Salivary gland carcinomas (SGC) are rare tumors of heterogeneous morphology and many histological subtypes. Like other tumors, the SGC mass consists of a varied population of malignant cells and a diverse array of immune cells, cancer-associated fibroblasts, cytokines, chemokines, extracellular matrix proteins, and metalloproteinases, collectively known as the tumor microenvironment (TME). This chaotic network serves as an important physical mediator of cancer cell growth.

Article Synopsis
  • Salivary gland carcinomas (SGC) are aggressive cancers originating in salivary glands, presenting challenges in diagnosis and treatment due to their complexity and various subtypes.
  • Recent research has shifted focus to the tumor microenvironment, especially immune and stromal cells, as a potential target for therapy, despite limited success with immunotherapy in SGC patients.
  • The review discusses various experimental models of SGC, emphasizing the tumor microenvironment and exploring potential therapeutic applications for each model to enhance treatment responses in advanced stages of the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) is a rare form of squamous cell carcinoma that features both carcinomatous and sarcomatous traits, making diagnosis challenging.
  • A case study highlighted a 50-year-old woman previously treated for melanoma, who presented with a painful lip lesion diagnosed as SpCC after surgical analysis showed specific immunohistochemical markers.
  • The patient experienced metastases within a year, leading to her death after three years, emphasizing the need for detailed microscopic and immunohistochemical evaluations for accurate diagnosis.

Background: The changes in dental care in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the need for greater financial investment by dentists in biosafety measures and increase in the costs of dental consultations.

Objective: To evaluate the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental practices in private clinics in Brazil.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out, using an online questionnaire indexed in Google Forms, and distributed among dentists.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is the most common form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis and oral mucosal involvement is exceedingly rare. Histiocytic disorders harbor activating mutations in MAPK pathway, including the report of BRAF V600E in JXG of extracutaneous site. However, no information is available for oral JXG.

Introduction: More data are needed before affirming that single-visit approaches are effective and safe for regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs). This study compared clinical and radiographic outcomes of REPs between interappointment dressing or single-visit protocols.

Methods: Twenty young patients presenting traumatized immature teeth with pulp necrosis were divided into 2 groups.

The identification of genetic risk factors for non-syndromic oral clefts is of great importance for better understanding the biological processes related to this heterogeneous and complex group of diseases. Herein we applied whole-exome sequencing to identify potential variants related to non-syndromic cleft palate only (NSCPO) in the multiethnic Brazilian population. Thirty NSCPO samples and 30 sex- and genetic ancestry-matched healthy controls were pooled (3 pools with 10 samples for each group) and subjected to whole-exome sequencing.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of BPIFA proteins in the saliva and salivary glands of hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) patients.

Material And Methods: This longitudinal study included patients who had undergone autologous HCT (auto-HCT) and allogeneic HCT (allo-HCT), and unstimulated saliva was collected at three time points, with a fourth collection at oral chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) onset. BPIFA expression was analysed by Western blotting in saliva and immunostaining in the minor salivary glands of cGVHD patients.

Statement Of Problem: Although luting space is related to the marginal fit of indirect restorations, information on its influence on the marginal fit and tensile strength of zirconia abutments bonded to titanium bases is lacking.

Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of luting space on the marginal discrepancy and tensile strength of zirconia abutments bonded to a titanium base after dynamic loading.

Material And Methods: Ninety implant replicas were embedded in resin blocks to attach 4-mm-high titanium luting bases.

Introduction: Placental villitis is characterized by the presence of inflammatory infiltrate in the placental villous. The objective of this study was to characterize in villitis of unknown etiology (VUE) of the human placentas the subpopulation of M1, important effector cells, and M2 macrophages, immunoregulatory cells.

Methods: Sixteen cases of VUE and three control placentas were examined using immunohistochemistry with antibodies for CD3, CD68, CD11c, and CD163.

January 2021

Laboratory of Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Oral Diagnosis, Dental School of Piracicaba, State University of Campinas (FOP/UNICAMP), Piracicaba, São Paulo 13414-903, Brazil (Boriollo, M. Oliveira, Santos); Center for Research and Postgraduate Studies in Animal Science, Pathology and Animal Pharmacology Area, Universidade José do Rosário Vellano, Alfenas, Minas Gerais 37132-440, Brazil (Boriollo, Moreira, Rufino, N. Oliveira).

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of Shiga toxin -producing (STEC) in diarrheic newborn calves, as well as the resistance profile of this microorganism against antimicrobials routinely used in veterinary therapy. The antimicrobial profile of against clinical isolates was also analyzed. Specimens from the recto-anal junction mucosa were investigated by using chromogenic medium and identification of was done using microbiological methods (Gram staining, indole test, methyl red test, Voges-Proskauer test, citrate test, urease test, and hydrogen sulfide test).

Statement Of Problem: Misfits at the implant-abutment joint (IAJ) can cause the biological and mechanical failure of implant therapy. Standard parallel periapical radiography (PERI) is the method of choice for assessing the fitting of implant-supported prostheses. Although current guidelines do not support the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) solely for misfit detection, CBCT scans can also register misfits as imaging findings.
