Turkey litter waste is lignocellulosic and keratinous, requiring prior enzymatic treatment to facilitate fiber hydrolysis and utilization by microorganisms in anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The understanding of the performance of microorganisms in AD can be facilitated through molecular biology and bioinformatics tools. This study aimed to determine the taxonomic profile and functional prediction of microbial communities in the AD of turkey litter waste subjected to enzymatic pretreatment and correlate it with operational parameters.

Background: The use of panoramic radiography (PR) is a complementary examination to aid in the diagnosis of cases in paediatric dentistry. The lack of specific protocols for these devices, however, can result in high doses of radiation, affecting critical organs such as the thyroid.

Aim: To evaluate the discrepancies in ionizing radiation received by the thyroid during PR examinations using anthropomorphic paediatric simulators built from computed tomography images.

Highways, the lifeline of the Brazilian economy, transport approximately 75% of the country's economic activity, highlighting its importance. However, professional drivers, accustomed to long daily journeys, make use of tablets widely available in Gas Station, which are known as "Rebites," which could contain a mixture of legal and illegal compounds. Thus, this study aims at the chemical characterization of these through different analytical methods.

Akinetopsia is a rare neurological syndrome characterized by an impaired perception of movement, often resulting from brain damage due to ischemia, epilepsy, or medication. It is also known as visual motion blindness, and patients with this condition are unable to perceive motion normally even with perfect visual acuity. This report aims to present a case of a patient in their late 40 s who developed akinetopsia and also an impairment in movement perception of objects without emitting sounds, after experiencing a late relapse of breast cancer with the occurrence of multiple brain metastases.

subspecies serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum ( Pullorum) is a pathogenic bacterium that causes Pullorum disease (PD). PD is an acute systemic disease that affects young chickens, causing white diarrhea and high mortality. Although many sanitary programs have been carried out to eradicate Pullorum, PD outbreaks have been reported in different types of birds (layers, broilers, breeders) worldwide.

Effect of Graphene Oxide Surface Deposition Process on Synthetic Macrofibers and Its Results on the Microstructure of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete.

Polymers (Basel)

April 2024

Postgraduate Program in Engineering of Processes and Technologies (PGEPROTEC), University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), Caxias do Sul 95070-560, Brazil.

The improvement of the mechanical properties of concrete can be achieved with the use of synthetic macrofibers. However, this fiber-matrix interaction will be sufficiently efficient for tensile efforts only when there is a binding agent that associates the characteristics of the paste with the characteristics of the surface of the reinforcing material. As already identified, in a first phase of this research using synthetic microfibers, a better fiber-matrix interaction can be achieved with the surface treatment of synthetic fibers with graphene oxide.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

March 2024

Postgraduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering, University of Caxias do Sul, Caxias do Sul 95070-560, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • Copper has effective antibacterial properties that can be enhanced with light, making it a viable option for disinfecting surfaces.
  • The study explored both microsized (CuMPs) and nanosized (CuNPs) copper particles, revealing that CuNPs were generally more effective but CuMPs still showed significant biocidal activity, especially under illumination.
  • The findings suggest that CuMPs can serve as a cost-effective alternative for self-cleaning materials in disinfection processes, competing well with smaller nanoparticles.

In this study, IBCB 66, IBCB 868, and CBMAI 1306 isolates of Beauveria bassiana were grown in liquid culture for 4 days, leading to elevated submerged spores (SS) levels. The influence of the addition of different glycerol concentrations (0, 3, and 6%) (v/v) in the liquid culture was investigated regarding the stability (at 4 and 27 °C) of dried formulations. The virulence of SS was compared with aerial spores (AS) against Tetranychus urticae (Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae).
