Introduction: Crohn's disease (CD) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with a relapsing-remitting course. Amino acids (AAs) may play critical roles in the intestinal manifestations of disease, due to their involvement in many metabolic and immune functions. The present study aimed to explore serum AA concentrations in adult patients with CD, looking into their variations due to disease activity, surgery and protein content of diet.

Respiratory Function Changes as Early Signs of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Background: The current diagnostic criteria for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may remain unsatisfactory for months or years in the early disease. Pulmonary assessment has never been considered useful in the early diagnosis of ALS, and studies of pulmonary function in this patient category are lacking.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the pulmonary function in subjects with unspecific symptoms of ALS in whom an ALS diagnosis cannot be reached based on the current available guidelines.

Engineered heart tissue maturation inhibits cardiomyocyte proliferative response to cryoinjury.

The cellular and molecular mechanisms that are responsible for the poor regenerative capacity of the adult heart after myocardial infarction (MI) are still unclear and their understanding is crucial to develop novel regenerative therapies. Considering the lack of reliable in vitro tissue-like models to evaluate the molecular mechanisms of cardiac regeneration, we used cryoinjury on rat Engineered Heart Tissues (rEHTs) as a new model which recapitulates in part the in vivo response after myocardial injury of neonatal and adult heart. When we subjected to cryoinjury immature and mature rEHTs, we observed a significant increase in cardiomyocyte (CM) DNA synthesis when compared to the controls.

Exosomes: Emerging Modulators of Pancreatic Cancer Drug Resistance.

Pancreatic cancer (PaC) is one of the most lethal tumors worldwide, difficult to diagnose, and with inadequate therapeutical chances. The most used therapy is gemcitabine, alone or in combination with nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel), and the multidrug FOLFIRINOX. Unfortunately, PaC develops resistance early, thus reducing the already poor life expectancy of patients.

Parathyroid Retrospective Analysis of Neoplasms Incidence (pTRANI Study): An Italian Multicenter Study on Parathyroid Carcinoma and Atypical Parathyroid Tumour.

Background: Parathyroid cancer (PC) is a rare sporadic or hereditary malignancy whose histologic features were redefined with the 2022 WHO classification. A total of 24 Italian institutions designed this multicenter study to specify PC incidence, describe its clinical, functional, and imaging characteristics and improve its differentiation from the atypical parathyroid tumour (APT).

Methods: All relevant information was collected about PC and APT patients treated between 2009 and 2021.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a recurrent complication of sepsis. Since DIC not only promotes organ dysfunction but also represents a strong prognostic factor, it is important to diagnose DIC as early as possible. When coagulation is activated, fibrinolysis is inhibited, blood thinners are consumed, and a condition is created that promotes blood clotting, making it more difficult for the body to remove fibrin or prevent it from being deposited in the blood vessels.

The Italian Unitary Society of Colon-proctology (SIUCP: Società Italiana Unitaria di Colonproctologia) guidelines for the management of anal fissure.

Introduction: The aim of these evidence-based guidelines is to present a consensus position from members of the Italian Unitary Society of Colon-Proctology (SIUCP: Società Italiana Unitaria di Colon-Proctologia) on the diagnosis and management of anal fissure, with the purpose to guide every physician in the choice of the best treatment option, according with the available literature.

Methods: A panel of experts was designed and charged by the Board of the SIUCP to develop key-questions on the main topics covering the management of anal fissure and to performe an accurate search on each topic in different databanks, in order to provide evidence-based answers to the questions and to summarize them in statements. All the clinical questions were discussed by the expert panel in different rounds through the Delphi approach and, for each statement, a consensus among the experts was reached.

Optimization of the immunorecognition layer towards Brucella sp. on gold surface for SPR platform.

A successful immunosensor is characterized by a proper antibody immobilization and orientation in order to enhance the antigen recognition. In this work, a thorough characterization of the antibody functionalized gold surface is performed to set up the best conditions to implement in an optical platform for the detection of Brucella sp. Two different strategies are evaluated, based on a random immobilization and on an oriented one: a direct antibody immobilization on carboxylic mixed polyethylene (PEG) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) or only carboxylic PEG SAM interface is compared to an oriented immobilization on a layer of protein G on the same PEG SAM interfaces.

Scopolamine-Induced Memory Impairment in Mice: Effects of PEA-OXA on Memory Retrieval and Hippocampal LTP.

Among animal models for amnesia and testing new drugs, the scopolamine test is the most widely used for transient global amnesia (TGA). This study examined the scopolamine-induced deficits in working memory, discriminative memory, anxiety, and motor activity in the presence of intranasal PEA-OXA, a dual antagonist of presynaptic α2 and H3 receptors.

A Dynamic Probabilistic Model for Heterogeneous Data Fusion: A Pilot Case Study from Computer-Aided Detection of Depression.

The present paper, in the framework of a search for a computer-aided method to detect depression, deals with experimental data of various types, with their correlation, and with the way relevant information about depression delivered by different sets of data can be fused to build a unique body of knowledge about individuals' mental states facilitating the diagnosis and its accuracy. To this aim, it suggests the use of a recently introduced «limiting form» of the kinetic-theoretic language, at present widely used to describe complex systems of objects of the most diverse nature. In this connection, the paper mainly aims to show how a wide range of experimental procedures can be described as examples of this «limiting case» and possibly rendered by this description more effective as methods of prediction from experience.

Background: Several studies described the cross-sectional characteristics of systemic sclerosis patients and coexisting primary biliary cholangitis, but longitudinal prognostic data are lacking.

Aims: To describe the systemic sclerosis-primary biliary cholangitis phenotype, including baseline characteristics and outcomes.

Methods: We performed a multicentre the European Scleroderma Trials and Research Group study of systemic sclerosis patients with primary biliary cholangitis or with primary biliary cholangitis-specific antibodies, matched with systemic sclerosis controls free from hepatobiliary involvement matched for disease duration and cutaneous subset.

Introduction: The advent of image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) has recently changed the workflow of radiation treatments by ensuring highly collimated treatments. Artificial intelligence (AI) and radiomics are tools that have shown promising results for diagnosis, treatment optimization and outcome prediction. This review aims to assess the impact of AI and radiomics on modern IGRT modalities in RT.

Ventilatory efficiency in post-COVID-19 athletes.

Limitation in exercise capacity has not been described in athletes affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, patients who have recovered from COVID-19 without cardiopulmonary impairment show exaggerated ventilatory response during exercise. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the ventilatory efficiency (VEf) in competitive athletes recovered from COVID-19 and to characterize the ventilation versus carbon dioxide relationship (VE/VCO ) slope in this population.

β-AR inhibition enhances EGFR antibody efficacy hampering the oxidative stress response machinery.

The β2-Adrenergic receptor (β2-ARs) is a cell membrane-spanning G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) physiologically involved in stress-related response. In many cancers, the β2-ARs signaling drives the tumor development and transformation, also promoting the resistance to the treatments. In HNSCC cell lines, the β2-AR selective inhibition synergistically amplifies the cytotoxic effect of the MEK 1/2 by affecting the p38/NF-kB oncogenic pathway and contemporary reducing the NRF-2 mediated antioxidant cell response.

Pelvic ring fractures with concomitant large hematomas: diagnostic investigation with arteriography and eventual embolization in 157 trauma patients, with or without contrast extravasation at emergency CT.

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of pelvic arteriography in patients with pelvic ring fractures and associated large hematomas, in both cases of positive or negative findings of contrast agent extravasation at emergency CT; in those patients with positive DSA subsequently treated with embolization, correlations with clinical-radiological parameters were investigated.

Materials And Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, patients with acute blunt pelvic trauma showing at CT pelvic ring fractures with associated large (> 3 cm) hematoma, with or without signs of arterial bleeding, were investigated with DSA. Technical success was considered radiographic bleeding control with disappearance of angiographic bleeding; clinical success was defined as clinical bleeding control hemodynamically stable, before applying other surgical maneuvers.

The lived experience of depression: a bottom-up review co-written by experts by experience and academics.

We provide here the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of depression, co-written by experts by experience and academics. First-person accounts within and outside the medical field were screened and discussed in collaborative workshops involving numerous individuals with lived experience of depression, family members and carers, representing a global network of organizations. The material was enriched by phenomenologically informed perspectives and shared with all collaborators in a cloud-based system.
