This review aims to provide an overview of sustainable approaches that can be incorporated into well-known procedures for the development of materials, pre- and post-treatments, modifications, and applications of 3D-printed objects, especially for fused filament fabrication (FFF). Different examples of conductive and non-conductive bespoke filaments using renewable biopolymers, bioplasticizers, and recycled materials are presented and discussed. The main final characteristics of the polymeric materials achieved according to the feedstock, preparation, extrusion, and treatments are also covered.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) patients are at higher risk of developing silent cerebral infarcts and overt stroke, which may reflect cognitive impairment, functional limitations, and worse quality of life. The cognitive function of Brazilian adult SCD patients ( = 124; 19-70 years; 56 men; 79 SS, 28 SC, 10 S/β, 7 S/β) was screened through Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and correlated the results with possible predictive factors for test performance, including sociocultural, clinical, laboratory data and brain imaging. The Median MoCA score was 23 (8-30); 70% had a 25-or-less score, suggesting some level of cognitive impairment.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus has highlighted the need for serological assays that can accurately evaluate the neutralizing efficiency of antibodies produced during infection or induced by vaccines. However, conventional assays often require the manipulation of live viruses on a level-three biosafety (BSL3) facility, which presents practical and safety challenges. We introduce a novel technique for designing color filter metasurfaces using a data-driven approach based on deep learning. Our innovative approach employs inverse design principles to identify highly efficient designs that outperform all the configurations in the dataset, which consists of 585 distinct geometries solely. By combining Multi-Valued Artificial Neural Networks and back-propagation optimization, we overcome the limitations of previous approaches, such as poor performance due to extrapolation and undesired local minima.

This study aimed at producing pectin hydrogel beads by ionic gelation proce to carry pomegranate extract (PE) evaluating approaches to increase its retention and protect the polyphenols from environmental conditions that interfere in the stability and color of these compounds, such as the pH of the medium. Several strategies were tested to reduce the mass transfer and consequently increase its retention. The insertion of a filler (gelatinized starch), the employment of different concentrations from the external environment, the adsorption using blank pectin-starch beads, and the electrostatic coating using chitosan were performed.

Theoretical and micromagnetic simulation studies of magnetic nanospheres with vortex configurations suggest that such nanostructured materials have technological advantages over conventional nanosystems for applications based on high-power-rate absorption and subsequent emission. However, full experimental evidence of magnetic vortex configurations in spheres of submicrometer size is still lacking. Here, we report the microwave irradiation fabrication of FeO nanospheres and establish their magnetic vortex configuration based on experimental results, theoretical analysis, and micromagnetic simulations.

This study aimed to verify the in vitro antifungal activity of Tahiti lemon essential oil (LEO) and its fractions, obtained by supercritical CO fractionation, against Penicillium sumatrense and Aspergillus niger isolated from pan bread. For this, LEO was solubilized (20 MPa and 40 °C) and fractionated (10 MPa and 40 °C) in supercritical CO, resulting in soluble (SF) and precipitated (PF) fractions. LEO, SF and PF volatile compounds were identified by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and semiquantified by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID).
