associated with sudden cardiac death in African American/Black subjects and the role of epigenetics in phenotypic manifestations of CVD, and illustrates existing disparities in treatment and outcomes.

As COVID-19 continues to cause an increasing number of deaths worldwide, it is important that providers stay abreast with new research related to the pathophysiology of COVID-19 disease presentation states and clinical management. It is now well recognized that COVID-19 affects extrapulmonary organs, particularly the cardiovascular system. For example, cardiogenic shock has been increasingly observed in patients with COVID-19, owing to the various mechanisms involved and the affinity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to cells comprising the cardiovascular system.

Background: This study aimed to present the surgical facilitation of neurovascular bundle (NVB) sparing using the toggling technique (30° lens down/up switching) and to evaluate erectile dysfunction (ED) recovery after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).
Methods: We assessed 144 patients (group with toggling, n = 72; group without toggling, n = 72) who underwent RARP with bilateral NVB sparing using propensity score matching. Inclusion criteria were ≥ 1 year follow-up and preoperative potency as per the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) questionnaire (≥ 17 points).

Objective: To evaluate clinical characteristics of patients admitted to the hospital with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Southern United States and development as well as validation of a mortality risk prediction model.
Patients And Methods: Southern Louisiana was an early hotspot during the pandemic, which provided a large collection of clinical data on inpatients with COVID-19. We designed a risk stratification model to assess the mortality risk for patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19.

Cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) significantly improves outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially coronary heart disease and heart failure (HF). Although CR is often considered as an exercise training (ET) program for patients following CVD events, CR is more than just ET as it involves education, dietary and psychological counseling, as well as a multi-factorial risk factor modification. However, a major component of ET involves efforts to measure and improve levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF).

The World Health Organization has declared obesity to be a global epidemic that increases cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis. The increasing ratio of time spent in sedentary activities to that spent performing physically demanding tasks increases the trends to obesity and susceptibility to these risk factors. Dyslipidemia is the foundation of atherosclerotic buildup and lipoproteins serve as cofactors to the inflammatory processes that destabilize plaques.

Studies demonstrate that novice clinicians struggle to develop and apply strong illness scripts. We developed the Integrated Illness Script and Mechanism of Disease (IIS-MOD) map framework to address this challenge.

The pathophysiology of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) involves multi-organ dysfunction, particularly involving the respiratory, cardiovascular and hematological systems. This dysfunction is partly due to systemic inflammation causing a wide array of pathological sequelae thus posing a significant challenge to management despite the advances in treatment made thus far. In this report, we present a COVID-19 patient who developed a transient complete heart block and was temporarily paced as a complication of a saddle pulmonary embolus (PE).

Purpose Of Review: In this article, we review the most current evidence for initiation and maintenance of various antihypertension (HTN) drug classes, including other misconceptions with respect to common comorbidities in patients with HTN.
Recent Findings: Although the currently available anti-HTN agents have broad applicability in treating HTN, additional agents, such as angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors and novel nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid antagonists, have recently gained clinical significance. In addition, there have been some anecdotal concerns regarding the adverse effects, indications, and risks of COVID-19 infection/mortality when using certain anti-HTN agents.

Description These images feature the Lower Antelope Canyon which was originally called Hasdestwazi, a Navajo word that means "spiral rock arches." After hundreds of years, monsoons, winds, and flash floods eroded the slot canyon into the geological wonder that it is today. It enchants tourists and engulfs visitors as it flows around them in every direction.
