MICP mediated by indigenous bacteria isolated from tailings for biocementation for reduction of wind erosion.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

June 2024

Laboratorio de Biotecnología Ambiental Aplicada BIOAL, Departamento de Biotecnología, Facultad de Ciencias del Mar y Recursos Biológicos, Universidad de Antofagasta, Antofagasta, Chile.

In this study, native ureolytic bacteria were isolated from copper tailings soils to perform microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) tests and evaluate their potential for biocement formation and their contribution to reduce the dispersion of particulate matter into the environment from tailings containing potentially toxic elements. It was possible to isolate a total of 46 bacteria; among them only three showed ureolytic activity: T130-1, sp. T130-13 and sp.

Positive symptoms of schizophrenia have been proposed to be an intrusion of dreaming in wakefulness; conversely, psychotic patients' abnormal cognitive and behavioral features could overflow into sleep, so that their dreams would differ from those of healthy people. Here we assess this hypothesis by comparing dream features of 46 patients affected by schizophrenic spectrum disorders to those of 28 healthy controls. In patients, we also investigated correlations of dream variables with symptom severity and verbal fluency.

Exploring the Link between , Gastric Microbiota and Gastric Cancer.

Antibiotics (Basel)

May 2024

Gastroenterology Unit, Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, University Federico II of Naples, 80131 Naples, Italy.

Gastric cancer (GC) still represents one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality and is a major public health issue worldwide. Understanding the etiopathogenetic mechanisms behind GC development holds immense potential to revolutionize patients' treatment and prognosis. Within the complex web of genetic predispositions and environmental factors, the connection between () and gastric microbiota emerges as a focus of intense research investigation.

Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) first-line therapy often consists of polychemotherapy regimens, but choosing a second-line therapy after disease progression, especially following first-line FOLFIRINOX, remains a clinical challenge. This study presents results from a large, multicenter, retrospective analysis of Italian patients with metastatic PC (mPC) treated with Nab-paclitaxel/Gemcitabine (AG) as second or later line of treatment. Main objective of the study is to identify prognostic factors that could inform treatment decisions.

The effects of important nutrients such as calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) have been investigated in relation to male fertility due to their roles in proper spermatogenesis, sperm maturation, motility, and optimal sperm function. An imbalance between these elements has been associated with several pathologic conditions and male reproductive issues. The purpose of this study was to determine the essential trace and electrolytes elements, such as Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Se, and Zn, in human biological samples (blood, serum, and semen) from patients with male infertility.

Lung transplantation: Current insights and outcomes.

Transpl Immunol

August 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Medical University of Vienna, Waehringer Guertel 18-20, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

Until now, the ability to predict or retard immune-mediated rejection events after lung transplantation is still limited due to the lack of specific biomarkers. The pressing need remains to early diagnose or predict the onset of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and its differential phenotypes that is the leading cause of death. Omics technologies (mainly genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics) combined with advanced bioinformatic platforms are clarifying the key immune-related molecular routes that trigger early and late events of lung allograft rejection supporting the biomarker discovery.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates whether illegal toxic waste discharge can cause a new reproductive condition called morpho-epigenetic pathozoospermia in young men who typically have normal sperm quality.
  • - Findings reveal that exposure to environmental contaminants can lead to serious sperm defects and an increase in low-quality circular RNA in the seminal plasma of men living in heavily polluted areas.
  • - The research involved semen samples from 160 healthy men, split between those from a contaminated region in Italy ('Land of Fires') and a control group, highlighting significant differences in sperm quality attributed to environmental pollution.

Article Synopsis
  • Cemiplimab, a treatment approved for advanced skin cancer, lacks clear guidelines on which patients will benefit most, prompting this study to examine real-world outcomes in treated patients.
  • A total of 45 patients were analyzed, showing significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) correlated with those who had previously undergone radiotherapy.
  • Despite the promising results, the study has limitations such as its small sample size and retrospective design, indicating a need for further investigation into combining cemiplimab with radiotherapy.

Kidney transplantation in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis is associated with a high incidence of post-transplant cancer.

J Nephrol

July 2024

Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Renal Transplantation, Fondazione IRCCS Cà Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

Background: Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a rare disease with limited data on outcomes after transplantation.

Methods: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, we describe the outcomes of kidney transplant patients with AAV transplanted at our institute from February 2006 to January 2022.

Results: We identified 9 patients among 1026 with a pre-transplant diagnosis of AAV; all patients had received previous treatment with cyclophosphamide.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous syndrome, associated with different levels of severity and impairment on the personal functioning for each patient. Classification systems in psychiatry, including ICD-11 and DSM-5, are used by clinicians in order to simplify the complexity of clinical manifestations. In particular, the DSM-5 introduced specifiers, subtypes, severity ratings, and cross-cutting symptom assessments allowing clinicians to better describe the specific clinical features of each patient.

Brain perfusion changes in beta-thalassemia.

Orphanet J Rare Dis

May 2024

Dipartimento della Donna, del Bambino e di Chirurgia generale e specialistica, Universit? degli Studi della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", Via Luigi de Crecchio 4, Napoli, 80138, Italy.

Background: Brain injury in hereditary hemoglobinopathies is commonly attributed to anemia-related relative hypoperfusion in terms of impaired oxygen blood supply. Supratentorial and infratentorial vascular watershed regions seem to be especially vulnerable, but data are very scarce.

Aims: We investigated a large beta-thalassemia sample with arterial spin labeling in order to characterize regional perfusion changes and their correlation with phenotype and anemia severity.
